I used the Steam deck to reset my backlog, there was a time in my early 20s when I had a running list of all the games that I needed to play, and as a result the games just became homework. I have a list of 3 games that I plan to work through over the next year (planning on playing through the Kingdom Heart series). I will pick up a few of my old favorites on Steam sales but I needed a big reset and not having access to a game pass and taking a LONG break from Bethesda RPGs, as really helped me enjoy my gaming more.

I share a very similar mindset towards the Switch and Nintendo in general. My Switch can go with me and play what’s on it no problem. No need to be online to verify ownership of the game. Great battery life where I can go without a charger. Like you mentioned the games are just fun to play. I always gravitate back to my Switch after a bit. I’m really looking forward to the next version of it.

  • @pheria
    @pheria Před 2 měsíci

Interesting to listen to. The guilt isn't really the problem I have, (if I don't enjoy something I bought or received have no problem dropping it, for example). I do still have this desire to want to play so many games, because there are so many things I want to enjoy. I really like round-robin type approaches to sample and try out a lot of things. Like, rotating by system every day or something. Yet, when I reflect back on games I've enjoyed the most and formed the strongest memories of, it's usually ones that I played with focus (It was mainly all I was playing. I was always looking forward to free time to continue). However, I still find the idea of dedicating time slices to various things appealing. I like rhythm games, and that ones I enjoy are basically endless (which is great), so I find myself tempted to schedule in a day of the week for one. And then for the others, and then for some game I wanted to play again, and then for some long story focused thing I want to see through for the first time. There are no wrong choices, and yet, making a choice is so difficult somehow and I've oversubscribed my time.
In trying to design various 'systems' to make the choices a bit more automatic, I fall into spending too much time trying to prepare/nest/plan. I do similar things with physical organization of my environment. This is where some of the points in your video do become relevant. When you talk about not worrying about playing the 'best' version, and just playing. You have to be able to switch out of plan/prep mode and into relax/enjoy mode. Which is usually the problem. I don't have guilt for the things I bought but haven't played yet, I have guilt about allowing myself to relax/enjoy - because I feel like I should be 'doing' something. Even if that something is just trying to architect 'the perfect system for my free time'. Ways to combat the (very real) analysis paralysis are good and all (and sometimes fun to do themselves), but they're just distracting me from the actual fun I could be having most of the time. There's no reason to do that (at least not as much as I do). My environment doesn't have to be perfect first, nor does my decision about what to play. Just play.

I completely agree eliminating choice helps to keep us feeling fulfilled in our entertainment. We spend less time wondering if there’s something better to play and it allows us to focus on what we have.
I’ve sold my switch and series S. Now I’m down to just my PS5 and steamdeck. I’m considering selling my PS5 and going just full-on steamdeck.

A lot of the “I gotta finish XYZ” mentality (for me) comes from wanting to experience what everyone else has deemed a “phenomenal” game/story.
I have my main franchises that I love that I’ll play no matter what, but when I’m in a dry spell, I tend to seek out what others have said is going to be worth my time- so to speak.
I’ve been let down by this approach quite a few times. Maybe something is overhyped, maybe I have high expectations going in…whatever the case.
For me at this point, it’s like a few major games release every year that I HAVE to play (Zelda, FF rebirth) but barring those, I tend to fill my time with older stuff that I enjoy.

Now, i look at it and say i will NOT move onto the next game until i finish this one. the only exception is if the game is absolute dog water. but so far, i am beating outer wilds, next is windwaker, then the second half of cyberpunk. i am doing GREAT sticking to that way of living. None of the new games get my attention so that also helps.

Between modern ps5, switch, pc, emulation titles I think I could get through them in a few years if I did nothing else. But I don’t feel pressure to beat anything. I don’t have that kind of time, so I spend it with my favorites. Certain games I love can’t be necessarily be beaten but your skills can be honed further, for me that game is gran turismo 7. Still, I want to experience some new stuff and support the studios who make them so we can get more cool stuff.

  • @RyotoCZ

September 2023 is the time I hit a big reset, when I sold my PS4 with all games, and got Series S instead. Starting fresh, with no games on this platform I got excited. I was playing some games from game pass and it was great. I also purchased dev mode to play PS2 games because of nostalgia, and Im glad to have this option. I love this console but... I already purchased 43 games so far and from these, I did not finish single one. But two of them were a big disappointment for me, so I created a group of dropped games and put them there.
But I did finish 3 games from game pass so far, so I guess its something.
I have been thinking about this topic alot, and I did create a lot of groups for my games. The big chunk of it is a month and year when I bought the game, so I can see how long its sitting there in my collection. And then I created 3 groups of games based on my priority. They are Top Priority Playlist, Secondary Playlist and Casual Playlist. I did put some actual games Im playing now into them and I do treat them as a queue of games. I do play only 2 first listed games in specific group, so thats 6 games total, and once I finish one, I will remove it and put it inside "Completed in this year" group. Then, next game takes its place. It kind of helps me and motivates me when I can see what games are coming up in the queue.
So far, it somehow works for me... But I will probably never get rid of that temptation of buying new games on sale. Maybe once I get a new priority in my life.
And actualy... There is still my Switch with the same problem and many games.

I easily have at least one year's worth of video games just based off hour counts alone. One franchise alone makes up just over 1/8th of a year in terms of hours, so the initial estimate I had given might be significantly understated. I view my collection of games as a backlog, regardless of the term I still acknowledge they must be played and if not they get sold off.
For me its "I need to experience X game or franchise", I've only ever dropped one game and it was annoying since I had 35hrs of investment at the time of quitting.
