      Jatinder Johnsy I was vaguely aware of it, due to of all things, wargaming (there's a company that made miniature figures of the cast). But knew nothing of the show until I stumbled upon it on Netflix. I was hooked after one episode. Binge watched every season in about two weeks and was say when I finished them.

    12 years ago we found a holiday let near Thetford. It turned out Dads Army filmed scenes there, the owners were part of the set, helping out. They told us the cast were a lovely down to earth bunch, the series hadn’t hit its mythical status yet, so the holiday home owners never really gave it much thought until years later. We have been there 4 times now, it’s great looking out across the farmlands knowing that we were sharing a piece of TV history, and occasionally we spot the background we recognise.
    RIP Ian Lavender, the platoon together again.

      Many years ago, I heard an ex- Second World War RAF pilot on TV say that the fughter pilots dreaded the Home Guard. According to him, they always assumed anyone and everyone parachuting out of a dog fight must be a German, and it was their duty to make sure he didn't land alive. This chap said, I hope flippantly, that the Home Guard probably finished off more Battle of Britain pilots than the Germans did.

    • @Benjiesbeenbetter.
      @Benjiesbeenbetter. Před 10 měsíci

      @mikebritcom3171 John Le Mesurier was actually a very good actor, but he wasn't often required to play anything other than authorty figures whose sole purpose was to support the plot. As most of his film and TV roles were half a day's work here and there, he appeared in the same sort of part in many things, which meant he did seem to always play the same roles.
      He sometimes got the chance to shine, as in his brief appearance in 1962's Jigsaw. He played the father of a missing young woman. It's a startling departure from his usual stuff. He had only a handful of lines but made an impact with them.
      He also won a BAFTA for his starring role in "Traitor". He was annoyed about it, though, as the plaque on a BAFTA award bears only the recipient's name and the title of the film or show. His read "John Le Mesurier- Traitor".
