  • If your driving privileges are suspended, requiring you to obtain an SR22 Insurance Policy and Certificate, this video explains how you do it Quickly and Legally. While pricing and coverage requirements vary widely from State to State, the process remains relatively the same no matter where you live.
    SR22 Information Everybody Should Know...
    What is SR22 Insurance?
Most states will require you to show future financial responsibility by having SR22 insurance. SR-22 insurance can be purchased by a licensed insurance company in your state. The form shows the state that you have minimum liability limits for auto insurance. It is most often required after you get cited for driving without insurance, DUI or other major traffic violations.
Where do I get cheap SR22 insurance?
Cheap SR22 insurance is easy to find if you shop around for the best price. Be sure to let the company know you need an SR22 and any accidents or tickets you also have.
    Can I get an SR22 if I don’t own a car?
Yes, you can get SR22 insurance if you don’t own a car. Many people don’t own a car but are required to show financial responsibility to the state. Ask your insurance company for a Non-Owner SR22 insurance policy. This type of policy will provide you with the required liability coverage and is not tied to any one vehicle but any vehicle you drive.
How long is the SR22 valid?
In most states the SR22 is required for three years but can be up to 5 years depending on your court required suspension period. The required time period will be stated on your suspension paperwork. If you cancel your SR22 policy prior to the end of your suspension the state will suspend your license again.
How much does SR22 insurance cost?
The cost to add an SR-22 filing to your auto insurance is usually $25 to $50. This is only the cost to file the form with the state. Your largest cost associated with the SR22 is the underlying citation such as a DUI. Most insurance companies increase your auto premium substantially in the event you are convicted of a DUI or other major violation. Be sure to get SR22 quotes from multiple companies to compare prices.
What if I move to another state during my suspension?
If you are required to have an SR22 filed with your current residence state and you move you must continue to file with your previous state. Be sure to inform you insurance company of the new address but make sure that SR22 does not cancel. Not every state requires an SR22 filing so ask your insurance agent or company for details.
Can I switch insurance companies when I have an SR22?
Yes you can switch insurance companies during your required suspension period. If you find a lower rate at a different insurance company just make sure there is no lapse of coverage and the new company has all the SR22 filing information.
    Who needs an SR22?
If you have been arrested or convicted to one of the following you may be required to carry an SR22:
    1. Driving under the influence DUI, DWI, DWAI
    2. At fault in an accident while driving without insurance
    3. Multiple traffic offenses specific to your state
    4. Most any suspension related to a traffic violation
Is SR22 insurance valid in multiple states?
No, SR22 insurance is specific to the state which the violation occurred. If you plan to move to another state while your current state still requires the SR22 filing do not cancel the policy until you have transferred your insurance to the new state. Some states don’t require SR22 insurance but may have other requirements. Check with an insurance agent to see what the state requirements may be.
What is the difference between FR44 insurance and SR22 insurance?
Currently there are only two states that require FR44 insurance filings, Florida and Virginia. The FR44 is a proof of insurance certificate that requires the driver to have higher liability limits on the auto insurance policy due to a DUI. Driving under the influence in one of these states will result in much higher car insurance premiums and a three year period of filing an FR44 form. The cost of the filing is only $25-$50 but having the DUI on your driving record will cause the premiums to increase dramatically.

And the high prices don't help when everything to just get by is expensive....
      I had one speeding ticket.
And a separate incident that was largely due to poorly marked turns on dark country roads and no speed limit signs that said to slow for the turn. And by poorly marked I mean nothing at all.... Looked like a road going between some trees in the pitch black night turned out to be a pretty good sized ditch and a driveway that also looks like a road.
At one point it was either the trees, the clear path to a minor wreck or keep turning and flip as the car hit the mail box... ( I practice defensive driving on private property and know how my car acts in situations.) I know a friend that hit a mailbox in a jeep. Almost flipped it going half as fast in a straight line and my car was almost already lifting a wheel off the ground in a hard turn as I used the front wheel drive to try to avoid anything. Ended up in the clear spot and flew 10 or 15 feet bounced iver the driveway and came to rest with the car wedged in a ditch to where I could easily sit under it.

I had a DUI in Nevada 1989. I paid all fines in full, did all requirements by the court. Classes, lower court counseling, etc. etc.
I did everything except reinstate my drivers license. Now in 1996 I decided to become legal cause I was purchasing a car in my name. 7 years went by and I had to get a
SR-22. Three years it was done with and now 30 years later it’s far behind me. The reason I’m stating a comment is this. After reading several replies that you can not drive for 3 years then you won’t have to get a SR-22. I don’t think so. They said I could’ve waited 20 years and I still would’ve had to get SR-22. I’m living proof right hand to God.

Bull crap! You aren’t understanding the truth. If you are required to have an SR-22 for x amount of years you most definitely will need to get one regardless how many years or even decades has passed in order to get your driving privileges back. No two ways about bub.

@@dontellgucci1117 Wrong!! I had a 3 year requirement, I got the sr22 after 2 years 8 months. 4 months later the DMV TOLD me my deadline for 3 years has been met. So I dropped it and have had a valid DL ever since. Even just renewed it on my birthday when it was about to expire. FACT because I went through it and it DID happen. I got into a horrible car accident Oct. 2012. I was pronounced dead 3 times at the scene before having to be airlifted to a hospital they didn't think could handle injuries of my severity because they couldn't get me stable enough for long enough to for me the 10 or so minutes/53 miles away to a hospital that was better equipped for all the horrible injuries I had acquired. There I was in a coma for a month, on life support for 2 months, in ICU for 3 months and rehab another month for a grand total of 4 months in the hospital, in which time I couldn't pay my car note and there finance company had ABSOLUTELY NO problem repossessing my vehicle, knowing full well the reasoning behind my inability to pay..... Which I thought was pretty sorry since I had been paying on the car for the better part of 4 years and was NEVER EVEN LATE much less missed a payment.... I was a well early EVERY MONTH and was within a few months of paying out of and owning it.... But what I found even more than sorry but downright SHITTY was in all their kindness helping the dealership get their vehicle for the months of non-payment from the person who's mom the hospital was telling to go ahead and make her peace with her daughter cuz they didn't think she was gonna pull thru this horrific accident but that between ICU visits and trying to hold herself together the mother did Not Think To go get and turn in her daughter's tag..... And shame shame cuz since the mom didn't think to leave her daughter in a very critical time that she very well could have lost her child, the Wonderful DMV in Louisiana decided to flash the child's DL, which added with her time in the hospital turned into a suspended DL..... PS THANK YOU MOMMA... I LOVE YOU!! SO I REALLY DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH ANY OF THIS SHIT..... SO, this is what I've gained from that horrible accident..... I lost my 09' Roush Mustang for non-payment, (after well over 4 years of better than perfect payments), I can't pick up things I definitely should be able to because both of my arms were almost COMPLETELY SEVERED, (they were literally hanging by a lil piece of skin), I have sharp pains Everytime I cough, (not sure if this is the reason but sure it at least had something to do with it but broke every single rib except one), can hardly walk, (cuz need 2 hop replacements from breaking both hips and JUST CUZ THAT JUST DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH IN ANY WAY, I HAVE A SUSPENDED DL WITH A HEFTY FEE, WELL INTO THE THOUSANDS, TO HAVE IT REINSTATED..... AND SINCE I CAN'T WORK, I CAN'T PAY THE FINES.... SO HOW'S THAT FOR I GUESS YOU COULD SAY, INJUSTICE...? IDK FML!! VICIOUS ASS CIRCLE

Giving amnesty to something that shouldn't even be charged for in the first place. You can't turn a constitutionally protected right into a privilege. Which is why you need to Report your accidents to your state within 10 days of an incident and provide COMPLETE liability insurance information when doing so. Leaving out any part of that information can lead to a License Suspension.
Additionally, DO NOT rely on Law Enforcement or your Insurance Company to report your accidents for you as A) It is the driver's responsibility, not theirs, and B) their accident reports DO NOT satisfy most states' reporting requirements.
In other words, if you fail to report your own accidents, your state will NOT have any evidence that you were insured as a driver in the accident, leading to what would be an easily avoidable License Suspension and SR-22 requirement.

I actually have insurance, but I sometimes say I don't have insurance if I get into accident. I then get a notice from the DMV and my car us towed. I then go down to the tow yard and produce my insurance cards and DL and pay a $150 fine. I also visit the DMV and provide my card and pay a small fine. The total is usually about $250. I have many accidents so I have to do this so I don't get dropped. I have about 1 accident each 2 years! Paying the tickets and fines are better than paying SR-22. 🚘 👮‍♀️🚔

What I do now is rent/carshare my cars out to guests on Turo and get what's called "carsharing insurance". It's only like $80 month. The company is named ABI/Lula. I only host my car on Turo like 4 days a month- so I can get the cheap insurance and also make a few bucks. It's been a win/win, really! 💵

But if i were to get it at the time when im allowed a license i would need it for 3 years continuous right? Or would it be for 2 more years from then? Hi, thanks for any advice!
      I had a DUI ( Florida ), lost license 8/2020. Suspended 6 months.
I filed for a non owner FR 44 policy sometime late 2021, have had the policy no lapse since. Needed interlock 1 year.
Worked from my home, also take care of disabled Mother, no need to drive. So didn’t apply for license or install interlock. ( Don’t own car )
I believe the 3 years requirement may be up for SR44. But, never applied for license or got interlock.
I will go to apply for license, and get interlock installed in a friends car now.
Question is, if I’ve had the FR44 insurance 3 years - will that time count?
Or will I need to keep it for another 3 years after I reinstate license and put interlock in?
I know the “wait it out law” changed, but didn’t wait it out. Have had the FR44 3 years, just never got license reinstated or interlock installed - didn’t have anyone that would allow me to install one in their car until now.
      Thanks for any assistance!

They can't check that for me at the place that asks to have it sent to them or they suspend your license after 18 days. So if they don't have that on file what do they do with that information when they get it. Shouldn't that stay on file. Not that you should need that if your insurance is valid.

    • @FRSRExperts

I'm assuming your DUI happened in Oregon. Before the State will issue your driver's license, you'll have to purchase an SR22 (you seem to already know that). Whether or not Oregon will let you pass the test first, that could probably go either way. However, since you'll need the SR22 in order to get your license, and I would assume you want to get your license after passing the test, I would just go ahead and purchase the SR22 before taking my test. That way you should be able to leave the facility with license in hand.

Depending on which State you live in, the answer could be different. In most States, you'll get a 3 year requirement. Therefore, in your situation, you could have 2 years left on your SR22. However, it's only required if you want to drive. If you decide not to drive, you can wait the 3 years out and you'll never need an SR22. This is one of our most frequently asked questions. However, it would be like asking how much regular car insurance costs... there are too many variables to give an exact amount. Factors would include: Do you have an automobile you need to put on the policy? What does your driving record look like? Have you had prior convictions that required an SR22? Even down to what zip code you live in since certain locations are higher risk than others. To give you an average range, it could be from a few dollars a month up to over $100 per month. On the bright side, you can make monthly payments on an SR22.

They took my car this time and Even though the Sargent was a way cool guy, I did have to go to court. I believe my revocation was only 1year; meaning it's most likely done by now. Truth is, I've never fully obtained my license before as I grew up on a farm for the most part and yeah.. Anyways I am wondering exactly what i'll need to do to get a leg up and finally be on a path towards getting my license. No false hopes just a staircase thats climbable. Lifes getting pretty gloomy now as there isn't as much purpose, I don't even feel like a grown man anymore and i'm always so scared that i'll never be able to drive legally. Am not a criminal, just took a shortcut where I shouldn't have. Also my driving skill is like expert mode. Good at drifting n all that to ☺ Thank you for your video Mr. Expert. That's a great question. The answer is: Only if you want to operate a motor vehicle. You could conceivably go for 3 years without driving and your SR22 requirement would go away after that. However, since most people can't function without driving, you will probably want what's called a "Non-Owner SR22". This allows you to operate any motor vehicle not owned by you. These policies are also far cheaper than SR22's with vehicles attached.

Crashing into another car is fault of speed.. Too fast for conditions of road.. Failure to stop..loss of attention... Why you were issued permission to to drive is something. To investigate..... A better system would be pay at pump to cover accidental.. Insurance company only profits if it does not do what's there for
      Claims paid..
I've been in 2 accident both times a criminal act was committed, and a insurance company got to hide behide a little old lady of 85 who broke her back, lost her husband when their speeding car swerved did illegal lane change a flew off the freeway overpass onto my completely stopped car waiting for a light to change..... The worst insurance company... Seeking reputation to always take their offer... . Our difference was, $5k... They spent over$35k for expert witness (professional lier protected by "opinion" and trial lawyer... They admit guilt.. So the criminal act can't be used... And only the little 85 yrs old poor widow can be known.. Not a insurance company which forced me into court because dropping $30k wasn't good enough... It had to be their offer and only theirs.. And now.. I can't say anything about insurance jurriesbgive higher settlements out if the know an issurence company is to pay.. And it's bias against them.... Yet portraying a 21 yr old dragging a poor 85yr old woman who suffered with added pain of losing her husband... They read that in court.. But no
that's not going to sway a jury to lower amount...
Fuck insurance... That was states fault for allowing anyone over 65 to drive....

I lost mine for 90 days, paid the fine went back to get my license after ninety days, and they said I have to pay 500 more. But according to the judges sentence, I Was not to Drive only for 90 days. There is nothing in the paperwork requiring additional money. Nothing in the paperwork about With holding it any longer than, that time frame. And no other steps required for re -acquiring it.
I was only ordered to not drive for 90 days. Nothing else. Yes they did take my license physically, Only to hold not keep. Their words. Idaho.

Does a hardship license apply to 17 year olds? Thanks!

    • @FRSRExperts
      @FRSRExperts  Před 6 lety

It would apply to anybody with a suspended license that had a need to drive for employment, etc. while under that suspension. So yes, a 17 year old would need to apply for a hardship if their license was suspended and they had a valid reason for needing to operate a motor vehicle.

Whoops i may be thinking of the hardship license. Do you have any idea how that works?

    • @FRSRExperts
      @FRSRExperts  Před 6 lety

In many cases the State, and it depends on which State you're in, will assign you a Driver's License number to attach your suspension (for record keeping purposes) if you only have a permit. This will eventually become your actual Driver's License Number. Whether or not you can apply for a hardship license without a license to begin with... that is going to definitely depend upon your State laws. I wish I could give you a more definitive answer, but there are too many variables; i.e. State laws, reason for suspension, prior incidents, etc.
