Some canals see massive cargo ships coming through day in and day out while others help lovers get to know a city as they ride through on a gondola. But no matter the size, every canal has an important role to play. But no two are alike, and while some may be big, some are even bigger! I love it. Being first generation Dutch and have been back to the Netherlands and 9 other Countries with my Father who was Bourne in 1919 in 1991 I actually live 200 feet from Iragation canal in Utah and work for a local government Water department that provides canal and Potable water. It's in our blood . Put a Dutchman in a Desert we will find or build a Canal.😁

Major omission: The St.Lawrence Seaway which allows ocean vessels to access the Great Lakes.
Welland canal.
It's not really a canal as it is more regulating depth of a river for navigation purposes. You are right in that it is an important waterway for commerce around the Great Lakes but the "Lakers" cargo ships you see on those lakes are not ocean vessels.
@@jaquigreenlees Quite correct about the Lakers, but ocean ships could not navigate the Lachine Canal near Montréal . The construction of the St.Lawrence Seaway, a canal which does have locks to lift the ships up to the level of Lake Ontario opened the Great Lakes to ocean vessels. The Welland Canal was previously enlarged to accommodate the largest Lakers and this suited the Ocean ships. The Welland canal and locks lift ships up to Lake Erie. Today , outside of the winter freeze, Ocean ships can be seen loading grain at Thunder Bay on Lake Superior.
@@jaquigreenlees ocean going ships can and do travel to the upper lakes including Chicago. The fact is a ship can go a good chunk of the way across the continent.
And the Welland is the key since Niagara Falls basically trapped the ships to Buffalo and going to small ships on the Erie or onto railroads to NY or Montreal

There's a lot of basic errors in this: Examples? 1) Corinth is far from the deepest canal (26ft) in the world. Panama is around 55ft and Suez is 70ft. 2) Panama Canal doesn't have locks because the Caribbean and Pacific have different levels. Its to reduce the need to excavate and reach the level of the Gatun Lake in the middle.3) The Main-Donau Kanal doesn't go via the Atlantic Ocean! Its a shame, I like these videos.

Leeds liverpool canal was started in constructed 1770 not 1966.
This was very educational to me. Those canals were very thin. I look to me that the ship can easily get stuck. Like to see more fascinating stuff like this👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽

Although not a canal but a series of canals connecting rivers and sounds, The ICW along the Atlantic seaboard stretches from Key West to Boston . Over 4000km + although it's not deep enough for big ships, many tug and barge traffic as well as other vessels use this waterway. It is perhaps the most travelled waterway in volume of vessels in the eastern US..
..it is true and very well known for sure.. but I thought here we are talking about "canals"
@@nicolasbouyiouclis4726 yes but the waterway is connected by a series of multiple canals.. Perhaps hundreds that range from a few km to hundreds. It's these canals that connect with various rivers and sounds to create thousands of km of inland waterway. Although the commercial usage of this waterway is limited to barge traffic due to its limited depth. It still is the dominant means for coal transport to power stations throughout.

I wanted to see the Canal du Midi in France ! Unesco protected, very scenic, and in one part the canal goes on a bridge above a river! Amazing feat of engineering
Julius Caesar, among others, first saw the need for and the potential of a canal crossing the isthmus at Corinth but, despite Roman engineering being outstanding of its day (and even today), they didn't have the technology to create it at that time.
I was hoping to see the Cape Cod Canal, that made the NY to Boston voyage much safer.

@@satishbhakuni At 14.25 states " town of Yorkshire " Yorkshire is NOT a town , it is a northern English county . At 14.33 states " public meeting was held in 1966 ". That's only about 200 years after the event !

What happened to the Great lakes St Lawrence seaway? A system that can get a 740 foot ship 1000 miles inland
The locks and some rather short canals are man made, the rest is pretty much natural
@@francoisdvanderwesthuizen6772 the Welland Canal rises 321 feet with 8 locks and is over 50km. It is equal to half the ones in this video but it is part of the St Lawrence share. And the locks in the St Lawrence were no less amazing than some on this list.
But the Welland is the key and the first version of it was dug in the 1850s...

It's an entertaining video but don't go making travel arrangements or sitting a geography exam, based on what you learn here, okay? For the record @14:19 you'll hear - "The town of Yorkshire was seeing exponential growth." Well forget that because we've a City called York and it's in the County of Yorkshire.
Potentially one of the most dangerous canals in the world is a little short one: the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Why dangerous? If for any reason people ever stop maintaining this thing, it would have the minor effect of allowing a lot of biological contamination between the Mississippi River drainage and the Great Lakes. The major effect that it could have would be causing the Illinois River to pirate Lake Michigan-Huron. Keep those locks in good working order, folks!

Ahhhhhh! How could you leave out the Hiram Chittenden locks in Seattle, Washington? It is historically much more important than most of these canals on your list. You should be ashamed for leaving it out!

Very thin on rellevant information and in some cases totally wrong. The Panama is NOT 10,000 times shorter than the sea route (Cape Horn) but SAVES APPROX 10,000 MILES, the Suez was ORIGINALLY built by the Pharohs, the Corinth by the Ancient Greeks and Stalin`s White sea canal was constructed too shallow to be of any practical use and served only to kill thousands of POLITICAL Prisoners. More careful research needed, try telling us about projected and meaningful future (and large enough and therefore relevant to large Maritime Vessels) schemes. You got a like anyway, but even large barges are NOT ships!
irony of telling someone to do their research. suez(red sea to mediterranean sea) was not built by the pharaohs. ancient eygpt had a canal from the nile to the bitter lakes but dont know the exact time period. actually further south there is evidence of boats being disassembled and transported to the red sea. the greeks did not build the corinth canal they had a portage(drag the ship over land) the romans tried but barely made a dent. you can tell from the images that explosives would have been used else if actually done by hand this would be a well known project like the pyramids based on how big and long the canal is.
But its wrong that the locks of the Panama channel are built because of the different levels of Atlantic and Pacific. In the middle of the canal lies the gatun lake, which lies 26 +- higher than the Pacific or Atlantic and is source for the working of the locks.
