I always loved that Jack does try to just leave. I especially really like how it takes him a while to attempt to leave, given that in this situation it’d be hard to decide what you really want to do. I think the fact that Jack decides not to fight and only lays into Bobby when he feels forced to is a fantastic detail.

In my experience as a parent of two teens, bullying is much less of a problem for my kids than it was for me, and I was bullied so I've asked around and looked for all the warning signs. They are 13 and 15 now. (Girls bully verbally, as we all know.)
Even in the 90s, it was _much_ better than it was with my parents, according to their stories from the 60s. So we have made progress. The zero-tolerance policy has really helped. But I live in Canada so the policy may be different here.

I was a victim of bullying too. My bully squashed a tomato into my hair. A TOMATO! That was one of the things he did. Endlessly calling me names. Throwing stones at my front door. Bullies DO NOT bully people because of their own problems. They bully people because they LIKE IT! Kids have killed themselves because of bullies. Parents of victims should be able to call the police and media to bring attention to the problem of bullying. And teachers should NEVER sweep this issue under the rug using a 'Kids will be kids' attitude. Teachers MUST deal with the problem to bring it to a swift end. And finally parents of bullies need to be told what their children are doing so that they can punish them the right way.

I have never been a big man. When I was in high school at the age of 15 I was about 5'4" tall. My two best buddies were also small, one 5'4" and the other 5'2" and around 90 pounds. We were constantly terrorized and threatened by a bully who was well over 6' and easily 250 pounds. We were not the only subjects of his attentions but we were his favourites. He was a linebacker on the school football team so to some he was a hero. All three of us took automotives with this fellow and he took great delight in backing us into corners and slapping us around when the instructors couldn't see what was going on.
One day he had one of my friends trapped between a wall, a large steel workbench with a vise on it, and a row of shelving for parts. He stood there towering over my buddy with his hand raised ready to cuff him. My other buddy and I were behind him telling him to let him go but he just laughed. He reached out to slap my friend and I decided enough was enough. I had noticed that his left hand was resting on the bench vise with his fingers between the jaws. I went forward as quickly as I could and tightened the vise on his fingers. He tried to pull his fingers out and couldn't and he turned to slap me but the bench blocked him and he couldn't hit me. My friend escaped from where he was trapped. That big bastard couldn't reach the vise handle with his right hand because he was just too big. My friends and I stood there for a moment and then each of us took a turn darting in and tightening that vise even tighter. I won't say who it was but the final turn broke everyone of his fingers and two of his fingertips burst and started to bleed. We took off to another shop area and left him there until someone else found him passed out from the pain.
We were accused but we stood together and no one else came forth as a witness to what we had done so we walked. As for him, well his football career was finished, his hand was in a cast for the next year I'm told. His parents made arrangements for him to go to a different school in another district so we never saw him again. Was it worth it? To us it was. Do I regret it? Not one bit. You see, for the remainder of our high school years, no one ever came at us again. Though there was no proof other than that bullies say so, everyone knew if you fu*ked with us we just might find a way to even the score.
One of the ironies of life was that the smallest of us joined the Army when we graduated and stayed in as a lifer. He reached the rank of drill sergeant and his specialty was training new volunteers in boot camp the fine art of hand to hand combat. 5'6", 120 pounds, and he could kill you with one hand without breaking a sweat. He died a few years ago, an honoured and decorated veteran.

This was my childhood. Had to fight a dozen times a year from the age of 5 til I was 17 because I've always been small and "nice", a bit antisocial, and relentlessly bullied. This scene is how it actually goes down. And how to deal with a bully perfectly. It ain't about size, speed, number of opponents, any of that... Raw aggression is all that matters. That bully pushes you to make a show in front of his friends, you immediately hit him with blazing speed repeatedly in sensitive spot after sensitive spot until he goes down. Then keep hitting him. Then the teachers get involved and break it up, and you get a "reputation" for being a crazy fucker, and hopefully don't have to fight anyone again for awhile. Because violence sucks. It's sad and pointless, unless you have a damn good reason to do it. I don't care for this new "zero tolerence" policy on all violence, including self defense in schools nowadays. Sometimes people need to learn a good, hard lesson in a very visible way

I think it's wise to always be vigilant and trust your intuition, which will do a lot to keep you out of situations like that. I have had people try to jump me for revenge later on, and it didn't work out for them. Honestly, everyone should get some basic self defense training that's focused not on "winning" but fighting out of an ambush and escaping. He never bothered me again. And guess who got in trouble? Me. The principal berated me something fierce, sent me home and I had a week of lunch detention. My parents grounded me for like a month. Every bit of shame and anger I have inside me from being bullied as a teenager comes rushing forth when I watched this. Tears in my eyes, I wish just once I could have done this to a couple MF's that made my life miserable. Still haunts me to this day and I'm almost 60 years old. Pieces of shit, it hurts so bad inside sometimes, I hate myself for taking it. I never want to make someone feel like that... ever.

      Thats a Bummer..
Sometimes bullies can push you beyond endurance.i am 82 now but I still think back to school in 1955 when the school bully decided it was my turn to suffer ( he did boxing ) in desperation I picked up a half brick and decided there and then I would hit him in he face with it .Well he took off like a scalded cat and I could not catch him .No more probs after that .But I still had the thought in a straight forreward fight I would have had no chance with him .

Some of my school bullies ended up with loads of children and judging by their facebook profiles are now chamois leather faced grand mothers now.

There is no reason to hate yourself for being the bigger person, for keeping your principles and cool despite everything thrown at you. That is far from weak, that is strong as FUCK. I don’t know you, but I’m proud that you made it and that you didn’t let them bring you to their level. You are forty times stronger than any of those pussy-ass bullies. I wish you relief from all the pain you suffered someday

Was bullied hard growing up myself, and has morphed me into a person who is able to stand up for myself and others, I learned to not give a shit unless it really matters.
I say thank you to the bullies. It morphed me into the man i am today and i feel great. 👍
