    Found this rig rundown because I was one of the host monitor tech at the venue they played last night in Victoria, BC. Their techs were the nicest guys, and most relaxed pros out of Nashville, some of whom also go on the road with Neil Young. This venue in Vic can be a nightmare for bands. I'm talking a about a church hall with 7.2 sec of reverb decay! Yet this band was so tight, so groovy, and so spacious, everything crystal clear and massive tone... This is a show I will always remember. So grateful to have been there.

    I played in a band with Stuart years ago and can say he's one of the most humble, talented, knowledgeable and creative guitarists I've ever met, and a really nice guy to boot. I learned so much from listening and watching him. Imagine an artist that mixes his own paint and threads his own brushes, that's Stu. Watching a "label guy" lean on the neck of one of his vintage babies, I think it was a Supro, was one of my most painful moments, but with typical grace he was asked nicely to stop. So glad he's still out there making it happen and any artist would be lucky to have him in their band.

      My dad played with Stu in Alaska in the 70's, and consequently I had the privilege of staying with him a few years back as well as seeing him whenever he's around my parts with Lucinda or The Wallflowers. Dude is one of the nicest, kindest, most down to earth dudes I've ever met. Also he's a goddamn monster guitarist, but there's tons of good guitarists that aren't great people. He also has a wonderful family. Much love to that dude and his music, amongst everything else. But goddamn that SG tone. Legendary.

    Stuart Mathis' performance with Jewel back then in 2001 on the song Standing Still with that National (I think) vintage guitar was epic. I remember, as guitar player too, how cool the guy was and what incredible sound and guitar arrangements he gave to the song... at least live as I don't know if he played on the record. I you like him as a guitarist just check it; there are a couple of videos here in YT of that song played live. I remember seeing him later on with The Wallflowers but the image I had on that performance live with Jewel was unforgettable. He's a great artist for sure.

    I saw them for 2 shows at a really tiny place this week. For the first show, I was about 3 people back from the stage in front of Mathis. For the second show, I was up against the left side of the stage. Cool experience. Seen them a lot in bigger places, places with really acoustics, and now a really small place. I can't think of a better band. They wail. Their sound is great. I think the crowd is always a bit subdued, at least in the Boston area. They are Lucinda fans from way back and don't expect a band that plays out like they do. On the one hand, I wish I could see them in front of (I hate to say this) a Dead crowd that lets the music take them and then gives it back to the band. I want to see these guys grab the audience and then feed off the audience giving it back to them. I want to see Stuart react to crowds just going nuts as he plays.
    But then again, if they jam band fans ever picked up on these guys, things would change. I think Lucinda likes playing in small, small places and if the jam band fans picked up on them, that might end.

    That's a "speed bump" pick up on the old Kay Speed Demon bass - one of Dearmond's less known, but highly regarded 1960's pick ups. The guitar "speed bumps" sell for $125 on Ebay - I have never priced a bass one.

      Out of curiosity, co you know of any difference between the guitar and bass pickups? I know a dew companies (eg; Danelectro) would use the same pickups in any model instrument.

    The Rig Rundown viewers are some of the most harsh critics towards their hosts. OUCH! As far as touching other peoples instruments, in this context I think its ok but I would opt out if given the option. This dude it just trying to be funny and entertaining. I think the problem is that guitar nerds just want the goods and the info and not the "show host". People liked Dirks because she was hot and didn't say a whole lot...

    • @TimBrannen
      @TimBrannen Před 9 lety +9

      I think John Bohlinger does a great job with Rig Rundowns while adding a little "hosting" excitement. He is a guitar guy, though, and I feel has a level of reverence toward the gear, both vintage and not-so-vintage. I bet Pete Thorn would be great at doing Rig Rundowns also.
