- Watch Evangelical Steven Pynakker interview Jonathan Neville. In this episode we discuss the "Heartland Model" of Book of Mormon events. Over the last century the Meso-American model has been the dominate narrative regarding where events of the Book of Mormon took place. Now a new movement is gaining momentum that advocates for what many of the early Saints and church leaders thought about where these events occurred. This, is what I hope, will become an on going conversation amongst all the different viewpoints of this issue. I welcome advocates of other models to approach me and make a proposal to come on and be interviewed as well.

My feedback letter to Jonathan Neville: I just finished watching your interview with Steven Pynakker. Wow! Here is an Evangelical more versed in our Church's history than our very own scholars! Here is a person willing to have an open mind and heart to listen to another point of view! How sad it is that our own Church scholars cannot follow that example! I am speechless. This man is amazing! It was truly refreshing! Steven is an example of how ALL genuine "scholars" SHOULD behave: respectful, knowledgeable of the subject matter from all angles, genuine, open, and--perhaps most importantly--INTELLIGENT! There was NO animosity or displays of one up manship. Please let us know when part 2 is available. I found the exchange inspiring and hopeful on MANY different levels.

Looking at Alma 22 its impossible for the Lands of Zarahemla and Nephi to be in the Heartland. Zarahemla and Nephi are described as surrounded by water, it would take a few days driving to get to any heartland site from the west cost where i live. You can get on top of any volcano in Guatemala and see the Atlantic on one side and Pacific on the other.
We (Mormon Types) need more of this kind of conversation. Rick Bennett is doing an awesome job over on Gospel Tangents. All y’all need to keep up the courageous and great work I’m building strengthening the body of Christ.

Great interview! I am looking forward to having you co-host with me having Jonathan on my show too. All voices need to be heard and compared and contrasted. This idea just rings to me and is what I am striving for also. Lifting up all of humanity through our differences and recognizing respect with those and our similarities. I can't think of a better more humane way to learn and grow together.

I agree the Hill Camorah and final Nephite battles were in New York.
But the overwhelming evidence points to Zarahemla being in central America.
The Book of Mormon makes 0 mention of cold weather forcing the Lamanites to wear more clothing from November to April. A huge chunk of the year.
I agree, the only problem I see is with the Lamanites accepting the Gospel. The other geographical models seem to better fit the prophecy that the Lamanites will “Blossom like a rose.”
Think of it this way: The Lamanites had plenty of time to migrate and recentralize their various nations across the Western Hemisphere. I would also add that there are many members of the Church who are of North American tribes; they tend to get overlooked, which is unfortunate.

There are probably several other layers in the hierarchy of truth that precede the truth regarding the geographic setting of the Book of Mormon. But once we start to examine matters related to Book of Mormon geography, doesn't it make sense for us to acknowledge another crucial fact: we don't know exactly where it all happened, we just know that it happened. That seems to be a good starting point. Why can't we start with that acknowledgment, and then start with the text itself and primary sources from Joseph Smith?

My hunch is that much or most of the action of the Book of Mormon took place in North America, but I think that the best and most moderate approach to the question of Book of Mormon geography would be to begin with the text itself, with Joseph Smith's original statements and primary sources, and the kind of curiosity that is open to following the truth wherever it leads, all the while taking seriously the best scholarship on all sides of the topic.
Moderate? You mean boring and more aligned with biased establishment hack pseudointellectuals.

This was a great interview with one of the church's true "Scholars". He would never call himself that, but he's one the Brightest people around who is knocking down many of the false traditions that members hold dear and have trouble giving up.His main point is , go back to what the scriptures and the prophets have said and you will find the answers!
When I see the variety of theories and arguments about Book of Mormon geography and how ardently some people defend one model or another, it makes me wonder what surprises God might have in store for all of us. To be clear, I think that the question of Book of Mormon geography is an important and an interesting question, and my current opinion is that importance of the question is connected to the overarching and undergirding message of the Book of Mormon, a message that comes as a voice from the dust from at least two major civilizations that rose and fell. But someone needs to write a book on this topic that takes the best of research and scholarship on every side of the question in order to follow the truth wherever it leads.
I enjoyed Neville's book "Moroni's America" and a North American setting for the Book of Mormon makes a lot of sense to me, particularly if we start with just the text of the Book of Mormon and primary sources from Joseph Smith. But why can't we approach this topic with a hierarchy of truth in mind and more curiosity and inquisitiveness. In other words, Book of Mormon geography, as interesting and important as it is, is so much less interesting and important than the fact that the Book of Mormon is true, that it was translated by the gift and power of God, and that it is another testament of Jesus Christ.
No one is disputing that.

Jonathan Neville is not an honest scholar or human being. Not only did he run a cancer operation in Mexico by injecting people with urine, he has come against the apostles multiple times (his most famous as of late is criticizing Elder Gong as being misled by scholars and correlated Church History approved by the First Presidency), and in doing so, marks himself as a critic of the church.
Plus, his map requires a great deal of mental gymnastics to work - wilderness has to mean water except when it doesn't, there are multiple sea wests that are all east of Zarahemla, and instead of being north of everything, Cumorah is east of everything.
There's a blog called Neville Neville Land. It engages with his worldview and ideas, and I recommend everyone check it out.
