This sounds like one of those books that isn't fun to read but gets you thinking. That really changes my perspective on books sometimes. Great review!

Such an interesting video thank you for posting. My mum has started collecting Netsuke and I bought her a couple last Christmas so she might be interested in this book. Love your channel, enjoy your holiday :)

Not sure if I want to read the book or not, but you reminded me of an interesting thing that happened last year. While traveling in Colorado, I and my husband talked to a gentleman with an extensive collection of Netsuke. Prior to this meeting I didn't know anything about Netsuke. He allowed us to view his collection and it was very interesting and quite beautiful. He had built gorgeous exotic wood cabinets to display the Netsuke, so clearly he enjoys his collection! I have a fair interest in Japanese culture and history so was happy to see and learn about Netsuke. Thank you for your suggestion of listening to the audio version of the book. I love this community on BookTube :)

Thanks! Welcome Terri! So cool that you actually got to see them up close and personal and with a guide. Very lucky you were. I hope one day to get the chance to see one and to hold it in my hand...

I remember you mentioning this book, which sounded very interesting. I also thought it was going be about the journey of the netsuke throughout the family, but seeingthat was not the case. I will keep it in mind be an audible selection. Great review!

I'm sorry to hear that found this dry, It seems to have hindered you from loving it completely. I may read this if I can borrow it from somewhere. It seems to cover a plethora of topics.
It's interesting how you say that might've enjoyed this more as an audiobook. I was initially very skeptical of anything by Neil Gaiman but after hearing him read excerpts of his books and just talk about them passionately I felt really excited to pick them up and perhaps I wouldn't have enjoyed The Graveyard Book as much if I hadn't researched more about the author himself.
Anyway, great thorough review Didi :D

Books can be funny like that sometime. This doesn't happen that often to me, but it's happened twice. Amercian Gods (not at all my cup of tea) and this one. I'm usually a good judge of character concerning what I choose to read but I guess every now and then one can get a dud. I'm not going to let all of this get me down. I found Americanah, Oscar Wao, and Saga right? ;)

Definitely don't let it get you down! You seem to have a very good track record tbh :) I try to put the duds out of my mind as soon as I finish them.

I was getting spoiled with all the really good books I started the year with and then Americanah.

I do not understand the 'Bearing with me', comment at the end, a flawless review as always. Not sure if it is for me but I will check out youtube videos with author :D

It was interesting but I would have preferred the audiobook. If there is one.
