Started for the family, continued for himself.
It was for himself the whole time. If he had just swallowed his stupid pride and accepted Elliot's offer to pay for the cancer treatment and Elliot's offer to give Walt a job at Gray Matter then none of this would have happened. It was never for his family, he just told himself that to justify it to himself.
It was always about his desire to "have a say" in his life, to have a feeling of power, a feeling of control, the feeling that he had some amount of choice in how his life went.

@@matthewwatson5029 still part of it was for the family. Yes his ego and pride didn’t like the idea of handouts. But it’s obvious initially it was for the family, for example when he made up that golden number 700 something thousand was all in the intent of specifically giving it to his family.
@Matthew Watson I strongly disagree. He did do it for his family at first. You forget that he never even wanted to undergo treatment and wanted to live his remaining life the way he wanted but his family pressured him to. And when he started to cook, he had a specific amount that he needed to raise(700k) and leave for his family because he wasn't optimistic about the treatment actually working.
He had to do things he never thought he could and he was able to because he knew he was already a dead man and he did them when he hadn't even struck gold and then he met Gus and made more money than he ever thought and his treatment was actually working. He could have taught someone else the formula and stopped cooking but he continued and that's when he started doing it for himself because he enjoyed it
@Matthew Watson you could say that he didn't collect money from Elliot because of his ego(and I totally understand his decision). In fact, it was that same ego and paranoia that led to his downfall, but you cannot say he started for himself

This is why I love this edit. That depressing and touching music playing while we can see flashbacks from earlier seasons. You can feel Walter sees them too in his head and it seems like he feels nostalgia because like he said, doing these things made him feel alive but he can't be really happy, he still remembers all bad consequences of his actions and how his pride destroyed so many lives
When Walter discovered that he had cancer and that he didn't have much time, the thing that worried him most wasn't about providing his family, it was about feeling truly alive.
I think it was both, he wanted to provide to his family but also he wanted to make a legacy, something to be remebered for, and he choose wrong, ironically, he will always be remembered because of it.
True, I think he knew deep down that his family would be fine even if he didn’t provide for them, Skyler, Hank, and Marie would work extremely hard to make sure Walt Jr and Holly are fine. But he refused to die as a weak and cowardly man.

True, it was a life of constant excitement where he did what he actually wanted to do rather than what others told him to do. The minute Hank died, he realised what a grave mistake he had made.

The expressions at the end show a lot: Walter white was unhappy and bored, Heisenberg was alive and evil, but mr lambert died with a blissful expression, knowing he saved Jesse and his family and got revenge for Hank
He was going to kill Jesse before he realised he was a slave

this edit is beautiful, do keep in mind before he broke bad he was bored, miserable, overworked, stressed. he finally got to live something, he was poor, mistreated, he got to be apart something feel good at something. hardly anyone noticed his emotions, skyler did 1 little thing that still didnt change him. jesse noticed more than anyone, he ruined his life but made it better than what it originally was.

This show changed my view of the world and really changed my life I was in a bad place but it changed me somehow
The truth of breaking bad is that is all about a Chemistry genius that got no opportunity on his life (or wasted it with all the Grey Matter situation), and found a place where his talents were recognized and he was respected for it and for the first time he didn't felt like a loser, people judge Walt and his pride but he's just a man with destroyed pride before meth, that felt like a god when he got respected for the first time in his life

Breaking bad is the saddest series I've seen I can't help but shed at least one tear at the end seeing Walter's family destroyed because of a single page in a book is sad and see that the life of everyone he met was destroyed and even sadder

I work in hospice. I have on and off for many years. I live a life that most people think, I'm crazy for. For some reason, this entire moral of this show doesn't click with the people who call me crazy. What I mean by that, is most of us are just existing and you don't realize it until you're on your death bed.

His family and the world hates him, all the money he made he couldn’t spend and most of it was taken by the people who killed Hank and, he did all this so he could provide for his family and so that his family remembers him as a good guy but in the end his family didn’t want to take his money and they all saw him as a monster. The show is truly the greatest of all time. A master piece
