- Just in case it's helpful to see it done, this is how I added some threads to my drone reeds seats.
*Caution: I'm sure over-drilling could crack the bottom bit of your drone. Just 2-3 threads would be plenty, I'm sure. Proceed carefully if you decide to try it! - Hudba
Heritage, thanks~ what a excellent - )
How do you know what size to use? I have a new set of Naills, and want to do this…..
Ah, good point, I should've mentioned that.
I used a really basic caliper, like this one: www.harborfreight.com/6-in-utility-caliper-63664.html?campaignid=12144821732&adsetid=113736752821&product=63664&store=43&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA_tuuBhAUEiwAvxkgTjH4fOuNZK6dlniHtIKjcWbOAanY3XS8AQwvCsnKhGjLV22bp_sFXRoCEbUQAvD_BwE
to measure the inside diameter.
***Do be careful, of course, I could tell that putting too much pressure might crack the wood down there, it's a lot thinner than further up on the drone. I think it was helpful to have a lot of hemp wrapped tight around the wood first, to kinda reinforce it, and then I took it slow and gentle. I found that just the slightest bit of a groove gave the reed's hemped end something to, "hang onto," so it doesn't require much.
Best of luck with it! I hope it goes well and proves useful!
So a caliper will give me the exact size of tap reamer to use on my drone seat?
It'll at least get you close - like, based on the internal measurement I took with calipers, I thought I needed a smaller size than I ended up using -- but luckily the Harbor Freight set I got had a range of sizes, so it didn't end up being a big deal.
Why don't all pipemakers do this from the start??
Amen - to me, it makes so much sense...
I hear the refrain from Fiddler on the Roof in the back of my head, "TRADITIOOOOOOON! TRADITION!"
That's maybe an unfair and tired explanation, but I'm definitely a fan of threads for all reeds...
