  • In this episode, we sail on our Leopard 45 west along Crete from Sitia to Spinalonga Island and as there is no space in the Agios Nicolas marina or port to shelter from the next storm in 3 days.
    We enjoy a lovely 15 knot wind to sail Agios Nikolas and then to Spinalonga Island that used to be a Leprosy island! Having worked in the leprosy hospital of Anandaban in Nepal 40 years ago, we share insights and gruesome facts about the life for the exiles in leprosy quarantines in the bad old days.... Also you will see some GRAPHIC medical images of real leprosy patients - so BE WARNED!
    We also take you though the modern day leprosy hospital Anandaban, showing that leprosy is NOT DEAD and is still a problem as it has not yet been eliminated , even though it can be cured with antibiotics.... PEOPLE ARE STILL CONTRACTING LEPROSY TODAY!!!
    We share the facts of the disease and help is need to fight this disease to eliminate it from the planet!!!! Support The Leprosy Mission with donations to :- Leprosymission.org
    We also share an exciting opportunity to join a Leopard 45 trip from Tahiti to Thailand of 7000nm starting in Dec 2024 with Paul Badenhorst - the same captain that led the 8000nm sail that I was on from South Africa to USA! Put your comments below for more info....

    Leprosy is a sad and tragic part of human history and I for one did not know it wasn't highly contagious, a fact that probably was the main cause for sufferers to be isolated from the world for thousands of years. So tragic but thank you for bringing those facts to us.

      Yes the biblical stories have a lot of misinformation to answer for!!! Mind you, when there was no cure, the only protection was to isolate the infected so it was logical with the info they had at that time.

    Spectacular safe mooring..😎
    The Wynns in the Phillipines recently visited a former leper colony ..
    John Ellie a question about the pathogen .. I know that some armadilos are also suseptable but i only recently found out that like Beubonic plague its endemic in some places in the US in the case of this condition it seems it reoccurs in Florida. Are there any particular reasons why.
    Many years ago after reading JRRTs works i settled on another monster work of fantasy writing.. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the unbeliever...and The Ilearth war.
    An unusual fantasy tale in that the namesake, and reluctant hero is a modern day leper .... early in the story he introduces the reader to his constant need to carry out Visual Extremity Checks because of his lack of peripheral nerve feeling and the risk it brings of gangerous infections if he damages or burns himself and fails to clean and treat any wounds...
    It turned into a trillogy of Trillogies ... so i cannot remember if i finished the whole series.. 😉🧙🏻‍♂️🇬🇧

      Hi Clive, ironically we actually chatted the Wynns while we were at Spinslinga and they were at the Phillipines leprosy “ prison”. Unfortunately I don’t know why the problem is endemic in armadillos and yes science fiction is often reality taken to interesting extremes….

      It's the least I could do, John, wish I could do more. In a response you wrote to me once that I don't need to own a boat to sail. That motivated me to get my ASA 101 certification. Then I found a local yacht club with a boat sharing program and boat owners always looking for crew and willing to share their knowledge. Long story short, your advice got me back into sailing and significantly improved my life, so thank you!

    Thank you John and Eli for such a touching tribute to all those lost to Leprosy all those years ago and all your previous hard work with those Leprosy patients John. This was a very sad episode and you covered the issue so well and with such respect to the lost. You commented that the island housed those from all over Greece. What would have been the highest number of patients at any one time? Also, were the shops and school run by those with leprosy or by those, who you mentioned, came to be with their family members? Or by Govt. and other volunteers/paid workers? I noticed the bars and locks on the doors...was crime an issue or was it just to protect looting after the closure of the colony?
    I hope you both are safe for the next big blow...next week? Fair 💨's and following 🌊's...GB

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  Před měsícem +1

      Hi Garth, We will find out the largest population on the island for you. All the services were provided by individuals on the island with leprosy - there were no govt or paid workers. I believe the numbers of family support people were low but folk with early stages of leprosy and the mild form would be fully functional and fit to do normal tasks. It's only the later stages with paralysis and wound infections that would out people in bed... I think the bars on the shops are a recent addition for security of the goods in those shops now as no-one stays on the island any more.
      And yes there was a blow coming through every 3 days for all of that month - so was a bit of a nuisance having to duck for cover so often! But we are fine... Thanks!

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks Garth for your interest!
      1. **Highest Number of Patients**: At its peak, Spinalonga housed around 400 patients. These were individuals suffering from leprosy who were sent to the island from various parts of Greece.
      2. **Operation of Shops and School**: The shops and the school on Spinalonga were primarily run by the patients themselves. This was part of the effort to create a self-sustaining community. Some patients' family members, who chose to move to the island to support them, also contributed to these operations. However, government and other external volunteers or paid workers were less common, as the island was largely isolated to prevent the spread of the disease.
      3. **Bars and Locks on Doors**: The presence of bars and locks on the doors can be attributed to several factors:
      - **Crime Prevention**: As with any community, there may have been some concerns about crime, and measures would have been taken to ensure the safety and security of the residents.
      - **Protection Against Looting**: After the closure of the colony in 1957, the buildings and structures on Spinalonga would have been susceptible to looting and vandalism. Bars and locks could have been installed or maintained to protect the remaining property.
      - **Containment**: Initially, these measures might have been partly to contain the patients and prevent them from leaving the island, though over time the community became more self-regulated.
      Hope this answers your questions Garth.
