    Yes Yes. I haven't listened to the full version of this since high school. There was this one odd Welsh kid, our English exchange student, who somehow managed to keep getting the best albums despite being on the US side of the Atlantic. His mates would go get all the latest hits, put them in a crate and send them over as a "gift package." We were all listening to Underworld, The Orb, Mr. Oizo, stuff like that despite being 3500 miles away from london.

    Not my first experience with the Orb or ambient (at the time, I already had the first album and Orbvs Terrarvm), but perhaps the greatest experience I had with the Orb was when I heard Blue Room out on the playa at the Black Rock Desert in 1996. I'm not sure which mix of the track it was, but this was back when Burning Man was still MILES OUT in the middle of the desert (sorry if you got on board after '96, you're no less cool but you did pay more to attend, only to be just a few miles from town - instead of closer to 15 - and it was much like being out on the moon).
    Anyway, even further from civilization yet was "Rave camp" - which was another mile further out - perched between the Jackson Mountains and whatever the range to the West was called. It was in the morning (after having been up all night on mushrooms) and I wandered over to rave camp and the DJ was playing Blue Room to an audience of ME. And I will never forget what it was like to experience the ambience of this track as (I could swear) I could hear the BASS bouncing off the nearest mountain to our West. It was the most incredible echo/acoustic effect, like something that couldn't be recreated in a club or studio. It needed this massive cathedral of desert floor and mountains to create it. At first, I stood between the speakers that had been set up but then I walked towards that one mountain because of the echo that was created. It gave the music such dimension and scale. It was something I never experienced before or since.

      @samnelson2343 Před 2 lety +4

      If you see this, amazing.
      I had a similar experience at a free party in deepest england (stratford) we'd been driving around country roads for what seemed like hours when i saw in a field a sheep stood on top of a mini cooper and said "its there!" We let ourselves into the field and followed the tire tracks. Couldnt hear any music but was sure that we were there. Thru another field and we found rows and rows of parked cars. Still couldn't hear the music but knew we were in the right place. Ditched the car dropped a load of things and set off....
      As we rounded a fold in the landscape we could suddenly hear the beautiful bass and see the steam rising off of the dancers. The speakers were set out in a semi circle in a natural ampitheatre so that almost all of the sound was snuggled into the dancers. We joined in and raved like mad for hours.
      I eventually took a break and climbed up the slope to join the peeps sitting, chilling and watching the show, rolled a j and suddenly thought 'oh, the treble has dropped out. I stumbled down the slope to tell the sound guy and he checked and said "yes, the treble has dropped out, cheers mate". .he plugged it back in just as a remix of prodigy's fiirestarter dropped. The combination of the wicked mix and the treble suddenly coming back on had an electric effect....all the peeps who'd been chilling on the slopes just jumped up and stormed back into the dance as of they had puppet strings or else had been electrified.
      Happy memory.

      I was referring more or less on quantity basis. Future single releases often had the shorter 7-minute combined with others. I'm sure it's been more available around in the UK, but it has never been available in the US, where I am from. Which is a big shame. After having this on my list for a long while, I prefer this over the other two shorter ones.

      @@interesting_output Original release of the full 40 minutes was on the first American edition CD in 1992 on Mercury which had a bonus disc .. also came out in America on the stand alone Blue Room CD EP in 1992 which is the same as the bonus disc .. not reissued in any way since 1994 it's not even on the deluxe 20th anniversary edition of U.F.Orb so it's fair to say it is rare.

    If you want to know why this track is 39.57 long, its because UK singles had to be under 40 minutes to enter the UK singles charts, so they thought they would release the longest track they could. It got to number 8 in the charts.
