Ive been trying to naildown the âcrowd singing alongâ effect for months and this is what Iâve learned so far it may help others: - Crowds canât hit high notes very well. First step is to gather all the high notes in a phrase and transpose it down a semi tone or two. - I donât transpose the entire phrase, just the higher notes, crowds can hit low notes just fine. - Crowds donât really sing per se, itâs more like they yell lyrics so you actually want it to sound less musical. - Crowds are always off key and off timing. Every added layer should have the pitch/timing nudged around slightly different. - Use white noise or a general âcrowd cheeringâ effect in the background to fill in space. - Remember crowd volume is not constant, they tend to be much louder at some parts. For example, watch a live performance of Living On A Prayer, crowds sing like âoh weâre halfway there, OH. OH! LIV-ING ON A PRAYER!!! take my hand-â. You get the idea. Using saturation on these parts is pretty effective. - I like to create a separate bus with reverb, saturation, tremolo, formant and whatever else. Make every layer feed into the bus and automate each layer so the various effects ebb and flows throughout the phrase. This part is tedious as fuck. For me personally I sort of had an epiphany when I saw the music video for âDua Lipa - Feverâ. Thereâs a skit in it that really helped me understand this a lot. Might help others too.
