How to make a fire pit from a rusty old truck wheel with a $100 eBay stick welder

  • I have been using a truck wheel sitting on bricks as a fire pit for a while and decided legs would be better and a grate would stop the wood falling through. This was also a chance to practice and maybe improve my terrible arc welding.
    I use this firepit to burn pallet offcuts and thicker branches and look at while drinking lemon squash, I have a larger burn barrel for burning green leafy awkward garden waste.
    0:00 the wheel
    0:07 measuring and marking leg length

    Wheel is off an old Bedford truck, 50mm ~5mm wall (2" SCH 80?)pipe came from a free curbside badly built workbench, 12mm (1/2") rebar came from a parking lot. Welding rods are some 2mm general purpose ones which didn't work very well for attaching the legs to the wheel and then 3.2mm 6013 rods for the rest which were much easier to use.

      The best piano player in the world can't tell you how to play a piano and a welder can't tell you how to weld. You have to get under a hood to learn how to weld.

    I gave this guy a thums up because we all start out this way. On a wheel there are bolt holes to use as referance points for the legs. Remember, center lines on the wheel and center lines on the pipes for easy set up. Also, once all legs are welded, a simple measurement from ground to highest point wiill give you your angle for all of them👍 love the video

    Really pleasing to watch your build, and the layout techniques you used. I have a 24 inch wheel I plan to make into a fire ring; perfect size for a patio fire pit with no other purpose than to just watch a fire burn in the evening. As some others have observed, there is much satisfaction to be derived from designing and building a project yourself. I often gain new ideas and construction skills just from watching what someone else has done. Your fire pit is well built and will last a lifetime plus. Good job. Regards - John

    • @lapislignum
      @lapislignum  Před 5 lety +1

      Cheers John! I know the layout seems excessive to some people but it is the way I generally do things, usually it makes it easier. If you put a tray of sand and/or firebricks under the pit it should help your patio not catch on fire.

You done an amazing job you're truly blessed with a great talent! Thanks for sharing that with us keep up the good work and may God bless you and your family and friends!! • @lapislignum
      @lapislignum  Před 5 lety +1

      That's a good solution, I think I put bricks under the big hole a few times but the stud holes didn't let enough air in, leaving the big hole open let too much stuff fall through and not burn.

      No... I think I’ll take pipe, cut it into little pieces, instead finding some scrap plate. Then I will double check it on a CAD program. I think that’s more expensive in labor then 20 store bought fire pits.

    Cool fire pit. Reminded me of when everything was built to last, but I didn't understand the first jig you built, you had everything you needed right there. Anyway scrib your name and date on it. It'll be here a long time.

    • @lapislignum
      @lapislignum  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks! The first jig was to locate each leg equally around the wheel, at the same height and lined up with the stud holes. It also held each leg in place while tack welding it to the wheel. It made more sense when I showed moving the jig to do the next leg but I cut it out as the video was too long.

    Welding on the legs was really bad. Using MMA Welding Vertical travelling up would have gave a weld to penetrate the joining metals, that down motion that you did left a light skin full of porosity.
    The job did turn out nice, try using MIG for that style of welding

    • @lapislignum
      @lapislignum  Před 4 lety

      I'm not claiming to be a good welder but the legs have held on great, the grate has popped a few welds because they aren't great and it gets very hot there and expands and contracts a lot.
      I have a MIG but bought this inverter as I was sick of renting a gas bottle that I almost never used, have a roll of fluxcore wire but I don't like using it (my welds with fluxcore look even worse than my stick welds) and it's a (heavy) transformer machine so I can't be bothered lugging it out of where it lives.
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    If you put a lid on it correctly and hinge with a vent pipe, you could cook on it. Make sure you burn several fires real hot in it before cooking in it. Wash out real good before first cooking.

    • @lapislignum
      @lapislignum  Před 4 lety

      I cooked with a camp stove in it once, got too hot. A hotplate on top that swung out of the way to put more wood in would be simple.
