Why not do the repairs during the quite parts of lockdown 2 years ago, construction workers didn't stop working during this period.
If the asphalt has a 7 year life span and was put in in 2012 should have been changed out in 2019. So it wouldn't have been in the pipeline

Yeah, in a perfect world maybe. But B1M works tirelessly to produce around 20 minutes of new video per week. Imagine how many talented people you need in order to produce hours of content per day, in a revolving cycle to allow time for research, production, editing, etc. It's not really a sustainable business model, which is why they moved largely to cheap, easy-to-produce reality TV.
The real shame is that these educational videos only get on the order of tens of thousands of views on average, while millions of people are watching the "cheap" reality shows, which really screws up the cost/reward curve.

Flights crossing the Atlantic were diverted to Canada, and Newfoundland became inundated with massive jetliners filled with bewildered and frustrated passengers who needed to be fed, housed, and entertained for nearly five days. The airline industry truly is a global web of interconnections.

Major airports here in America are usually owned by the city that they service or a multquasi government agency such as the port authorities of New York and New Jersey. When the airport needs to have some major renovation work such as replacing concrete runways, the city or government agency can sell municipal bonds to pay for that work. The airport charges the airlines for using the airport such as gate fees and those funds are then used to pay back those municipal bonds. I mention this because here in the United States any major airport half as busy as Gatwick will have several concrete runways so that way if one runway is shut down for any reason there is still one active runway that can be used. Cities and government agencies can usually raise a large sum of cash through those municipal bonds because they are hedged against the city's tax base. Just some food for thought for people in the London area to consider.

    • @JP_TaVeryMuch
      @JP_TaVeryMuch Před rokem

Thanks for the insight from 'over yonder.'
Our major problem here in Blighty (if you discount the historic lack of foresight in not planning for your common or garden RAF base to become a public airbase ~ after all, the early 20th century military airfield needed but one runway. If expansion were necessary then just roll and cut the grass and there's your 2nd runway) yes our problem is a lack of land.
Once you've realised that your repurposed RAF airfield just won't cut the mustard anymore, there's no nearby sweep of pastureland just sitting there waiting to be tarmaced. Hence the infamous 'Boris Island' idea of a five runway airport built in the Thames Estuary east of the capital being dismissed.
The planning laws are strict enough already as seen in the decades long fight for a third runway at Heathrow, so a Hong Kong style artificial island airport was deemed to be too too pie in the sky to even contemplate.
When the world has worked out how to fuel planes on vegetable oil or hydrogen then maybe the project will be revisited.

Okay I'm a near 80 year old "Pom" living in Australia. This video illuminates the best of the character of the British people; all the way from "it will only work if", "we all act as a single; very well-informed team," which they did and they delivered. "It will only work if;" there is smart management at every level in all of the organisations involved, specifically and noisily including engineering and the overnight teams on the ground doing the work. "It will only work if;" there is an awareness by senior management; that the teams on the ground are bailing them out, (should this work not have been done at the beginning of the Covid lockdowns, when everyone else is clearing their "too hard; maintenance backlog" ?). "It will only work next time if;" someone like the B1M team; gets out there and publicises it. Congratulations everybody........(ex-BA Comet-4Bs 1960s-70s) subscribed yonks ago, this is a great channel............ John

I love this episode because it explains something that even I didn't realise. Gatwick and Brum only have one runway. And these guys have to MAKE their own aggregates ON-SITE!!. And you have to get all of that airside while ATC are barking at you. I'd love to spend just one night learning how you guys do this. How long does it take for the asphalt to dry?

I live 20 minutes away from Gatwick, and I can confirm this airport is vital to businesses in the 25 miles radius. IIRC, a figure suggested it directly and indirectly supports up to 150K jobs in nearby towns.

And provides direct links to Europe, the US and Asia for the South East. I live 30 minutes from Gatwick, it's perfect. if it didn't exist my choice would be either Heathrow which is too far, and Southampton which is barely an airport

How is the asphalt going to harden/cure in such a short time frame, and then be able to withstand hugely heavy airplanes?

Hi Dee, asphalt cools naturally in the air and there is a strict monitoring process in place so that the runway can't reopen before the right temperatures have been achieved.

What about that special mix? What liquid asphalt is used, what additives are used, and how different is the mineral aggregate grading?

Hi f hank, Marshall asphalt is a tried and tested aviation asphalt that includes tighter aggregate grading and a selection of fine fillers to be more resistant to deformation from the heavy wheel loads of aircraft.
