How to make a fire pit from a rusty old truck wheel with a $100 eBay stick welder
Vložit

- I have been using a truck wheel sitting on bricks as a fire pit for a while and decided legs would be better and a grate would stop the wood falling through. This was also a chance to practice and maybe improve my terrible arc welding.
I use this firepit to burn pallet offcuts and thicker branches and look at while drinking lemon squash, I have a larger burn barrel for burning green leafy awkward garden waste.

Wheel is off an old Bedford truck, 50mm ~5mm wall (2" SCH 80?)pipe came from a free curbside badly built workbench, 12mm (1/2") rebar came from a parking lot. Welding rods are some 2mm general purpose ones which didn't work very well for attaching the legs to the wheel and then 3.2mm 6013 rods for the rest which were much easier to use.
Tools in order of appearance are:
rafter/framing square

Some people are commenting that they already sell them at the store but there's a satisfaction to using something that you made with your own hands. That's just my opinion
What a bunch of negative asshats.
The ones from the store are 20ga ungraded pot metal that'll wear through in under a season.
Mine as well mate.
Grand opinion I say...
As I recall, the key to becoming a good welder is: Practice, practice, fire pit... (Nice one guy. Thanks!)
The best piano player in the world can't tell you how to play a piano and a welder can't tell you how to weld. You have to get under a hood to learn how to weld.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! The work, the design, the way it is presented and especially the end when the piece is thrown down on the ground and a fire is created. Respect!
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching to the end - most people get bored by then and don't get to see that bit. They don't know what they are missing!
Very creative, you given me some good ideas of the fire pit.
I gave this guy a thums up because we all start out this way. On a wheel there are bolt holes to use as referance points for the legs. Remember, center lines on the wheel and center lines on the pipes for easy set up. Also, once all legs are welded, a simple measurement from ground to highest point wiill give you your angle for all of them👍 love the video
Cheers!
Really pleasing to watch your build, and the layout techniques you used. I have a 24 inch wheel I plan to make into a fire ring; perfect size for a patio fire pit with no other purpose than to just watch a fire burn in the evening. As some others have observed, there is much satisfaction to be derived from designing and building a project yourself. I often gain new ideas and construction skills just from watching what someone else has done. Your fire pit is well built and will last a lifetime plus. Good job. Regards - John
Cheers John! I know the layout seems excessive to some people but it is the way I generally do things, usually it makes it easier. If you put a tray of sand and/or firebricks under the pit it should help your patio not catch on fire.
The first clip when you flipped it over, i legit said out loud "done"
Very ingenious how you used the pipe as flat stock! I would have never thought of that.
Cheers, I put this of for a while because I didn't have any flat wide enough, it's a good solution if you have time and pipe to spare and don't need the flat to be very flat!
Fire pit from a old rim is a awesome idea. This pit will out last any other pits made from plates.
Just a small tip, turn up your amps on your welder until you get good penetration it to the steel
thanks! yes this should last a long time. I think the welder was turned up as high as it goes, maybe not quite as it is a 15 amp machine plugged into a 10 amp socket :)
Really cool!! Thank you for the no music through out the entire video! The music really kills me.
The soothing sound of grinding and banging stuff is music enough, thanks for watching!
Nice
A great job that will outlast all others and the satisfaction of being hand made by yourself, fantastic work pal!
Fun to watch video. Great job. No music with sound effects fabulous. This is great for kids to watch.
Thanks! I try to keep it kid friendly, apart from the subject matter occasionally but the title and thumbnail should be enough to let parents decide if it is suitable or not.

I wish my projects would go that fast! Well done!
Thanks! The magic of editing makes everything fast, this took ages even with welding in the darkest hours of the night, still would have been a full day or so of work in one go though.
Honestly I thought it was gonna be a joke when he turned the rim over like..”there you go fire pit “🤣🙈
that would be way too easy :)
SPE
Right?!! But I’ve seen videos like that 🤣
This guy is overkill on everything, if you want to travel 100 miles when the destination is 10 miles than yes great video !
Hey, I resemble that comment! I was going for overkill on this, so thanks I guess. Thanks for watching too!
Amazing I haven’t even reached halfway through the video yet 🤣👌🏾
Cheers! hope you liked the second half. And watched the rest of it :)
Man this is fantastic...that's the best fire pit I've seen! You could fix a grate to lay on top of it and cook on it with wood or charcoal when you get done cooking lay the grate to the side and you have a fire pit with a fire already going to sit around drink some cold beer and talk to your friends and family!! You done an amazing job you're truly blessed with a great talent! Thanks for sharing that with us keep up the good work and may God bless you and your family and friends!! How anybody could give this a thumbs down I'll never understand must be some miserable people with no appreciation for life in general! Like I said you done an amazing job such a great idea!!!!
Thanks for the kind words, I have cooked in it with a camp stove but for proper cooling I'd want something a bit smaller, higher and rectangular. Really need to fire this up again before summer comes around.
So its true what they say simple things please simple minds:-)))))))))))))))))))
I thought you said it was complicated? :)
Wow, talk about dedication...
Great project to practice using a powerarc welder with.
Nice job from recycled metal parts. Something useful and creative.
Cheers, most of the bits just went where it made sense but I spent a bit of time working out the grate.
Good job. I too used an old truck wheel. Only difference was I was lazy and sat the wheel on a tapered metal bucket turned upside down. Left all the other holes open for air movement.
That's a good solution, I think I put bricks under the big hole a few times but the stud holes didn't let enough air in, leaving the big hole open let too much stuff fall through and not burn.
And
Very good outcome mate, why would anyone give a thumbs down, I'de copy that design any day!
Thanks! That's CZcams I guess, it is what it is.
I've been trying to think of projects for all those truck wheels out there.
Доброго времени суток, всем! Извините не могу я всё - это досмотреть. Всё можно сделать на много проще, но "мастер" не ищет лёгких путей. Ребята Вы "уникумы", удачи Вам!
Good day, everyone! Sorry I can't finish this. Everything can be done much easier, but the "master" is not looking for easy ways. You guys are unique, good luck!
Спасибо!
@@lapislignum Всегда рад помочь!
Love the angle grinder height adjustment jig. Might have to make one for myself.
on some grinders just holding the guard against the benchtop will work, on this grinder the arbor sticks out past the guard so it had to be screwed to the formply scrap, gives better stability too!
yeah sometimes I clamp the guard to the bench and move the work piece into it. this works well for cutting rings from large cylinders.
Awesome ! Thank you for the Class

I’m not a Steele worker, or welder but this was oddly satisfying!!
I'm not a steel worker or welder either, thanks for watching!
Great job ! ⚙️🔩🔧⚒️ Great video 🎥 !! _ Congratulations! 👍 🇧🇷
Holy Hell!!! I’d soooo go buy some plate plate!!!😂😂😂! Lots of extra time in tearing apart the pipe to flatten it!!
while it's cheaper than the hardware store my local steel place is too expensive so I avoid going there. Kinda wanted to see how much work it would be to turn pipe back into plate anyway.
Absolutely awesome craftsmanship!!!!! Don’t know if your is the standard 22.5” wheel or not... check and see... if it is... the standard Weber kettle grill cooking grate fits perfect on these for cooking!!!! Cooks amazing 🥩’s!
I'll have to measure it, put a camp stove in it once but have a heat beads BBQ for cooking, it's not bad but I want to make a longer rectangular charcoal grill some day, maybe that fits on/in a tabletop
Beautiful to watch. Hope I get that skill one day. Cheers
This was an excellent example of taking a simple project and making it extremely complicated. Well done!
Cheers! I wouldn't say extremely complicated but opinions vary. Loved your work in "the fresh prince of bel air"
@@lapislignum tack on a couple legs and a few pieces a rebar so the wood doesn't fall through the hole and your done. Extremely simple..... but opinions may vary. Lol
That's alot of extra effort..I tossed a rim on the ground and It works fine
I did that before, this works better
Me too! Seems like a lot of extra work.
Same here dude. Works fine as is
Bet you didn't get money for millions of views though.
what materialy should i put inside, if any?
Nice job I just built a firepit now have the same problem trying to get the bottom leg angles ,think I might try your idea with the grinder ,thanks for the idea
Thanks! You can use a marker instead of the grinder then cut to the line if it works better, this way works well on wood legs too.
This proves one man's garbage is another man's good ungarbage.
A show-off in geometry :-)
Kudos!
Cheers!
great job, very inspinring! Cheers from Brazil mate!
Obrigado por assistir!
HEAVY Duty 🔥 pit!!
I know a guy that made a fire pit out of an entire truck.
He was trying to weld a trailer hitch to the frame, but he ended up with a fire pit instead.....
Hahahahha
Good greif!
Talk about to much time on your hands. His skills are nice.
Rim+ 4 legs = done
That is AWESOME!
That's pretty cool.
I to see all the people with talent is very good keep the good work
I'll try to, thanks!
Well done!
Saudações do Brasil,ficou muito bom,trabalho minucioso,e paciência.
NOTA 10.
Saudações da Austrália, obrigado, que bom que você gostou!
Cuts flat pieces from pipe, then lays some CAD on us. Just WOW!
Possibly overall, I'm not very good at drawing and try to avoid measuring when I can.
This is what I wanted to see
Thank you
Very nice job
Que hermosas manos trabajadoras Dios las cuide mucho! Eres genial!!!
Muy amable, gracias!
Loved it. I'm going to make one now
Very nice work. Ps. Metal comes in flat pieces also. May save a lot of work. But we work with what we have.
To mucho trabajo amigo
Finally, a maker that can weld & can stick weld at that.
I would have used expanded sheet metal, but the rebar with last longer. Good job.
Thanks! My stick welding is average at best but this had held together pretty well. I didn't have any expanded metal or mesh but the rebar suits it better IMHO and will last as long as the rest of it. Thanks for watching!
That welding is some of the crapiest welding ive seen . You have to get out more when it comes to welding haha. In the welding scene they call that grape welds.
@@lewandlo there's a welding scene? watch my rocket stove video if you want to see more questionable welding, I think I manage to do some bits better and some bits worse than in this video, need to do some drills when the weather is less flammable.
Looks like pigeon 💩 🤣🤣
Mad skills. Like it. Thanks.
Thanks! you're most welcome.
I love how you utilize your pipe stock into flat stock. Great job.
Thanks! Use what you've got I suppose.
Cara mengikat besi beton
I used the open center type truck wheels and throwed 4 firebricks under the bottom edge so it could breath and it works great.
Lots of ways to do it. I still need to pick up the nails from the last fire I had in mine.
Great idea mate, watch some welding videos on CZcams.. stick welding carnt be rushed 👍
There's always that one person...
PRETTY SURE IT WAS JUST THE WAY IT WAS FILMED...
Cool fire pit.
Thanks!
Good idea
Nice job! It just seems like more work than it needed to be
Cheers!
Very good job, i love it ,:-))
thanks!
Bought one at Home Depot on sale in 20 minutes. Gave me a lot of time to use it.😎
Gotcha!! I see said the blind man!
Excelente 🇩🇴🇩🇴🌎
Very nice... 👍
They’re the best fire places I’ve ever used 👌🏽
I like the fireworks. Lol
It is amazing what someone can do with a truck wheel and a powerarc welder.
Good video
Pretty cool design !! I love the bottom design..
Thanks! I tried a few patterns but that one was the best and simplest.
At first u thought u was making template for CNC Machine :)
CAD may look like overkill for what it ended up being but it didn't take too long and having a template to follow made it very easy to cut all the rebar
Compliment ... you are Genius 👍
muy buenas idea y sin mucho dinero.
Nice, but more elaborate than necessary. Get two wheels, weld together, add some expanded steel mesh.
No... I think I’ll take pipe, cut it into little pieces, instead finding some scrap plate. Then I will double check it on a CAD program. I think that’s more expensive in labor then 20 store bought fire pits.
Good job.
Thanks!
I like the last scene. So dramatic. :D
Haha thanks, I think most People don't watch the end :)
No, people definitely will watch till end. Because they will eagerness to see the fire pit in action. I like the centre grill design though.
Thanks!
Nicely done! I have no skills whatsoever in metal fabrication, so......I went out and bought one. 😉
Thanks! Buying one is a much more sensible option, they are really cheap here if you buy one when summer is coming, just depends on how good you are at planning ahead.
Put a small plate under holes - for ash and embers. It prevent your grass for charring.
This lives on gravel, but I plan on getting something to go under - it would make cleaning up the ash, nails and staples much easier.
La verdad lo hace el mismo muy complicado .no hay tanta necesidad de hacer todo eso
А мне чертеж на компьютере очень понравился,ну ,думаю,щас взлетит😂😂😂
You are an artist. Love it but. Whant one!
Thanks! make one :)
Buena la idea pro es Demasiado y exagerado proceso para una pieza tan simple y de un uso tan sencillo ...
Cool fire pit. Reminded me of when everything was built to last, but I didn't understand the first jig you built, you had everything you needed right there. Anyway scrib your name and date on it. It'll be here a long time.
Thanks! The first jig was to locate each leg equally around the wheel, at the same height and lined up with the stud holes. It also held each leg in place while tack welding it to the wheel. It made more sense when I showed moving the jig to do the next leg but I cut it out as the video was too long.
@@lapislignum definitely inscribe your name and the build date
Good idea, I have a set of letter and number punches that would do this well.
@@lapislignum im sure you are well aware so dont think im patronizing you but be sure to grind away the desired area to be inscribed... Buff it nice then seal the inscribed spot with clear laquer or what have you...
So you know that wont rust out for a long time
Thank you please post more project
Well done video👍 love to reuse old metal. 🇨🇦🥓🍻
thanks! I need to do some more welding, don't really have any projects requiring it at the moment though, and no metal bits asking to be made into something.
Thanks for reply 👍 I started to build a 100 gallon smoker 3/4 into the job and have salvaged all my materials. The local scrap yard is drop off or take what you need. I'll be looking for rims soon. I showed my wife your pit and she said Oh yes please!!! Thanks for taking the time to post your videos 🇨🇦🥓🍻.
Ps. I subscribed to your channel so I can find more of your projects 👍
I've seen some very nice smoker builds, don't know enough about it to make one myself but have vague plans to make a charcoal burner that can sit on/near a table, probably in the Argentinian style. Good luck with it, and thanks for the sub!
Thanks for sharing
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Thank you

Welding on the legs was really bad. Using MMA Welding Vertical travelling up would have gave a weld to penetrate the joining metals, that down motion that you did left a light skin full of porosity.
The job did turn out nice, try using MIG for that style of welding
I'm not claiming to be a good welder but the legs have held on great, the grate has popped a few welds because they aren't great and it gets very hot there and expands and contracts a lot.
I have a MIG but bought this inverter as I was sick of renting a gas bottle that I almost never used, have a roll of fluxcore wire but I don't like using it (my welds with fluxcore look even worse than my stick welds) and it's a (heavy) transformer machine so I can't be bothered lugging it out of where it lives.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Who else looked away for a second when he began to weld
If you put a lid on it correctly and hinge with a vent pipe, you could cook on it. Make sure you burn several fires real hot in it before cooking in it. Wash out real good before first cooking.
I cooked with a camp stove in it once, got too hot. A hotplate on top that swung out of the way to put more wood in would be simple.
Time well spent, what else can you do good???🤪🤪
well I can't weld good, have a look at my channel if you like, there's a bit of different stuff in there. Thanks for watching!
Как бы там не было, может и усложнил процесс, но сделал САМ! Молодец!
Я не очень хорошо рисую карандашом. Спасибо за просмотр!
I like it
But that also was a genius move with the wooden template.
Cheers, I usually do that I used of lining stuff up by eye, makes the welding easier for a hack Ike me too.
Our daughter tripped and feel next to a wheel which was being used as a fire pit. She had a severe burn on her leg. Use stone it’s still hot but not like a branding Iron.
Sorry to hear that, I'm pretty paranoid with kids around fire but there's only so much you can do. Was thinking of welding a "handrail" to the lip which would be a bit less hot if people fell on it.
Kids will be kids. Your responsible for watching them around fire. Stone pits not portable. Big disadvantage for me.
My next fire pit will be my washing machine drum when the washe stops working.
Маятниковая пила - зачет!
Харашо иметь вещи зделаные своими руками( из трубы). 😁
Tanto trabalho pra no final fazer uma coisa tão simples.
I could have done the same thing but with half the work you put in it
Could have? Lol. Could you have done the same thing but with twice as much work though?
I use two 24.5s bolted together and drop a manual flywheel in.
,amigo the proyect.very good sorry the weldin very bad.😁 .good day.
Thanks! Don't be sorry I know the welding is garbage, it's more than good enough for this though. Thanks for watching!
