Secondly, it was Paul Williams, not William Finley, who wrote this song in real life. And Paul is still very much alive.

It was on replay with our cable channel's theater club, so i watched it a ton of times with i was maybe 12. Loved it, but never saw it again until the very late 80's when a friend had it on VHS, it was one of his favorite films, too. Was so fun to watch it again as an adult.

Lots of backstory about Winston's Maine background, time in prison and how Swan re-wrote his history to fit what Swan wanted people to believe, that Winston was a poor ,innocent genius that flared brightly and was snuffed out,sort of like Mozart .
Amazon has it sometimes for $30+, but it keeps going out of stock at Thrift books. I have the original scripts, though. Bought them at Script City in the 1990s. They put them all together to make one big book. The song, The Hell of It, was supposed to be played at Beef's funeral, with Swan sitting in the car, recording everything. A little girl was supposed to come out and tap dance on Beef's coffin. This was according to the featurette on the blu-ray, but they either ran out of money, or something else happened.
I saw the movie in Warrensburg, Missouri at the drive in - 1977 while I was in the Strategic Air Command . I went to the record store the next day and ordered the LP, a friend of mine ordered the 8 track . I don't know if Big Mark Davis still has the 8 track,but I still have the LP .The back cover has all the lyrics signed by Swan .

i'm confused what you mean or what your trying to get at with the comment... Phantom of the paradise was a pretty weird movie but not made for phantom fans.. weird in a good way. it's more like it was the precursor to the rocky horror show with the music, color, casting and costumes as well as satire.

Rocky Horror was originally a stage musical and opened in Mid 1973. It toured the UK and was on Broadway before the movie was made in '75. Phantom was released the end 1974.
I saw it five times and had to look for the theaters where it was going to be exhibited. Later I recorded when it was aired on HBO. My wife recorded over this movie because "it looked old". I picked up the paperback book of :Phantom of The Paradise" at a tag sale for a quarter. It told a lot of the backstory that filled out the story .
