- This may be the only recording--at least the only one of which I know--which features the great Russian tenor singing in Italian. His Italian is actually very good, and the rendition, musically, is excellent.

Lemeshev had an utterly beautiful voice, and the highest compliment I can give is that he doesn’t sound like a Russian singing an Italian aria; he has made it his own, as have the greatest tenors in recorded history.

How blessed the Soviet Union was to have two silvery-voiced matinee idol tenors - Lemeshev and Koslowsky - singing their hearts out for nearly two generations of opera lovers.
I like Koslowsky too (he was luckier with his health, got 93 y.o.), but Lemeshew's voice has exceptional beauty and, of course, he is much more known internationally.

Are you familiar with the story about Adelina Patti singing "Una voce poco fa" for Rossini? She was also, you know, a good vocalist. However, this did not help.

When he sang this piece in Italian, it was quite different from other pieces in Russian. When I listened to this for the first time I even did not recognize his voice (I thought it may from Jussi or someone else...)
He's singing with one lung, maybe that's why?

It's very true what you're saying; his voice sounds like Björling's, just when he sings in Russian you don't realise it so well. No doubt Lemeshev's voice is one of the most beautiful tenor voices ever.

Was this after the tuberclosis and the concurrent lung surgery? Past generations were so much tougher that even the artists could withstand!
Thanks a lot for the video. It's sad that he didn't sing Donizetti more. Donizetti's operas were rarely staged in the Soviet theaters. I don't know why, because audience would have loved them.
What a pity there is no recording of him singing Lucia di Lammermoor! He could have been a great Edgardo!

Perfection in any human endeavor is unattainable, it doesn’t exist. Lemeshev’s performance obviously strikes _you_ as being perfect, but to say it for the rest of his audience is presumptuous.

Что Лемешев превосходный певец, не подлежит сомнению, но данное исполнение далеко от идеала. Ещё услышав первые такты вступления, мне захотелось воскликнуть: "Простите! А кого Неморино хоронит?!" И этот похоронный, недопустимо затянутый темп сохранялся все время, что сделало ritardando в конце первого куплета практически невозможным - оркестру просто пришлось остановиться, а, с другой стороны, неузнаваемо исказило настроение этого элегического, но вовсе не плаксивого, а оптимистического и даже страстного (см. хотя бы виртуозную восходящую финальную каденцию!) номера. Тонкие гармонические переливы также оказались погребены под этим похоронным отпеванием. Очень жаль.
Конечно, железный занавес способствовал такому недопониманию в исполнении зарубежного репертуара, неизбежному в таких условиях.
