As a former, now retired trucker, (1980-2006) the roadlife has always been dangerous. I came across so many crazy people, been robbed, had my chains stolen off a load by another trucker while I was taking a restroom break. Detained by FBI with a shotgun to my head because they thought I was drug running, Crossed paths with two different serial killers, and last but not least had two different drunks plow into my rig. Even more crap I can barely remember.

I wonder how many among us are active serial killers.
Goble, Davis, Ford, Rhoades, Nellsch, Jesperson, et al are the trucker serial killers we know about. There’s no telling how many more are out here that we don’t know about.

@azjoe_6310 I've thought about the notion that it's not as safe now as it used to be as it sure seems more dangerous. Statistically speaking it's actually safer if you look at crime/homacide percentages compared to 10, 20 or 30 years ago. I'm now convinced that with current instantaneous 2 minute news clips from everywhere it's just precieved to be more dangerous. I live in Colorado and got this news snippet, 20 years ago I likely wouldn't have known this crime ever took place. According to statistics these crimes were happening slightly more often 20 years ago however we only really knew about local crimes or major national crimes so we precieved it to be safer.

Truck stops are “THE”most dangerous place for a truck driver outside of the vehicle. I made the mistake of staying at the TA in downtown nashville years ago. I almost was robbed. Definitely learned a valuable lesson that night. From that moment on, I started to change my approach to driving. Don’t sleep in and around major cities, if at all possible. Memphis, Detroit, Chicago truck stops are even worse. If I had to make a delivery, I would stay 20-30 miles away and just wake up early. Truck drivers are like food for criminals. Stay strapped and safe out there! God bless that poor man! I hope they catch the dirt bag the took the life of a man who was just trying to provide for his family. It’s a damn shame😢

I could write a book about my years on the road as a trucker. Whenever I had valuables, or even frozen turkeys, on board, I was told to back the truck against a wall so they can't open the back door. I heard from drivers that thieves peeled the top off a trailer like a sardine can to get inside. I drove back in the day without computers, a bingo card and two log books - if I had an expensive load like cigarets i was suppose to call in every two hours. Going through cities like NYC, thugs used to spray dirt on the windshield if you sat in traffic, then demanded money to wipe it off. Many cops were assholes, especially the ones that "owned" a strip of the interstate, and the same goes for tow-truck companies - highway pirates, they were. Having been one of the very few female drivers going solo cross-country, it was even harder. I got harassed many times by lot attendants about whether or not I was a "lot lizard". Repair shops that claim they fixed it but didn't - and you end up with air breaks locking up on a sheet of ice. The people at pick-up and then at drop-off were a-holes most of the time and gave me a lot of crap. But I think there are more women drivers now, I hope they realize how hard it was for us who entered this "men-only" profession....and that "we look out for one another" is BS. I have plenty of stories about road-range incidents "owner vs union" and other assorted fun. Myself I had 10 years of constant hazing by other drivers. But the dangers have always been there. Bless this man and his family, and I hope they get the killer and put him in the general population - he won't last long. Better yet - we need a death penalty. Be safe out there, people.....

Particularly the FBI, which should be investigating these crimes because it has to do with interstate commerce. But we all should know by now, that this is obviously not going to happen. I would even suggest they want this chaos to continue. Through their inaction and ill focused behavior with investigations that are more political in nature. They obviously don’t care

My ex had to tie his doors together when there was a trailer pickup/ drop-off near the border in CA. All night there were people trying to get into the cab. @@1Way. Yes, I agree. ( scary night ) Thing is, it is almost like a disease. These types of incidents are spreading across the country and also in small towns. Though border towns have always been sketchy, the kind of crime infestation that was and is still occurring in border towns. Has been spreading throughout the United States.
Like I mentioned before, third world crime has come to the United States through either the migrant crisis, or third rate citizens committing these crimes. And the fact that our justice system is broken and adopting Marxist ideology through social justice means, they are not only allowing criminals to commit these crimes, they are selectively prosecuting whoever they feel are stopping them from destroying the very institutions, communities, and social structures that our country was founded upon.
Be safe and careful out there! Because those people doing this damage, don’t care about your ethnicity, sex, religion, or affiliation. The fact that you are a citizen, puts a target on your back.

I drove for 2 OTR companies, both of which required drivers to serve Canada. You might be able to enter Canada with a handgun in your truck, but I would think it would cause a huge time delay because all these trips are unplanned. You get dispatched in Detroit or upstate NY & an hour & a half later you are at the border entering. There's no place to store the weapon in the USA before entering because we often enter in 1 city & exit at another. Drivers who only operate in the US probably are free to carry without concern.

There is no federal law or DOT regulation prohibiting firearms in CMVs.
State law applies to possession of firearms in CMVs, just as any other motor vehicles.
Whether you can lawfully carry in a cmv depends on the states where you run. If you’re on a southeast regional (aka Republican states), you can freely carry in a cmv.
If, however, you run in the northeast (aka Democrat-run sh*tholes), you will have a problem with a gun in the truck.

Truck drivers do NOT look out for each other. They will get into fistfights and worse over the fuel que at those pumps, over a parking space to sleep.. Truck drivers are constantly under stress. The pay is abysmal, they are under constant pressure for time, both by regulation and screaming dispatchers and dock personnel. The police are definitely out to ruin them, dumb laws and unreasonable situations are the norm. Lot lizards bothering drivers, other drivers sabotaging each other. A common thing is pulling the 5th wheel release on sleeping or away from their truck drivers. Watch near a truck stop. You won't got 2 weeks without one truck dropping a trailer while leaving because of sabotage. Yes, still the drivers fault because they should pretrip each time they move.
Trucking is now an utterly miserable and honestly not worth it job 99% of the time. I because a Sourdough for 3 years and then retired. Those who know know what that means.
Get a good safety record. That's just as much luck as skill today. Then go do that job few can, get your money and get out. One of the happiest days in my life was letting my medical expire and kicking my CDL back down to a regular Class C. Only getting married and when my kids were born healthy made me happier.
There's nothing fun or good about commercial driving in America anymore. It's a horrible job and anyone being honest who actually did it recently will tell you no different.

I am pro-guns as a deterrent to a totalitarian government. As for gun use for personal safety. It seems to rely on who gets the drop on who.
I’ve lived in Major Cities, drove trucks through areas best avoided. Yet, despite 14 years of driving truck all over the United States, no one has ever attempted to rob me. Some might say, I was lucky. 14 years lucky is a lot of luck. I have another suggestion.
    1. My attitude is a no nonsense alert attitude with my head on a swivel. I’m not rude or impolite nor am I friendly.
    2. I spent as little time in truck convenience stores and restaurants as possible. I would do my business and go back to my truck.
    3. Basic security goes a long way. If someone wants to get into a trailer, they will. However, most thieves are lazy looking for easy pickings. It is much easier to get into a trailer with only a plastic seal than one with a big steel lock. Same goes with the cab. I would keep the curtain to the sleeper berth closed. When parked, all of the cab windows were covered. How many thieves want to try to break into a blacked out truck? Is there someone or something in there? Might there be a shotgun waiting to blow their heads off. Too much risk when there are so many to choose from.
    4. I listened to my gut/intuition. I have pulled into many places to take a break only to pull right back out of them because my intuition was sending up red flags. I’ve changed my routing on that same basis many times. The safety of my truck and freight is my responsibility and nobody else’s.
That’s how I did it. I have no stake in the game since I am retired.

Read most of the comments and decided to add my two cents. I started driving in '72 and ended in '83 after l went back to school for a career change. Got caught up in the '73 truckers shutdown. Not too many problems for me there. Just had to avoid the truck stops as most would let you in but not let you out. Oh, and three attempted highjackings. Mr. Ruger contributed a lot to stopping those. Came through Mobile, Alabama one night after a 15 year old kid threw an 80+lb chunk of cement through a trucker's winshield and killed him. Cops arrested the kid few days later later when he started bragging about what he had done. Started carrying a hand held spotlight to sweep the overpasses. Several weeks later, just east of Monroe, Louisiana, l came up to an overpass and started sweeping it. Another truck coming up behind me slowed down to my speed and stayed with me. By the time l got to Jackson, Mississippi, there were 15 trucks behind me. I could only run 52 mph but none of those guys passed me until I turned off on I-55 southbound. Sure was a lot of headlight flashing as they passed me.
After l went back to school, l continued to drive over the road for a short time on weekends. One day one of my professors and his wife joined me as l was eating lunch and the wife asked if l had a gun in my truck. We were not allowed to have guns on campus. Told her l did. She replied that she had heard a lot of trucker carried guns and was curious if l did. We talked about it awhile and then she told me nothing more would be said about it to anyone else.
When l quit driving things were changing, all the new stuff was becoming law, you had to go to driving school to get a CDL. I do not know about all the driving schools, but the local one where l lived sure did not teach much about real life driving.

its more dangerous than people hear about and its a skill , a survivsl skill u must learn as a trucker or even a 6th sense to recognize dangerous places/people , best advice to a new trucker is this aint no road trip, work the loads and try not to talk to people unless u have to and try like hell to look like u know what your doing

This is a poorly written news segment. Was he killed at the truck stop? Was he killed on a road nearby? Was he killed 100 miles down the road? It sounded like at the truck stop parking lot since Love's employee found him apparently. So the rest of the people at that exact truck stop sure seem pretty calm about it. Just all like "Yeah, shit happens."

That's crazy. I wonder if this was on truck stop property, or maybe he parked down the street in an unlit area? A lot of times, you can't find room at the truck stop, so you have to move further down the road in a sketchy area just to take your break. I never got much sleep like that. I hope there is some surveillance camera footage. Very sad.

During my 2 years trucking when I 1st started out I never locked my doors I just parked and went to sleep. Eventually I started getting bad feelings like someone may end me one day during my trucking career if I wasn't careful even if I felt safe. One particular day I had a very bad feeling with hunting premonitions of some random person ending me so I locked my doors "which was unusual for me" and went to sleep at a truck stop in MO. I'm a very light sleeper and about 2 hours after going to sleep I woke up to a noise which sounded like my door handles was being pulled on. It was dark and I was like "😑... so tired wtf is going on...." I then heard a knock at the door I felt extremely uneasy so I only cracked the window to this African super dark skinned dude asking me for money and he told me he lived in the woods but looking into his eyes his eyes were super wide open and he had an extremely scary/crazy look on his face like he was ready to end me just to get anything off of me to survive. I didn't ask him why he messed with my door handles I just gave him a few snacks through the small crack I made in the window and told him to have a nice night and went back to sleep only imagining what may have happened to me if I failed to lock my doors that night. I really think he would have attacked me if he made it into my truck and I would have likely woken up while being attacked.
Only other dangerous situations besides man is wildlife meaning actual hyenas like right after I got into my truck while at a closed shipper there was a hyena like right next to the truck where I was just outside looking for information and I had no way to defend myself if it had attacked me while I was outside of the truck..... from that point on I always keep a lookout for dangerous wildlife anytime outside of the truck...... so many dangers of any kind can come out of nowhere at any moment.
