  • One teenager is lucky to be alive after suffering cardiac arrest during a high school volleyball game at Loganville Christian Academy in Georgia. Claire Crawford, 17, told INSIDE EDITION: "I remember blacking out and waking up." Fortunately for the teen there was an Automated External Defibrillator nearby. Claire's body got a jolt from the defibrillator which was used by a school administrator and eventually helped her come back to consciousness. Her mom said that she thought they had lost her. #InsideEdition

This story is so important. Every single school needs to have a defibrillator and honestly multiple defibrillators at that with one always in the gym. I lost a classmate because of a similar situation. He was a basketball player and went into cardiac arrest during a game. There was no defibrillator anywhere. People just watched and took videos and pictures. He lost his life that day. It's just so important to have defibrillators at any high school sports games.

CPR quickies: if you're alone don't worry about giving breaths at all, just do chest compressions. Don't stop compressions to give breaths, don't stop compressions for others to give breaths.
Press pretty hard, but not with all your might.
Try to give close to 2 compressions per second but a little less, however a lot more than 1 compression per second.
Optimal goal is 100 per minute. Coincidentally the song "staying alive" is used in training (you know, "Ah ah ah ah staying alive staying alive!")
Always call 911 for help before you start compressions if there's nobody around to call 911 for you or do compressions for you.

I know this is old but I looked over several videos about this, including a fairly long one featuring Claire, her family, and other people involved. As a medical doctor, I believe this event could have been prevented.
Claire had been suffering from chest pain for quite a long time, and it was characterized by radiation to the left arm. Just before this happened, she had noted that it was getting worse. She had been seen by several doctors before who focused on therapy and were suspecting things like nerve impingement. What they did NOT consider was the pain was of CARDIAC origin, most likely because she was only 17. However, pain radiating to the left arm is characteristic of cardiac ischemia (lack of blood flow to the heart), it's something basic from med school. It was only after the cardiac arrest that a cardiac evaluation was done, showing obstruction of 3 coronary arteries that eventually lead to her undergoing bypass surgery. As to why someone so young had pediatric atherosclerosis (blockage of the arteries), it could be for many reasons like severe hyperlipidemia (elevation of cholesterol levels), though I wasn't able to find any news articles or videos about it.
Moral of the story is that simply because a medical condition is typically found in older adults, you forget to consider it for a young person. It can have fatal consequences, although fortunately, Claire survived.

When I was freshman in highschool one of my fellow class mates suffered a heart attack as well. It was “minor” and he was okay, but it was completely out of the blue. We were all taking laps in gym class. Pretty simple thing the teacher wants us to do to warm up for the hour and during that time he just collapse.
When I finally spoke with him about he said, “My stomach almost felt weightless while all my weight was on my chest and I just dropped.” I don’t think he ever had an accident after that. Still kinda freaky tho.

There was definitely some medical negligence involved in the development of this situation. Claire had been having symptoms for months. They were a group of symptoms that can present in a person who is experiencing myocardial ischemia (inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscles). She even told her doctor that she thought there might be a problem with her heart. But her doctor refused to order any tests for heart condition/heart function. Instead, he referred her for physical therapy.

the video says nothing about her being "out of shape", and you'd be REALLY hard pressed to get yourself so out of shape that you have a heart attack at 17. more likely than not, it was caused by something else.
