Identifying intermediate compounds in a phase diagram

Many phase diagrams feature intermediate compounds. These form because enthalpy (bonding)is favored over entropy (disorder). In this example of the Mg-Pb phase diagram we see the formation of a congruently melting intermediate compound. It essentially creates two binary eutectic diagrams.
