Licence is the British spelling... Brocolli had originally called this film Licence Revoked, but he changed it because he didn't think Americans would understand the word "revoked". This ultimately led to poor advertising, as the film's title was essentially changed at the last minute. Licence To Kill is still the lowest grossing Bond film of all time... Unfortunately, Dalton was not appreciated as Bond in his time, as audiences were more used to Roger Moore's style... I'm glad that Dalton has come back into favor over these recent years
This is unapologetically one of my favorite bond movies. It's an underrated gem in the bond franchise and I think there's a lot of people who wish Dalton had more movies. He was awesome in the role.

Dalton was under contract to make 4 Bonds between 1987-1993, but the films got tied-up in legal issues. They usually pumped them out every two years, but Dalton couldn’t wait around so went and got different acting jobs. By the time they were ready to go 5 years later, Dalton was busy with something else, so they got Brosnan instead. Who knows what Bonds we missed out in ‘91 and ‘93.
@@DeanStrickson Goldeneye was written with Dalton in mind but because of the delays due to legal issues preventing Bond films from being produced for newly 5 years Dalton was ready to move on to other projects and didn’t want to commit another contract to do more films after Goldeneye as was 48 years old by then and resigned from the role in 1994 while working on a miniseries. Pierce Brosnan took over the role officially.
As much as i love Bond movies, growing up watching them all from the start, it seems like these days they're not distinct enough. Casting daniel craig and pushing the body and action scenes into centre was just bad. Jason Bourne ? James Bond originally was just a man's man, didn't need to look like a professional mountain climber with 10% body fat. But today Bond is just nothing like back in the 60's and 70's.

The stiff competition from bourne and mission impossible, compounded with MGM blowing away all its profits from the bond films into casinos nearly leading the company to bankruptcy, made it all the more difficult for bond movies to be released on a regular basis. Hence, the skyfall and NTTD delays Thank God Amazon owns MGM now. The bourne series is in irrelevancy now, and mission impossiblewont last after tom cruise calls it quits.. Also, Money management will be done infinitely better now and then we will have a bond film every 3 years ❤
Had a crush on Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto when watching this movie back in the day😃 It’s sad that this was the last time we see Dalton as Bond. I wished he stayed for one more before retiring the role.
Too bad that audiences were so used to the streamlined version from all the previous movies, that they didn't appreciate how faithful to the original idea this movie was.

yes Jen Murray is the best on these BOND films, This one was grittier than most and a real good perf by Robert Davi as the cartel bad guy. btw While Carey Lowell wore a wig for the scenes set in the United States, a scene where Bouvier cuts her hair was added so Lowell's natural short hair could be used. SHe is stunning and was a long time co star of NBC Law & Order and so gorgeous as 5ft 10 beauty on tv's longest running Crime/ Law show

@@js0988 How dramatic. Goldeneye is one of the best movies in the series, contender for the best and the rest of the Brosnan movies save for the last one are good. I never once bought Daniel Craig as James Bond though. The first movie everyone raves about i thought was meh, it kept getting more meh until the couple final entries where they are absolutely terrible movies full of "current year media" tripe.
This movie used parts of the Live and Let Die novel that wasn't used previously. The producers happened to bump into David Hedison who had played Felix Leiter in Live and Let Die and thought he was still able enough to play the role. During the scene when they parachute to the church there were two takes, the first one is the one you see in the movie. The second take, the director wanted them to land a little faster, David's leg bent and was injured and limped the rest of the movie. He had issues with that leg the rest of his life. Our family was good friends with David Hedison and would met up with him at conventions. I have a couple of interviews I filmed with him on my VT channel and I ran his website for several years.
Both of the FBI agents from the first Die Hard are in this movie. Robert Davi (Sanchez) and Grand L Bush (Agent Hawkins, the guy who tells Bond to "let it go")
I absolutely love the scene where Q is waiting out on the street in disguise. The cars drive by and he uses a radio built in to a broom. Once he's done, after years of complaining that Bond never brings any equipment back, he just dumps his equipment in a bush and walks away.
Sanchez is an awesome villain. Menacing and sadistic but also feels real and grounded. Dalton and Robert Davi have great chemistry. Must be the only Bond movie where the villain actually wants to be pals with Bond.
Timothy Dalton gives Bond some real vulnerability and emotion compared to the previous actors, it really is a huge shame they couldn't get him started sooner. I think Pierce Brosnan still has a bit of Dalton's edge in the upcoming GoldenEye, which I'm sure you're going to love, filled with great villains. Also, the music for Licence to Kill is by Michael Kamen! He's done a ton of awesome soundtracks including the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard franchises. He also worked with Queen on Highlander, which I definitely think is a movie you'd enjoy. Sean Connery is also in that

The first was on her majesty’s secret service but he thought and was correct about it that he was too young to play a veteran agent and the second was for your eyes only which REALLY should’ve been his first and he could’ve carried the franchise in the 80s but they wanted to stay with the formula that by the 80s and Moore as bond was becoming increasingly and obviously passé he declined again for that reason and that he wanted to make his bond his own he almost didn’t get it because he was busy and pierce was going to take it but he got a contract renewal for a tv series he was working on and then the role was open for dalton to take
I remember being so frustrated when this one came out because it had a 15 certificate in the UK and I was 11 at the time. My older sister was particularly obnoxious about it as she was old enough to beat the age limit. 18:13 Love how Dalton’s accent slips here. There is a similar slip in Flash Gordon, again involving the word “bloody”.
This was my first Bond film at the cinema I was 10 years old when this came out in 1989 and I'm in the U.K. My Father took my older brother who was 13 years old at the time and me to see it, but we didn't know it was a 15 Certificate until we arrived at the cinema which was about 25 miles from home (the closest cinema to us at the time). My Father got the tickets and we just walked in with a crowd of people with me as far from the usher's view as possible trying not to be noticed as here in the U.K. you have to be the age of the film certificate to gain entry, unlike the U.S. where a parent or someone of age can take you in even if you are not of age.
Ha, I felt exactly the same. I was 7 (unbelievable that I was so into Bond that young, I saw loads taped off daytime TV which must've been heavily edited for violence), I was gutted I couldn't go and watch this at the cinema. Had to wait til I was about 12 or 13 before I persuaded my parents (well, my dad) to watch it first on VHS to check it wasn't too gory. Used to scare the hell out of me as a kid, Davi was genuinely utterly menacing in the role of Sanchez. Watching it now, I also appreciate Zerb's performance as Krest, just really good at conveying a guy with serious anxiety and drink problems who also happens to be a total slimeball psycho.
I took the love of my life to see this at The Odeon, Marble Arch, a couple of days after its premiere in June 1989. We were teenagers and it was our first real date. She is currently poking me in the back and quoting lines from this film. We have been very happily married for 32 years, and are both huge Bond fans.
To the best of my knowledge, with Dalton they tried to go back to the character of Bond from the books, make him darker and with more of an emotional edge, so to speak, and I liked his two films a lot. This one is one of my favorites for sure, and Robert Davi brought a sinister and deadly edge to his villian which I found very effective along with Benicio Del Toro as his henchman. It's a shame we didn't get more with Dalton but very glad that we have these two and at least he brought something different to the franchise much as his predecessors did. Great reaction!
Timothy Dalton is my personal favorite Bond. He was way ahead of his time in his portrayal of the character. He did what Daniel Craig did, but fifteen years earlier, with his darker more tormented and more realistic version of Bond. Unfortunately I don't think audiences were really ready for a Bond like that, especially right off the back of Roger Moore, which is why I think he only got the two movies :(
The score was composed and conducted by the late Michael Kamen, as John Barry was in the hospital after he ruptured his esophagus and had to drop out. Kamen did music for the LETHAL WEAPON and DIE HARD movies, as both film franchises share the same bombastic action theme.

I adore License to Kill. Easily top 5 in my Bond rankings, and hands down my favorite Bond girl. Pam Bouvier 😍 When she shows up with a new haircut 🤩 Concerning the ending theme - 'If you ask me to' feels like a statement from Bond to Bouvier. If she asked, he would leave everything for her. Due to this interpretation, it's my favorite Bond 'love theme'. And Patti Labelle crushes it. Celine's version is a pale imitator.
Weird fun fact - during the climax, there is a moment where the impact of bullets lands to the James Bond theme rhythm. Just a great little bit of sneaky foley work.
Underrated Bond. Underrated villain. Underrated Bond girl. This movie is just awesome! Fun Fact: the singer doing the Bond theme was a gentle Christian woman who was very uncomfortable singing the lines "I've Got A License to Kill". She just thought that sweet song was too gratuitous.

The song didn’t fit the tone of the movie anyway. You’ve got maybe the grittiest Bond film ever until Quantum of Solace and a soul ballad singer from the 70s and 80s singing that kind of theme song. The whole movie seems like they had an idea, and then wimped out. They got so gritty and dark that they felt they needed ridiculous comic relief out of nowhere. Desmond as Q has always hated being in the field. Now he’s goofing off and handing Dalton wacky packages and silly gadgets that would better suit a Roger Moore movie. It was Bond trying to be too much like an American TV movie. I like what they were trying to do, and the villain is great, but did we really see Felix as Bond’s close friend? He’s an ally, but friend? That came out of nowhere. We’ve never seen to that point Bond and Leiter in a social, relaxed situation. We’ve only seen them on the job. And the actor they picked was from Live and Let Die. So there’s no connection to Dalton and for younger fans, no connection to Bond at all.
@@christhornycroft3686in the novels bond and Felix are extremely close, i mean not that they see each other all the time but when they do they catch up on the good times. Plus this had elements from the novel live and let die so while it might not look like a bond film it definitely felt like one. the violence in the novels is just horrific as the movie and bond does get hurt and scarred a lot. I agree on the actor playing Felix being the same one as in the movie live and let die not making any sense because young fans aren’t gonna really make the connection.

The Patti LaBelle song is one of my favorite ending credit songs in the series. I saw this just before visiting Salem Massachusetts in October 2019 during Halloween time and that song always reminds me of that trip. Celine Dion 🇨🇦 also did a cover of it! 🙂🎶
I love "If You Asked Me". Such an underrated song, both for Patti LaBelle, and James Bond. Unfortunately, nowadays, most people think of Celine Dion since her cover ended up being more popular.
Timothy Dalton is actually my favorite Bond. This movie is also my favorite Bond film. The last Bond film that didn't take itself too serious. It had adventure, action and most importantly humor. Every Bond film since then has become more and more serious and less fun.

Oh . In the florida house with the cats. Bond says ( it's a farewell to arms ) funny that is Ernest hemmingways house and he wrote a famous book called ( a farewell to arms ) hemmingway left the house to his cats and turned it into a cat sanctuary. .. ( edit ) ha noticed.
At this point in the series this was the first time an actor had played Felix Leiter more than once, even though David Hedison last played him in Live and Let Die and John Terry had played him in between. Also, Felix losing his leg to the shark and the note on his body are straight out of the novel Live and Let Die. In the book series Felix has a wooden leg and a hook for a hand every time he appears after.
Probably the most violent and darkest bond ever ;) And I don't know if you realized but Felix Leiter was the recurring character from the whole serie since "Dr No", it was even the same actor who played him in "Live and let die" ^^ Sanchez is one of my ALL time favorite bond vilain : He's scary, sadist, dangerous and one of the most realistic vilain in the bond franchise. I wish we've had more vilains like him in bond movies :(
For a different film with Timothy Dalton, I recommend The Rocketeer. He plays a swashbuckling movie star in the late 1930s. It was made not long after this movie. It comes from a time when Disney took more risks.
OK Jen, you wanted to hear my Timothy Dalton story, so here it is. You mentioned that you were once a banquet server, me as well. I got my start at a Fairmont hotel in Denver. There, I had encountered many celebrities, heads of state, and lots of rich and powerful people. Let's just say, I had gotten training there that served me well. Eventually I moved to Key West Florida. I was, hired to work in a five star gourmet restaurant called Henry's at a resort called the Casa Marina. Alot of the filming for License to Kill was in Key West. Opon the completion of the film, they had a cast party and dinner at the restaurant where I worked. I met the entire cast of the film, Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, and so on. Once the dinner was over, MR. Dalton asked me if I would like to join the party on the resorts grounds. Of course I said yes. Most people with fame come in two types, very nice, humble and gracious, or they are just so into themselves, they view everyone else as beneath them. Timothy Dalton is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I have had many memorable personal experiences with famous people. There's only one encounter that tops the interaction I had with MR. Dalton, and that would be the time I had dinner with James Stewart. But that's a story for another time.

I truly did not recognize Benicio del Toro the first few times I saw this film. He looks so different as a young fella and I'm used to seeing him in present day lol. Such a good actor
The shark scene is lifted from the novel Live and Let Die, "He disagreed..." note and all. Felix Leiter is fed to a shark by Mr. Big's henchmen and ends up with a hook on one hand and a stump on one leg. He leaves the CIA and joins Pinkerton's, and appears in several later books. He and Bond have a great Bro relationship in the books, talking a lot of shit when they hang out. The Leiter character is underutilized in the movies, IMHO. He is from Texas and drives a Studebaker with a Cadillac engine. Kind of a badass, even after the shark attack.
Licence To Kill kicks off Bond's savage, bloody, sweet 16! In 1990 MGM was bought by Pathe Entertainment and the Bond rights were sold off, resulting in Albert Brocolli sueing, resulting in a legal battle that would span the early 1990s... Dalton was originally contracted for 3 films, with the third picture allegedly titled Property of a Lady, referencing a Fleming Short Story... By the time the legal issues were resolved, it was 1993 and Dalton's contract had since expired. Dalton never wanted to just be known as Bond, so when Brocolli offered Dalton multiple more Bond films, he declined, as he just wanted to complete that third Bond film he was contracted for. So Pierce took over for Goldeneye. This ends the classic era of Bond, with this film being the last film to be produced by Albert Brocolli, directed by John Glen, and have the title sequence done by Maurice Binder. The 90s saw a changing of the guard with Brocolli's daughter Barbara and step-son Michael G Wilson becoming the main producers... Daniel Kleinman would become the main title sequence designer, and we would see a different director for each new Bond film...
Jen, you have won the number one top spot on my list for "Favorite Canadian CZcamsr" second place goes to Cinebinge and third being Popcorn in Bed. You have taken the James Bond journey and have entertained the masses with wit and comedy (especially those wisdom nuggets). So happy I subscribed to your channel.
It's one of the more atypical Bond movies, it doesn't feel like a classic Bond movie since there's no spy mission, it's more of a Taken-style personal vendetta with Liam Nesson, mixed with a bit of Miami Vice Tv Show, in what is to pursue drug traffickers and disarm their plans. Even so, the result is good and the action scenes in the final part with real trucks, filmed on one of the most dangerous mountain routes on the planet in Mexico, are spectacular, one of the best action scenes in the saga.
Dalton is my fav 007. He plays the character closest to the Flemming Bond. There was a lot of legal issues after this movie, and they lasted for several years. When it finally came time to do the next Bond movie, Dalton didn't want to or producers didn't want him again, don't know which.
He wanted to do ONLY one more but cubby said you can’t do that because it’s been a six years gap so you have to do more and he didn’t want to make that commitment or else what happened to sir Roger Moore would happen to him where he overstayed his welcome so he left

The most violent, dark, and controversial James Bond movie, as it was the first Bond mivie to recieve a PG-13 rating. This was the second and final time we see Timothy Dalton as James Bond. He was going to come back in a third film, but he was dropped (fired) from playing the iconic super spy. This was the first Bond movie I saw on CBS back in 1995 to promote the upcoming GOLDENEYE.
Like On Her Majesty's Secret Service, this film has gotten panned but reappraisal over the years. And speaking of which, this is as close to a spiritual of sequel to OHMSS we should have gotten.
Fun fact - This is the first Bond film to not use the title of an Ian Fleming novel or shirt story, but there are a lot of elements taken from several books that weren't used on film. Felix Leiter being fed to sharks and the shootout at the bait warehouse are from Live And Let Die, Milton Krest is from The Hildebrand Rarity and the plot of Bond befriending the villain to work for him and bring down the organization from inside is the main plot of The Man With The Golden Gun.
"Who's this chump?" That's Wayne Newton, he's a famous singer who headlined in Vegas for the longest time. "Is it possible to do that with a big truck like that?" Possible? Yes. Easy? No, not at all. But he's Bond so it's a piece of cake for him. "He popped a wheelie" Now _that_ isn't possible, they actually had to make a specially modded truck cab for that scene.

Liking this one a lot is in no way a bad thing. It's genuinely one of my favourite Bond movies, and I share your sentiment that Dalton didn't do more movies (there's a whole story behind it, in basic terms the studios were hesitant on doing another and he was under contract to be readily available for another film at all times should they decide on one... but they didn't decide for years so he ended up leaving the role to put food on the table with other roles). I'm still a die-hard fan of Moore's Bond, but Dalton is without a doubt my second favourite. 'License To Kill' is a cornerstone of Bond for me, it's up there with 'Goldfinger' and 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (among others), and I'm glad you had such a great time with it.
I've been a Bond fan for decades, and for me, this ranks top 5 overall. Dalton is unabashedly dark, gritty and vengeful - and frankly the closest to what Bond was on the written page, IMO. And I honestly don't care how "over the top" the truck scenes at the end were - I loved every second. "Don't you want to know why" is one of my favorite Bond moments of all time.
Robert Davi as Sanchez is one of the best villains in Bond, I think. So underrated, like the movie as a whole. He is intimidating, his ambitions are realistic and credible, he is a narcissist but also smart and manipulative. He prides himself in being cool, calm and collected which makes him even more scary when he loses control and the complete sociopath comes out. There are many good Bond villains, but Sanchez is one of very few that I really feel, if you know what I mean. Being a cool villain is easy, but being a scary one is something else.
Yes, the truck stunt, with the truck driving on its side, is 100% real. They had built a tractor-trailer that was one solid piece, but stunt driver Remy Julienne didn’t need it, and instead did that actual stunt, for real, using a regular, articulated tractor-trailer setup.
The scene where Felix is fed to the shark and left with the note- he disagreed with something that ate him was from the Ian Fleming novel, Live and Let Die, but the producers felt the scene was too violent when the Roger Moore film was filmed in the 70s

I consider this THE best Bond-movie, hands down. Timothy Dalton shines in this; this is HIS movie, his hour. He simply is Ian Fleming's James Bond. It might be dark as something, but that's what gives the movie such gravitas. Also big kudos to Sanchez and badass Pam Bouvier.

Dalton was a study of the Ian Fleming's books and wanted to play closer to the character bond in Quantum of Solace. Another less know film in this tone is The Tale of Ian Fleming in WWII. It shows the historical roots of several bond characters to come out in Casino Royale. Ironically the protagonist of the film is played by Sean Connery's son.
Today is National Villian Day and my pick is Franz Sanchez! He's is the best villian in the series with the best character development. I love how he is basically a mirror image of Bond (Loyalty is more important to me than money). The best villians in Bond are usually a mirror image of Bond which you will see in the future Bond movies.
Hi Jen. Yes a stinger is a missile. Also Deep Six comes from an old nautical term. In the deep six meaning six fathoms (or 36 feet). This was believed to be the depth at which a body (or person) was not retrievable. There is also a correlation to six feet, which is of course the depth at which the dead are buried on land. Deep Six became a popular expression because of the Watergate investigation. One of the conspirators, I believe it was John Dean, testified that it was suggested to him that he "deep six" the evidence as he crossed a bridge on the way home from work.
Pam Bouvier is the most underrated Bond woman. Probably because Licence to Kill is so underrated. She's feisty, she has her own mission separate to Bond's. She even saves Bond a few times. One of the best allies Bond has had to date.

Yes, the villain's right hand is a young Benicio del Toro, long before he was famous, it must be from his first works in Hollywood. By the way, I recommend the Sicario movies with Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, they are very good.
In addition to "Goonies," Robert Davi, "Sanchez" plays one of the two "Agent Johnsons" in "Die Hard." "Deep Six" was a slang I heard growing up back in the late 70s and 80s for killing someone. I believe it is referencing the fact that burying a dead body requires them to be put six feet deep under the ground. And as for being called a Commander, Bond is actually commisioned as an intelligence officer in the British Navy, hence his rank of Commander which is equivalent to a Lt. Colonel in the army.
It's actually a reference to dumping a body into deep ocean, something I'll never confuse with the common misconception of the grave because there was a GI Joe character called Deep Six... a deep sea diver.
It's a shame Timothy Dalton didn't get to do more movies. He was signed to do more but after this movie the franchise ran into some legal issues that kept them from making more movies at the time. After they sorted it all out years had gone by and Dalton decided to move on.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia: Actors Robert Davi(Sanchez) and Grand L. Bush(DEA Agent), previously starred in 1988's Die Hard. They were the two FBI agents named Johnson. Also, composer Michael Kamen did the music for both Die Hard and Licence To Kill. Thanks again Jen!
Despite only making two Bond films, I can't recall hearing anyone speak about his performances and approach with anything other than the utmost respect. Roger Moore used to say that Timothy Dalton was his favourite Bond actor. Moore knew that that was what the series needed, but it just wasn't his style. Interestingly, the producers were interested in Dalton back in 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1981. Dalton wasn't keen on the direction the films had taken with Moonraker (1979) etc but, ironically, For Your Eyes Only was a lot more serious and realistic (my favourite)

Jen, as so many people are saying, your Bond reactions are so wholesome and entertaining. You’re getting so knowledgeable about the series the further you go into it. So happy that you’re a Dalton supporter as well - he really is the best version of Flemings Bond on the screen. Licence to Kill is my favourite film in the series, regardless of how controversial that may seem to many. I echo your thoughts that he should have stayed in the role for longer. I'm so glad I saw this (and the other Dalton film) in the theater. I'll never forget the opening credits/song at the beginning of this particular one. I saw both Dalton films in the same theater which was very large and the screen was huge, as was the sound system. So memorable. Also glad so many others have pointed out (as I did previously) that the franchise was embroiled in a nasty lawsuit for years after this entry came out, which is the main reason Dalton didn't return in 1995. One last thing of note is that this was the last Bond movie (to date) that was released in the summer movie season. Reason being (likely) was Batman (1989) destroyed everything in its path at the Box Office in that summer of 89', and Lethal Weapon 2 was also released at almost the same exact time as Licence To Kill was released. Eon Productions has never repeated this misstep, as every Bond film after Licence To Kill was released in the fall. They obviously learned their lesson. When it was announced years after LTKill was released that Dalton wouldn't return as Bond I was heartbroken. Such is life.

YEEEEEES! You loving this so much is giving me life, Jen! This is actually my #1 Bond film in my ranking. I love the callbacks to Tracy, I love Bond being out for revenge, Sanchez is a cruel, but charming villain and Pam a brilliant, badass Bond girl. Not to mention Q finally being an active part of the mission! And the score done by Michael Kamen, who did the music for so many 80s action classics like Highlander, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I think I speak for a large part of the fandom, when I say, that we all wish Dalton had done more Bond movies. He's my favorite Bond and a lot of people have said the very same thing about Moore better having ended his era sooner and Dalton doing more movies. Still, I love that the two Bond movies we got with him are so great. Now comes the Brosnan era, which is a mixed bag for me, but I'm sure you're gonna have lots of fun with it 😊
Yes Composer John Barry's last Bond score was "Living Daylights" he did it as a favor to the Bond producers to kick off Timothy Dalton as the new Bond. They even gave him an on screen cameo as the conductor of the orchestra near the end of that picture.

Licence is the British spelling... Brocolli had originally called this film Licence Revoked, but he changed it because he didn't think Americans would understand the word "revoked". This ultimately led to poor advertising, as the film's title was essentially changed at the last minute. Licence To Kill is still the lowest grossing Bond film of all time... Unfortunately, Dalton was not appreciated as Bond in his time, as audiences were more used to Roger Moore's style... I'm glad that Dalton has come back into favor over these recent years
This is unapologetically one of my favorite bond movies. It's an underrated gem in the bond franchise and I think there's a lot of people who wish Dalton had more movies. He was awesome in the role.
Dalton was, by far, the closest to the Bond from the novels. He was the type of actor Ian Fleming would have loved to work with when he was alive.

Timothy Dalton is a very underrated Bond. At the time, he didn’t get a lot of love since he came after Connery and Moore.
Dalton was under contract to make 4 Bonds between 1987-1993, but the films got tied-up in legal issues. They usually pumped them out every two years, but Dalton couldn’t wait around so went and got different acting jobs. By the time they were ready to go 5 years later, Dalton was busy with something else, so they got Brosnan instead. Who knows what Bonds we missed out in ‘91 and ‘93.
@@DeanStrickson Goldeneye was written with Dalton in mind but because of the delays due to legal issues preventing Bond films from being produced for newly 5 years Dalton was ready to move on to other projects and didn’t want to commit another contract to do more films after Goldeneye as was 48 years old by then and resigned from the role in 1994 while working on a miniseries. Pierce Brosnan took over the role officially.

James Bond originally was just a man's man, didn't need to look like a professional mountain climber with 10% body fat. But today Bond is just nothing like back in the 60's and 70's.

The stiff competition from bourne and mission impossible, compounded with MGM blowing away all its profits from the bond films into casinos nearly leading the company to bankruptcy, made it all the more difficult for bond movies to be released on a regular basis. Hence, the skyfall and NTTD delays

YES! This is my Personal Favorite Bond movie! One of the very few that actually felt like the Bond that Ian Fleming originally created.
Too bad that audiences were so used to the streamlined version from all the previous movies, that they didn't appreciate how faithful to the original idea this movie was.

yes Jen Murray is the best on these BOND films, This one was grittier than most and a real good perf by Robert Davi as the cartel bad guy. btw While Carey Lowell wore a wig for the scenes set in the United States, a scene where Bouvier cuts her hair was added so Lowell's natural short hair could be used. SHe is stunning and was a long time co star of NBC Law & Order and so gorgeous as 5ft 10 beauty on tv's longest running Crime/ Law show

This movie used parts of the Live and Let Die novel that wasn't used previously. The producers happened to bump into David Hedison who had played Felix Leiter in Live and Let Die and thought he was still able enough to play the role. During the scene when they parachute to the church there were two takes, the first one is the one you see in the movie. The second take, the director wanted them to land a little faster, David's leg bent and was injured and limped the rest of the movie. He had issues with that leg the rest of his life. Our family was good friends with David Hedison and would met up with him at conventions. I have a couple of interviews I filmed with him on my VT channel and I ran his website for several years.
Both of the FBI agents from the first Die Hard are in this movie. Robert Davi (Sanchez) and Grand L Bush (Agent Hawkins, the guy who tells Bond to "let it go")
Guess we're gonna need some more FBI guys.... 😉

I absolutely love the scene where Q is waiting out on the street in disguise. The cars drive by and he uses a radio built in to a broom. Once he's done, after years of complaining that Bond never brings any equipment back, he just dumps his equipment in a bush and walks away.

Sanchez is an awesome villain. Menacing and sadistic but also feels real and grounded. Dalton and Robert Davi have great chemistry. Must be the only Bond movie where the villain actually wants to be pals with Bond.

Timothy Dalton gives Bond some real vulnerability and emotion compared to the previous actors, it really is a huge shame they couldn't get him started sooner. I think Pierce Brosnan still has a bit of Dalton's edge in the upcoming GoldenEye, which I'm sure you're going to love, filled with great villains. Also, the music for Licence to Kill is by Michael Kamen! He's done a ton of awesome soundtracks including the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard franchises. He also worked with Queen on Highlander, which I definitely think is a movie you'd enjoy. Sean Connery is also in that
They wanted him twice before he got the role. The first was on her majesty’s secret service but he thought and was correct about it that he was too young to play a veteran agent and the second was for your eyes only which REALLY should’ve been his first and he could’ve carried the franchise in the 80s but they wanted to stay with the formula that by the 80s and Moore as bond was becoming increasingly and obviously passé he declined again for that reason and that he wanted to make his bond his own he almost didn’t get it because he was busy and pierce was going to take it but he got a contract renewal for a tv series he was working on and then the role was open for dalton to take
I remember being so frustrated when this one came out because it had a 15 certificate in the UK and I was 11 at the time. My older sister was particularly obnoxious about it as she was old enough to beat the age limit.

This was my first Bond film at the cinema I was 10 years old when this came out in 1989 and I'm in the U.K. My Father took my older brother who was 13 years old at the time and me to see it, but we didn't know it was a 15 Certificate until we arrived at the cinema which was about 25 miles from home (the closest cinema to us at the time). My Father got the tickets and we just walked in with a crowd of people with me as far from the usher's view as possible trying not to be noticed as here in the U.K. you have to be the age of the film certificate to gain entry, unlike the U.S. where a parent or someone of age can take you in even if you are not of age.

Ha, I felt exactly the same. I was 7 (unbelievable that I was so into Bond that young, I saw loads taped off daytime TV which must've been heavily edited for violence), I was gutted I couldn't go and watch this at the cinema. Had to wait til I was about 12 or 13 before I persuaded my parents (well, my dad) to watch it first on VHS to check it wasn't too gory. Used to scare the hell out of me as a kid, Davi was genuinely utterly menacing in the role of Sanchez. Watching it now, I also appreciate Zerb's performance as Krest, just really good at conveying a guy with serious anxiety and drink problems who also happens to be a total slimeball psycho.
I took the love of my life to see this at The Odeon, Marble Arch, a couple of days after its premiere in June 1989. We were teenagers and it was our first real date.
She is currently poking me in the back and quoting lines from this film. We have been very happily married for 32 years, and are both huge Bond fans.

To the best of my knowledge, with Dalton they tried to go back to the character of Bond from the books, make him darker and with more of an emotional edge, so to speak, and I liked his two films a lot. This one is one of my favorites for sure, and Robert Davi brought a sinister and deadly edge to his villian which I found very effective along with Benicio Del Toro as his henchman. It's a shame we didn't get more with Dalton but very glad that we have these two and at least he brought something different to the franchise much as his predecessors did. Great reaction!

Timothy Dalton is my personal favorite Bond. He was way ahead of his time in his portrayal of the character. He did what Daniel Craig did, but fifteen years earlier, with his darker more tormented and more realistic version of Bond. Unfortunately I don't think audiences were really ready for a Bond like that, especially right off the back of Roger Moore, which is why I think he only got the two movies :(

The score was composed and conducted by the late Michael Kamen, as John Barry was in the hospital after he ruptured his esophagus and had to drop out. Kamen did music for the LETHAL WEAPON and DIE HARD movies, as both film franchises share the same bombastic action theme.
SPOT ON JEN!!! This one stands apart from the rest with the most non-formula plot… and Dalton’s Bond is so good… & really smart (the ins & outs of his fooling one villain while framing the other). Concerning the ending theme - 'If you ask me to' feels like a statement from Bond to Bouvier. If she asked, he would leave everything for her. Due to this interpretation, it's my favorite Bond 'love theme'. And Patti Labelle crushes it. Celine's version is a pale imitator.

The song didn’t fit the tone of the movie anyway. You’ve got maybe the grittiest Bond film ever until Quantum of Solace and a soul ballad singer from the 70s and 80s singing that kind of theme song. The whole movie seems like they had an idea, and then wimped out. They got so gritty and dark that they felt they needed ridiculous comic relief out of nowhere. Desmond as Q has always hated being in the field. Now he’s goofing off and handing Dalton wacky packages and silly gadgets that would better suit a Roger Moore movie. It was Bond trying to be too much like an American TV movie. I like what they were trying to do, and the villain is great, but did we really see Felix as Bond’s close friend? He’s an ally, but friend? That came out of nowhere. We’ve never seen to that point Bond and Leiter in a social, relaxed situation. We’ve only seen them on the job. And the actor they picked was from Live and Let Die. So there’s no connection to Dalton and for younger fans, no connection to Bond at all.
@@christhornycroft3686in the novels bond and Felix are extremely close, i mean not that they see each other all the time but when they do they catch up on the good times. Plus this had elements from the novel live and let die so while it might not look like a bond film it definitely felt like one. the violence in the novels is just horrific as the movie and bond does get hurt and scarred a lot. I agree on the actor playing Felix being the same one as in the movie live and let die not making any sense because young fans aren’t gonna really make the connection.

The Patti LaBelle song is one of my favorite ending credit songs in the series. I saw this just before visiting Salem Massachusetts in October 2019 during Halloween time and that song always reminds me of that trip. Celine Dion 🇨🇦 also did a cover of it! 🙂🎶

Timothy Dalton is actually my favorite Bond. This movie is also my favorite Bond film. The last Bond film that didn't take itself too serious. It had adventure, action and most importantly humor. Every Bond film since then has become more and more serious and less fun.

Benicio del Toro really hit the ground running in his movie career. So fun seeing him this young.
At this point in the series this was the first time an actor had played Felix Leiter more than once, even though David Hedison last played him in Live and Let Die and John Terry had played him in between.
Also, Felix losing his leg to the shark and the note on his body are straight out of the novel Live and Let Die. In the book series Felix has a wooden leg and a hook for a hand every time he appears after.

Sanchez is one of my ALL time favorite bond vilain : He's scary, sadist, dangerous and one of the most realistic vilain in the bond franchise. I wish we've had more vilains like him in bond movies :(

For a different film with Timothy Dalton, I recommend The Rocketeer. He plays a swashbuckling movie star in the late 1930s. It was made not long after this movie. It comes from a time when Disney took more risks.
He was also in Flash Gordon and the comedy Hot Fuzz.
OK Jen, you wanted to hear my Timothy Dalton story, so here it is. You mentioned that you were once a banquet server, me as well. I got my start at a Fairmont hotel in Denver. There, I had encountered many celebrities, heads of state, and lots of rich and powerful people. Let's just say, I had gotten training there that served me well. Eventually I moved to Key West Florida. I was, hired to work in a five star gourmet restaurant called Henry's at a resort called the Casa Marina. Alot of the filming for License to Kill was in Key West. Opon the completion of the film, they had a cast party and dinner at the restaurant where I worked. I met the entire cast of the film, Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, and so on. Once the dinner was over, MR. Dalton asked me if I would like to join the party on the resorts grounds. Of course I said yes. Most people with fame come in two types, very nice, humble and gracious, or they are just so into themselves, they view everyone else as beneath them. Timothy Dalton is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I have had many memorable personal experiences with famous people. There's only one encounter that tops the interaction I had with MR. Dalton, and that would be the time I had dinner with James Stewart. But that's a story for another time.

I truly did not recognize Benicio del Toro the first few times I saw this film. He looks so different as a young fella and I'm used to seeing him in present day lol. Such a good actor
The shark scene is lifted from the novel Live and Let Die, "He disagreed..." note and all. Felix Leiter is fed to a shark by Mr. Big's henchmen and ends up with a hook on one hand and a stump on one leg. He leaves the CIA and joins Pinkerton's, and appears in several later books. He and Bond have a great Bro relationship in the books, talking a lot of shit when they hang out. The Leiter character is underutilized in the movies, IMHO. He is from Texas and drives a Studebaker with a Cadillac engine. Kind of a badass, even after the shark attack.
Licence To Kill kicks off Bond's savage, bloody, sweet 16! In 1990 MGM was bought by Pathe Entertainment and the Bond rights were sold off, resulting in Albert Brocolli sueing, resulting in a legal battle that would span the early 1990s... Dalton was originally contracted for 3 films, with the third picture allegedly titled Property of a Lady, referencing a Fleming Short Story... By the time the legal issues were resolved, it was 1993 and Dalton's contract had since expired. Dalton never wanted to just be known as Bond, so when Brocolli offered Dalton multiple more Bond films, he declined, as he just wanted to complete that third Bond film he was contracted for. So Pierce took over for Goldeneye.
This ends the classic era of Bond, with this film being the last film to be produced by Albert Brocolli, directed by John Glen, and have the title sequence done by Maurice Binder. The 90s saw a changing of the guard with Brocolli's daughter Barbara and step-son Michael G Wilson becoming the main producers... Daniel Kleinman would become the main title sequence designer, and we would see a different director for each new Bond film...

It's one of the more atypical Bond movies, it doesn't feel like a classic Bond movie since there's no spy mission, it's more of a Taken-style personal vendetta with Liam Nesson, mixed with a bit of Miami Vice Tv Show, in what is to pursue drug traffickers and disarm their plans. Even so, the result is good and the action scenes in the final part with real trucks, filmed on one of the most dangerous mountain routes on the planet in Mexico, are spectacular, one of the best action scenes in the saga.
Dalton is my fav 007. He plays the character closest to the Flemming Bond. There was a lot of legal issues after this movie, and they lasted for several years. When it finally came time to do the next Bond movie, Dalton didn't want to or producers didn't want him again, don't know which.
He wanted to do ONLY one more but cubby said you can’t do that because it’s been a six years gap so you have to do more and he didn’t want to make that commitment or else what happened to sir Roger Moore would happen to him where he overstayed his welcome so he left

The most violent, dark, and controversial James Bond movie, as it was the first Bond mivie to recieve a PG-13 rating.
This was the second and final time we see Timothy Dalton as James Bond.
He was going to come back in a third film, but he was dropped (fired) from playing the iconic super spy.
This was the first Bond movie I saw on CBS back in 1995 to promote the upcoming GOLDENEYE.
Like On Her Majesty's Secret Service, this film has gotten panned but reappraisal over the years. And speaking of which, this is as close to a spiritual of sequel to OHMSS we should have gotten.
It did well in the box office though.
Fun fact - This is the first Bond film to not use the title of an Ian Fleming novel or shirt story, but there are a lot of elements taken from several books that weren't used on film. Felix Leiter being fed to sharks and the shootout at the bait warehouse are from Live And Let Die, Milton Krest is from The Hildebrand Rarity and the plot of Bond befriending the villain to work for him and bring down the organization from inside is the main plot of The Man With The Golden Gun.

This is the darkest out of all the old bond movies but it’s a really good one. Love the reactions.
The working title of this film was "Licence Revoked." The producers changed the title because they didn't think he audience knew what the word 'revoked' meant.
Liking this one a lot is in no way a bad thing. It's genuinely one of my favourite Bond movies, and I share your sentiment that Dalton didn't do more movies (there's a whole story behind it, in basic terms the studios were hesitant on doing another and he was under contract to be readily available for another film at all times should they decide on one... but they didn't decide for years so he ended up leaving the role to put food on the table with other roles).
I'm still a die-hard fan of Moore's Bond, but Dalton is without a doubt my second favourite. 'License To Kill' is a cornerstone of Bond for me, it's up there with 'Goldfinger' and 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (among others), and I'm glad you had such a great time with it.
I've been a Bond fan for decades, and for me, this ranks top 5 overall. Dalton is unabashedly dark, gritty and vengeful - and frankly the closest to what Bond was on the written page, IMO. And I honestly don't care how "over the top" the truck scenes at the end were - I loved every second. "Don't you want to know why" is one of my favorite Bond moments of all time.
Dalton was ahead of his time. Angry and brooding. Love the guy.

Robert Davi as Sanchez is one of the best villains in Bond, I think. So underrated, like the movie as a whole. He is intimidating, his ambitions are realistic and credible, he is a narcissist but also smart and manipulative. He prides himself in being cool, calm and collected which makes him even more scary when he loses control and the complete sociopath comes out. There are many good Bond villains, but Sanchez is one of very few that I really feel, if you know what I mean. Being a cool villain is easy, but being a scary one is something else.
Yes, the truck stunt, with the truck driving on its side, is 100% real.
They had built a tractor-trailer that was one solid piece, but stunt driver Remy Julienne didn’t need it, and instead did that actual stunt, for real, using a regular, articulated tractor-trailer setup.

The scene where Felix is fed to the shark and left with the note- he disagreed with something that ate him was from the Ian Fleming novel, Live and Let Die, but the producers felt the scene was too violent when the Roger Moore film was filmed in the 70s
Roger Moore used a compressed air cylinder intended to fight sharks to explore dictator Kananga, "He did have a overinflated opinion of himself!"
The creepy meditation dude is the legendary Las Vegas performer Wayne Newton. And the opening theme song by Gladys knight was always one of my favorites.

I consider this THE best Bond-movie, hands down. Timothy Dalton shines in this; this is HIS movie, his hour. He simply is Ian Fleming's James Bond. It might be dark as something, but that's what gives the movie such gravitas. Also big kudos to Sanchez and badass Pam Bouvier.

Dalton was a study of the Ian Fleming's books and wanted to play closer to the character bond in Quantum of Solace. Another less know film in this tone is The Tale of Ian Fleming in WWII. It shows the historical roots of several bond characters to come out in Casino Royale. Ironically the protagonist of the film is played by Sean Connery's son.
Today is National Villian Day and my pick is Franz Sanchez! He's is the best villian in the series with the best character development. I love how he is basically a mirror image of Bond (Loyalty is more important to me than money). The best villians in Bond are usually a mirror image of Bond which you will see in the future Bond movies.

Hi Jen. Yes a stinger is a missile. Also Deep Six comes from an old nautical term. In the deep six meaning six fathoms (or 36 feet). This was believed to be the depth at which a body (or person) was not retrievable. There is also a correlation to six feet, which is of course the depth at which the dead are buried on land. Great reaction as always Jen!
Deep Six became a popular expression because of the Watergate investigation. One of the conspirators, I believe it was John Dean, testified that it was suggested to him that he "deep six" the evidence as he crossed a bridge on the way home from work.
Pam Bouvier is the most underrated Bond woman. Probably because Licence to Kill is so underrated. She's feisty, she has her own mission separate to Bond's. She even saves Bond a few times. One of the best allies Bond has had to date.
The villain was also the lead FBI agent in the first Die Hard movie and also appeared in several television shows.
He also played a detective in Maniac Cop 2 and 3

Yes, the villain's right hand is a young Benicio del Toro, long before he was famous, it must be from his first works in Hollywood. By the way, I recommend the Sicario movies with Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, they are very good.

Dalton's run of Bond is one my favourites underrated and I ❤ 80s 🤗
In addition to "Goonies," Robert Davi, "Sanchez" plays one of the two "Agent Johnsons" in "Die Hard." Also, Anthony Starke, "Truman-Lodge," in this, has the dually impressive feat of being in one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes, "The Jimmy," and he has a name that's very nearly the same as Tony Stark, Iron Man.
"Deep Six" was a slang I heard growing up back in the late 70s and 80s for killing someone. I believe it is referencing the fact that burying a dead body requires them to be put six feet deep under the ground.
And as for being called a Commander, Bond is actually commisioned as an intelligence officer in the British Navy, hence his rank of Commander which is equivalent to a Lt. Colonel in the army.
It's actually a reference to dumping a body into deep ocean, something I'll never confuse with the common misconception of the grave because there was a GI Joe character called Deep Six... a deep sea diver.
It's a shame Timothy Dalton didn't get to do more movies. He was signed to do more but after this movie the franchise ran into some legal issues that kept them from making more movies at the time. After they sorted it all out years had gone by and Dalton decided to move on.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia: Actors Robert Davi(Sanchez) and Grand L. Bush(DEA Agent), previously starred in 1988's Die Hard. They were the two FBI agents named Johnson. Also, composer Michael Kamen did the music for both Die Hard and Licence To Kill. Thanks again Jen!
Despite only making two Bond films, I can't recall hearing anyone speak about his performances and approach with anything other than the utmost respect. Roger Moore used to say that Timothy Dalton was his favourite Bond actor. Moore knew that that was what the series needed, but it just wasn't his style. Interestingly, the producers were interested in Dalton back in 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1981. Dalton wasn't keen on the direction the films had taken with Moonraker (1979) etc but, ironically, For Your Eyes Only was a lot more serious and realistic (my favourite)

Jen, as so many people are saying, your Bond reactions are so wholesome and entertaining. You’re getting so knowledgeable about the series the further you go into it. So happy that you’re a Dalton supporter as well - he really is the best version of Flemings Bond on the screen. Licence to Kill is my favourite film in the series, regardless of how controversial that may seem to many. I echo your thoughts that he should have stayed in the role for longer. I'm so glad I saw this (and the other Dalton film) in the theater. I'll never forget the opening credits/song at the beginning of this particular one. I saw both Dalton films in the same theater which was very large and the screen was huge, as was the sound system. So memorable. Also glad so many others have pointed out (as I did previously) that the franchise was embroiled in a nasty lawsuit for years after this entry came out, which is the main reason Dalton didn't return in 1995.
One last thing of note is that this was the last Bond movie (to date) that was released in the summer movie season. Reason being (likely) was Batman (1989) destroyed everything in its path at the Box Office in that summer of 89', and Lethal Weapon 2 was also released at almost the same exact time as Licence To Kill was released. Eon Productions has never repeated this misstep, as every Bond film after Licence To Kill was released in the fall. They obviously learned their lesson. When it was announced years after LTKill was released that Dalton wouldn't return as Bond I was heartbroken. Such is life.

YEEEEEES! You loving this so much is giving me life, Jen! This is actually my #1 Bond film in my ranking. I love the callbacks to Tracy, I love Bond being out for revenge, Sanchez is a cruel, but charming villain and Pam a brilliant, badass Bond girl. Not to mention Q finally being an active part of the mission! And the score done by Michael Kamen, who did the music for so many 80s action classics like Highlander, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
I think I speak for a large part of the fandom, when I say, that we all wish Dalton had done more Bond movies. He's my favorite Bond and a lot of people have said the very same thing about Moore better having ended his era sooner and Dalton doing more movies. Still, I love that the two Bond movies we got with him are so great. Now comes the Brosnan era, which is a mixed bag for me, but I'm sure you're gonna have lots of fun with it 😊
Yes Composer John Barry's last Bond score was "Living Daylights" he did it as a favor to the Bond producers to kick off Timothy Dalton as the new Bond. They even gave him an on screen cameo as the conductor of the orchestra near the end of that picture.
