The leafs do not have a top 4 core D. They have Rielly. Thats the main problem. Muzzin went down with a career ending injury and never replaced. Front office had 22 mil and got klingberg.

How does Matthews always squeak by with out catching any shots. Man scored 69 goals in the regular season and thus far has 1 in the playoffs. Its been the same story with him for 7 or 8 years now and he always ducks criticism from hockey CZcams channels. He'd be the first person I ship out as he is one of the top paid players on the team and will get you the most back. Sadly though, I think this team is going to run it back again with the same players and use some of the money they save on the Tavares contract to get a goal-tending and a younger D-man or two.
Matthews disappears more in the playoffs than Marner, points-wise... His goals/game percentage drops by 1/3... and it's clear that Matthews puts Matthews first.
I think there’s absolutely no way they can run it back with the same core. The fan backlash this year is just too much, they have to try something new.
Not 1 player would be spared. Line them up outside their lockers & have a new contract talk with the exits in full view.

Nylander and Marner are not winners. Marner is a kid. You can't win if you're afraid to hurt. And both are afraid of contact and pain. You can't win with this as your core.
Matthews is scared of scoring goals or playing two-way hockey in April. Always has been.

Fact: the Leafs hold the record of all NHL franchises for the longest drought not playing in the Stanley Cup Finals - last time was 1967 - 1967. Let that sink in.
It makes a LOT of sense. Tons of sense. The Leafs have WAY too much cash in the 4 Amigos. Other than Morgan, they have almost NOTHING of value on Defence. In Goal, they are just average. NOTHING in that scenario has changed in 5 years. Replacing Dubas with Treliving was like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Tre only swapped out the fringe players, while the Four were rotting from the inside. Three weeks ago, my guess was that the leafs would try to ride this thing out until Tavares " contract comes off the books, but if, and when the Leafs begin booking tee times Thursday morning, Shanny will walk the plank and likely take Keefe with him. Recent tirades and tantrums in-game mean somebody is on their way out of town, and it looks like Mitch just might get moved. Sadly, it wont likely be a deal to clear cap space, as most teams are near or at the cap already. Harold Ballard is sure laughing in his grave. As a Habs fan, Im laughing too. What a joke. He didnt look too upset last year. They were kicked out of the 2nd round and he had photos up having a blast on vacation. He couldnt wait to hang the skates up to travel and party. Its his excate same attitude again this year and it proves he could care less about the cup.
The worst part is when they say “we pack the stands”, really, because all those people packing the stands have been hoping and praying for the cup. I have a motivator, switch the farm team with the pro team, take all that money and give an ultimatum, no play, no pay.

What you have stated about players not really caring is true for so many players throughout the league. I've been watching and played hockey for many years, and the effort that many pro players exert, is less than minimal. I think too much dough and guaranteed contracts are to blame.
Coach needs to go. With this much talent, Ultimately it's his responsibility to get his players motivated and synergized for a playoff run.
I really hate his attitude as an outside observer. I will admit I am a Bruins fan, but I absolutely detest when other coaches blame everybody but the problem for what went wrong. I can't stand coaches who don't hold their players accountable. To be completely honest, it's a big reason why I still prefer Bruce Cassidy over Monty. Monty is a cheerleader and he never confronts his stars on mediocre play.

Signing AM to a long term 13m per year contract was a huge mistake. Even if the leafs wanted to move him, he is unmovable maybe a team like Utah is willing to pay for the flash factor for a new market that doesn't know any better. (though with that hair line he isn't really poster boy material anymore is he lol) Bottom line they overpaid Mathews and he probably going to be the leafs anchor for years to come.
60+ goals a season is flashy, but career numbers he averages 46g and only 35a a season. For a center... 35a is mid output. I know he scores goals... but this year was an anomaly frankly... it brought his average up. Players like Draisaitl is only pulling 8.5m a year for a career average 39g and 55a a year. JT Miller is also has an almost identical 55a per year career on a 8m per year long term contract. Sebastian Aho another 8.5m per year guy with 8 years in the league and averaging 31g 38a per year. AM is a 8.5, maybe you could argue 9m a year player going by the numbers. If he added some post season magic maybe that goes up but he doesn't.

Send Marner to Utah. Then he'll be the highest played player and be given a C. It's all he cares about. Get a D or a G for him.
There are coaches out there that would be an upgrade right now. Keene is suppose to be a disciple of John Tortorella. If he were, Marner would have been up in the press box. A good coach, yes. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a consistent 100 point regular season year in and year out. The problem is when playoffs start, those players need to be willing to go all in and they have not done that. That is on the coach for lack of accountability. There is a reason why Treviling is now in. Don’t be surprised if come Wednesday, the head coach is either Quenneville or Sutter or even Gallant.
I won't pretend to be a hockey expert. However, most of the time I've watched them these playoffs they've looked confused. It looks as though none of them are part of a 'bigger picture' gamewise.
Basically this proves Keefe's inability to make decisions concerning the play of, or changes to, his lineup. Keefe decided to bench a 4th liner to send a message to his 1st and 2nd lines earlier in the year (February). I think this was Kampf, a quite good penalty killer. RESULT: No improvement from lines 1and 2 , but they gave up 2 power play goals and lost 2- 1! They had situations where Domi or Bertuzzi or McMann or Robertson clicked with Matthews one game but that line would be changed for the next game. Perhaps Marner could have had it pointed out to him by the coach that he repeatedly talked the talk, but no improvement was forthcoming in his play, and no resulting actions came from the coach. The coach is there to get the optimal performance from his team, and Keefe plainly didn't or couldn't do it ! That problem is relatively easy to solve. The other problem is that 4 or 5 players chew up about 60% of the cap space. This doesn't give you much leeway to make changes and improvement elsewhere. TOVARES has provided good service since they got him from the Islanders, but he's slowing down, and could still make valuable contributions on the 3rd or 4th line, but not at a 1st or 2nd line pay scale! Also the Big4 needs to become the Big 2 with one of Matthews, Marner or Nylander being traded off with TOVARES being resigned at a reduced salary. I'd also be prepared to deal off Reilly too and obtain a defenceman who was less enthralled with hanging around the opponent's net when his team was in the offensive end. AS IT PRESENTLY STANDS, A FORWARD, QUITE OFTEN MARNER, has to fill in his position, and he's not being paid for this role, except when on the PP ! As a personal observation, I noted that Nylander was on fire until he got a healthy new contract , then seemed to fizzle out. Was he injured, or what ?
Can we all talk about how Tavares has been a non factor for the Leafs and he's paid a pretty hefty salary for scoring 45 points a season and 1 goal in last 4 playoff games? Wasn't he brought in for leadership?

Who would take marner at his salary? He has shown numerous times he isn't interested when the Going gets tough. Loafs would have to retain a lot on his contract. The timing of the end of his current contract is hoping to complcate things a lot as well.

As a Leaf fan I no longer care what they do, its like Trudeau doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
I know that it is a easy answer, but think about it. first it was management so they change it, then it was coaching so they changed it, than its no key players, so they changed it. and so on and so on. Nothing works. Once a team makes the playoffs, they need to beat in a series 4 other teams to win the Stanley Cup, let that sink in just a second. That is 1 more than the entire league back in the Early 60's, which was the last time a Toronto Maple Leaf team won a Cup. So what really needs to change is the Team! Sell Them, move them, change the home ice, Change the team colors. But just get rid of the franchise and bring in some thing completely new. How many NEW Franchises have won a Cup since the Leaf's last won? Almost all of the new franchise teams have. The last team to win was St. Louis and they were one of the first new teams to be added and even they finally won again Before the Leaf's. IT's the Franchise, Get rid of the entire Franchise. Right down to the door man , the janitor, hell even the bricks in the building. Toronto needs a old school coach who wants to win the cup and is focused on that and not worried that he will upset a player’s feelings. Players need to play with heart and a goal in mind. They make great money to play a game that so many would do a lot less but to be in the NHL my goal would not be to win a game but to win the cup. Because at the end of your career I would rather say I won the Stanley Cup playing with a great group of guys then say I won 100 games or scored 4 hatricks, or made a bunch of money that will just be spend on stuff I don’t need, but to win that cup and have that pride of accomplishment. That’s something no one can take away. The Leafs need that to drive them.
Sounds like a job for Joel Quennville, if the NHL will allow him back and then Leafs are willing to take the heat for hiring him based on the Chicago incident.

It’s fine to say certain players are not good enough, or are under performing, but what is the point of saying they don’t care - as if they would be winning if only they cared more?
Moralizing is pointless at best, and generally misses the point at worst. The objective fact with the leafs is that Management built a team that was quite good as regular season performers by just not quite good enough for playoff hockey. A bit too soft, and just not good enough defensively as the Bruins demonstrated. That’s the bottom line.
The buck stops with ownership and the people who built this team.
