Great chat, but one issue we have here in the uk is also seams to be prevalent with you guys. You all referring to the “front bumper”, it’s a nose cone. Or in the fia rule book a front fairing. It’s not a bumper.
I here parents referring to the nose cone as a bumper all the time here in the uk. What is the child meant to think? And what do you expect the child to use it for if you refer to it that way.
A kart has a bumper bar, has done for many years, and the nose cone is attached to it.
Everything else you say is spot on 👍

Appreciate this video guys, having been out of the sport a long while I was looking for some info on these bumpers. Sounds like the early 2000s were the good old days: metal rear bumper and exposed tires, rectangle box side pods that you couldn’t bash too much, and a nose designed to take some hitting but too much and it would rip off. Thanks!

I started karting in 1967. At 67 I got back into it in the 206 Masters class. Back when I started there were no bumpers of any kind. You knew, even as a Junior, to give anyone close to you room. If you didn't, you were going to pay a big price. It taught clean racing. And we really didn't have that many flips.
With todays young racers watching what the clowns in NASCRAP and even F1 do. Pushing, bumping and blatant blocking are the norm. If you can't pass someone clean, push them out of the way. Or if someone behind you is faster, blatantly and dangerously block them.
I think it's too late to eliminate bumpers and pods now. Today's drivers wouldn't be able to handle it. A lot of people would get hurt.

I mean I agree that exposed wheels made different maybe better racing samrter racing. but we cant overlook the fact that its much much unsafer. you jsut have more karts going up in the air.
Obviesly the bumper is a difficult topic then on the one hand it does decrease the danger of the starts expecially. on the other hand, especially as a driver if you know the bumper is in, its jsut super frustrating to continue the race. especially cause most of the time its some lght touch in a bad angle especially in the first few laps or in a good fight.
In my opinion the pushback bumper needs to stay and is a great part. BUT, in my opinion penaltys should only be applied if a driver complains about another driver and if in that case the bumper was in, he gets the 5 seconds. or an incident happens and atleast in europe the track is in almost every series I know filmed this days, stewards can go back and take a look at it and when one of the participants has the bumper in and was seen bumnping give him 5 seconds. same for starts.
the problem with that is obviesly personal. you need people to do that and I think usually theres rarely enough people helping already cause you just need so many to run a karting championship event properly.
I think the arguments are valid but especially the back bumper does jsut do his job whern it comes to safety.
I think the argument with pro drivers is the only one I think i would say just is a bad one. the chances of having big crashes is in my experience the same minis or adults in pro classes. and when we can do something for safety we should do it imo. ofc you can be careful but theres always those unfortunate circumstances and those are much rarer with the implemented parts.
interesting to listen to tho. good job

Watch a dirt circle race if you think open tires will help lol. Because it won’t.
