Found a used one that was in perfect condition and also the lightest one I have ever played and I couldn't resist. It took me 2 1/2 years of trying many different examples but I finally completed the set with the best sounding ones I could find. The 60's P with TI flats is my current gigging #1. I could never warm to the AV series with the 7 1/2" radius. Now with all the rumours of the demise of the AO series and possible resurrection of the AV, these are keepers for me.
Need the PBass now! - 70’s for me - love the snap and pop - would be interesting as well to hear in some kind of mix .. tend to find a big difference once I get it next to another instrument or drums. Thanks! Great demo

For me the overall feel and attention to detail of the U-shaped neck along with the weight of the instrument, irregardless of the tone, sealed the deal. If you find an instrument that feels right you could always work on the tone via your choice of pickups, preamps, strings, and of course technique.
The American Original ‘70’s with the maple neck barks great. It’s tone has bite. The American Original ‘60’s with the rosewood fretboard has a great overall tone. Not as aggressive in tone as the ‘70’s but it has some bite. This one is my favorite. The American Pro II with the rosewood fretboard is good too. Not as rich in tone as the Original ’60, but not far off. The American Pro II with the maple neck has a smoother tone than the other basses, which is not bad. IMO, the other three basses sounded better to my ears. Thanks for taking time to produce this video.
This was interesting. I liked the 60’s sound more. More warm. The 70’s bass seemed to have more attack but on the raw side to me. The Professional series seemed more controlled and refined. Would be great to do the same thing with P-basses

Each of these basses are wonderful in their own right. Really can’t go wrong with any of them. 3) I’m drawn to the authoritative character of the p-bass. Therefore, that AO 70’s you demoed sounds like a dream to my ears. But, IMO, there’s something about that Am Pro 2 that seems like a more practical instrument for the gigging musician. Of those two, I really liked how well balanced the black one sounds.

70's original for me, that ax really sings. I thought I'd prefer the '60's for the pick position(s) & Rosewood board or ther AM Pro II with the Rosewood neck , both are are extremely close 2nd & 3rd. Any one of them would get the job done. Just goes to show you, you don't know until you hear them. Anthony, I think you'd pick the '60's Original, that neck p'up seems closest to a P-Bass, your favorites. But man, talk about Sophie's' Choice! Thanks for an excellent video, would love to see the same for the P-basses, especially since you recently delivered a P-Bass 75 Anniversary Commemorative to me, and it is outstanding.

Seems like the American Original have a slightly different body shape also. The original body shape(pre-Fullerton). Very good basses. I own a AO70's J. Been my main bass until I got my favorite, the Fender Marcus Miller V.
Hi Anthony. All the Am PRO sound like they were already re-EQ'd and slightly compressed by a sound engineer. I'd be curious to listen the same A/B test but in the mix, we all know how hard is to cut the mix through distorted guitars, cymbals, and heavy left hand of keyboardists.
Awesome video! I think a cool idea would be to do similar comparison videos for the various price tiers so people can decide what makes sense for them. You could do Am Pro/Am Original vs. Custom Shop, or Player vs. Vintera

I like Pro II more. Pretty good sounding guitar. I have a Precision version in Dark Night colour, I replaced only neck with rosewood fretboard to maple. My number 1 bass! But i also thinking to add a V-mod II J pickup (convert it into PJ) - is it worth? Or may be should I take my attention into Ultra Series? How to compare Pro II with Ultra?
Wanted to like the VMod II pickups, bought a pulled set, but can't. Too restrained, *just* too wooly on the low end with tone wide open. Jazz needs bell tones to be a Jazz, seems like Fender took all the bells out. Oh well!
I’ve recently bought a Fender Am pro ii jb. But I can’t get such a growling sound. I like this type of tone which resembles a bit of fret buzz. How can I get that sound out of my pro ii?

The AM originals seem to have a fuller range with some more top end also, has a vintage sound which I love . Hard to say . Great comparison and excellent playing

Keep in mind the APii has sixties pickup spacing. Both basses sound different cuz we’re comparing a seventies J against a sixties.
