“Sekha” is a Buddhist term for “practitioner”, and I feel like we have ancient roots with “Sikhi,” and why I feel immediate harmony with them whenever I meet. Their ancient stories are about protecting arahants and sanyassins. I’m grateful for that.

@@Randomhandlenamethe English translations of the SGGS although they convey the meaning don’t always have the best words used
As I’ve dismantled your argument before where u brought up God reincarnates and showed u our religions goal is to realize God even tho the word incarnate in English still carries the message properly
The word in gurmukhi is realized
That’s why u will see in the same ang literally 2 verses down saying God doesn’t take birth
It does the same when the English translation mentions the 7 seas 7 islands and 9 continents
The 7 seas are the 7 oceans/seas the 7 islands are the 7 continents and the 9 continents are 9 realms in the universe called the naukhand.
Remember this was your strongest argument about God incarnating and it got smashed last
      Time?
That’s why I asked u for ur strongest n the fact u being that up out of everything u copy pate shows u think it’s strongest
Even tho it got destroyed n u have no rebuttal
So when it mentions God that way it means the one who has realized God
Cuz as I explained before we believe only God exists the universe is an illusion goal of existence is to reach God.
Those that do surrender their ego and every action they do and say is what God tells them to do.
So speaking to them would be akin to speaking to God even tho they are not God (since everything u ask them they would ask God n then say what God replies)
Can u explain to me why it says whoever enters Kaaba is safe

One thing I found incredibly interesting from this is their belief in the sword. Many religions use violence for their own benefit. And many religious that are committed to serving others are pacifist. But Sikhs believe in helping others and defending them, even with violence. They acknowledge that violence is sometimes a necessary means to justice and that is so badass and truly representative of oneness. Violence and peace are not mutually exclusive. I’m in awe

Sikhism is NOT SEPARATE from the Vedic or the Dharma practices or the so-called Hinduism. Sikh gurus, especially the first patriarchal founder Guru Nanak, were all Vedic scholars. Origin of Sikhs and their practices is the same as many strains the Sanatana Dharma or the so-called Hinduism. These false divisions are invented by the British colonial rascals who deliberately used divide-and-rule tactics to sow seeds of separatism in the Indian subcontinent.

One thing that stuck out in my mind the most is that Sikh temples are open to ANYONE. I was advised that if I were to ever be in need of shelter or food (for example, if I were stranded in a strange country) to track down a Sikh temple so they could give me food, rest, and help finding a more permanent solution. Listed are some contradictions in Sikhism :
It teaches the contradictory concepts of God being Sargun i.e. with attributes and also Nirgun -without attributes (p287; p102).
It teaches reincarnation and yet the Guru Granth questions reincarnation(p748 M5; p1366 Kabir).
It teaches the concept of hell (p465 M1; p524 M5; p793 Ravidass; p875 Ravidass; p1383 Farid; Asa Kabirji GGS p484). And yet says hell does not exist (p969 Kabir). And it also teaches the mutually exclusive concept of karma & transmigration. If you are born again and again to pay for the sins of previous lives, why the need for hell or heaven? (p686; p156; Rag Malhar M3; Rag Gauri M5)
The Guru Granth says neither Hinduism nor Islam has the truth (p329 Kabir; p875 Namdev) and yet says that the opposite (contrary) is also true(p1350 Kabir).Guru Arjun Dev even validates the Vedas (p632 M5). And guru Govind Singh says Allah & Abhek (Ram) are the same and the Koran and Hindu scriptures are the same (Akal Ustat vs 16:86).
It claims that there is only one way to God (p920 M3; p1279 M1) and yet the Guru Granth also teaches there are many ways to God (p885 M5.7. It teaches that all humans are children of God ( p1118 M4) yet also says, not all, but only those who love Him are His children (p658 Ravidass).
The guru says that he is blind, ignorant and without enlightenment (p696 M4) yet he is called 'guru', which means one who leads from darkness to light.
It teaches the existence of Heaven (p718 Namdev; p952 M3) yet the concept of Heaven is rejected(p969 Kabir).
It teaches that the world is a dream, an illusion and not real (p740 M5; p1187 M9 p1231 M9)yet guru Nanak says it is real (p463 M1).
Guru Arjun Dev claims that he was given supernatural powers (p782 M5) yet guru Nanak, admitted to the Siddh yogis that he performed no miracles(Bhai Gurdas // 1.42/43)
The Guru Granth rejects the Vedas (p329 Kabir) yet Guru Arjun Dev validates the Vedas (p632 M5). He also quotes them as though an authority(p632 M5). Guru Nanak also quotes them as though an authority (p831 M1).The fourth guru does the same and quotes them as though an authority (p998 M4). Namdev quotes the Gita as though an authority (p874 Namdev). Ravidass quotes the sage Vyas as though an authority (p658 Ravidass).
The Guru Granth says that everything was created by the agency of millions of Brahmas (p1156 M5). Yet the one God created everything ( p1 M1).
Dhanna jat is said to have worshipped a stone and God appeared to him. Yet stone worshipping is condemned (p1160 Kabir).
Guru Granth gives no account of the creation of man and in fact says the Semitic books are false (p329 Kabir). Yet itself validates the existence of Baba Adam (p1161 Kabir).
      13. The Guru Granth teaches that God does not incarnate (p1136 M5) yet talks of the Nehklank Avatar (p1403 Swayyas).
      14. The gurus never called themselves divine, but in fact sinners in need of salvation by the Grace of God. (p156 M1; p536 M5; p261 M5; M5 p1301). Yet Swayyas sing praises and laudations to them and make them divine (p1405 Swayyas; p1407 Swayyas; p1408 Swayyas; p1409 Swayyas).
      15. It teaches monism i.e. all is one reality and God is all (p846 M5; p464 // M1; p1291 // Malar M1; p131 Majh M5. Yet says that man is not the same essence as God but only resembles Him (p754 Suhi M3).

@@Randomhandlename Do you know according to you whom quotes two verses from Gurbani and say they contradict ... You should understand , they both have different sense of meaning , a different sense of heaven and hell they deal with ... I don't want to suggest a meaning which will not suit the appropriate one , instead I will give clue with what you try to understand what it comes to mean ... The first heaven and hell is a concept of pleasure and pain , this pleasure and pain comes forth due to good and bad actions ( Karm) ..., when a human is led with the 5 major evils in Sikhi ... he gets trapped by Maya and enters the cycle of miseries whereas the steady Gurmukh remains unchanged and contemplates on the true path which indeed is true meditation and medication indeed ... This is the path to salvation or liberation from all attachments which itself is Maya ... So by attaining such a virtue one is saved and said as heaven ...

@@Randomhandlename Interesting, thank you for the post. I personally think that contradictions can be found in many religions, especially when dealing with metaphysics, foundational truths, etc. But if the practice, behaviors, and values taught are consistent, useful, and promoting goodwill among mankind, then that is enough. It’s the most important thing to me, anyways. And I personally appreciate the Sikh code of ethics just based on what I’ve heard from this video, but I am indeed completely ignorant of it othetwise so please feel free to add anything.

I have gained my connection to Sikhism through their music. I'm a massage therapist, and discovered a few artists that follow the religion. I play their music in my practice. I believe music is very healing! And their music brings much peace, love and joy to my heart! Most of my clients love it too! I've linked many of them to continuing their experience.
I'm grateful for your video, which has taught me a great deal more about the religion!

Sikkhism, hinduism, buddhism, jainism. Are not religions..
      They are Dharmas..
      Dharmas have mainly two things
      1. The rituals
      2. Spiruality (the destroyer of religions or so called belief systems...)
2nd one is the root of all these DHARMAS
Rituals can change based on era and dharmas..

As a Sikh who has been a fan of your videos for a while now, I will have to say that this is a pretty great informational in depth video of the faith from a secular perspective. The only (MINOR)problem I have is few of the pronunciations but other then that it’s good and accurate.
Edit: I have to clarify that the few of the pronunciations is a minor issue. Because some people are complaining about it in the replies.

There was a news piece many years ago I saw (possibly on "60 minutes" in the U.S.) on Sikhs. One of the questions was pronunciation... the Sikh guest for some reason did not want to directly answer the question. The interviewer asked if it was "seek" and the guest was "it's good. it's fine." I imagine it was some reticence to sounding close to the english word "sick".

Main thing to understand is that Sikhism is a Teacher/Student faith as opposed to Christianity being a Master/Slave religion. Christianity is a very simple religion - get down on our knees, swear loyalty to the master, beg for his mercy & hope for a reward(Heaven)
Remind you of someone in your country? Yep the head guy, lol
Sikhism, like Hinduism and Buddhism(Mahayana) preaches that THERE IS ONLY ONE WORLD! THIS ONE!

Putin says: "I will reward those who support & believe in me, those that do not will suffer
      Pure evil
God says: "I will reward(Heaven) those who believe & support me, the rest will suffer endlessly in Hell

I'm essentially an atheist, with a lot of pillars taken from Buddhism. This video has been eye opening and wonderful. I know, work, and live amongst a large Sikh community. Never have I ever been embraced and fed food at the most perfect time during life's journey. I work with a few Sikh elders; I set their phones up with Google Lens and set the camera function to translate any text to Punjabi when they point their camera at any physical text. I occasionally take one of them home after work when he doesn't ride his bike to work -- we have a brotherly relationship even though he doesn't speak a lick of English, and I no Punjabi. All of this culminating into an utterly gorgeous being falling for me. She brings me food, she came to me when I needed help in the middle of the night recently, she has built up so much karma. I am very lucky to live amongst Sikhs.

There is truth in all religions.
The ancient myths are full of truths.
Ancients teachings to the profane cannot be understood these teachings are written or taught orally using metaphors, allegories which the casual reader does not comprehend.
The Bible is one great example. If studied as written the reader comes away with stories of an ancient people, their genealogies & their religion. Yet, the real message mixed in the narrative is known to those students who understand the dual meanings of words...."Man, know they self & ye shall know the universe & the Gods."

The presentation is appreciable. Very well summarised. I would like to point out 1. That Gurbani is considered revealed Word 2. All human Gurus are considered different bodies but one spirit 3. "The Bani is Guru and Guru is Bani. Within Bani the Ambrosial Nectar is contained" was revealed in Guru Granth Sahib much before Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared Guru Granth Sahib as eternal Guru.

@Find Out To understand SGGS one needs to first get out pre conceived notions having its roots in Abrahamic nonsense. Thankfully, many ex muslim channels on CZcams are cleaning the dust from the minds of blind believers. There seems to be a rush of Muslims and Christians towards atheism. From here, once they start delving on Dharmic philosophies and religions of East, they will understand what seems like contradictions to many cult followers. For the benefit of readers it won't be out of place to mention that just search " ex muslim" on CZcams and you will get to know many such channels.

I've had Sikh coworkers before, and they've always been so kind and friendly. I'm from a predominantly white, Christian suburb. But an old Christian church in my neighborhood was just sold and converted to a Sikh temple, and every time I drive past and see people outside they always seem so pleasant and happy. I'm not religious, but I love my Sikh neighbors and the good vibes they bring around ❤️

Excellent introduction to the Sikh faith. Many years ago I became aware of the tradition of hospitality that Sikhs practice, while traveling in Africa and later in India. When I visited Amritsar, I stayed in a Sikh temple and ate a meal in the communal kitchen. I was privileged to visit the Golden Temple and hear the music and reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. But not until I watched this video did I really know much beyond what any tourist might understand of this faith. There is a small Sikh community in my small midwestern city and I now feel inspired to visit their gurdwara to learn more about Sikhism.

Anyone with even a basic understanding of Sikh scriptures can refute his so called “contradictions”. He’s just copy pasting a 15 year old hate post by a Muslim that’s already been debunked.

I have been blessed to have Sikh friends, and as a musician who has traveled and performed in India, the really sweet experience of playing music with some accomplished Sikh musicians. They are a pastoral community (i.e. farmers), and in India there are strong elements of clan or tribal identity - i.e. strong loyalty to extended family and local community. Sikhs take care to keep their society orderly and keep their personal spaces clean. They have a strong understanding that being spiritual does not mean neglecting worldly existence. I love that attitude of balance.

is actually wrong. This categorization comes firstly from Judaism, especially during the Roman Period, because during the roman empire religion was more flexible. But the Hanukkah and Jewish-Revolt was a categorization MADE by Jewish, by killing none-jewish people and differentiating non-jewish.
Secondly Christianity lived with other religions until the rise of Islam. So the second categorization was made by Muslims, it was the Muslims, who attacked Christians Land and for century western-Europeans (and eastern as well) fought for surviving against Muslims invasions. So this categorization by western European was caused by other communities and not by bad colonial bla bla bla

I’m ashamed to say I don’t know much about my own religion (Sikhi). I grew up in Canada and our parents, (although they follow the religion, especially mom who became baptized into it), didn’t fully submerge us as kids into the religion, etc. And back in the 80s and 90s, in Canada, there was a lot of harassment and bullying at schools for anything different other than “typical American culture”, so we hid everything about our culture and squashed in down so we wouldn’t be bullied. I regret that now, we shouldn’t have allowed the bullying to hinder our culture and in essence our own selves, but those are the things you see as adults sometimes.
I’m not super “religious” still, but I do believe that the Gurus went through enlightenment and taught us great lessons. And I am forever grateful for my religion even if I’m not “baptized” or took “Amrit” as we call it.
    Satnam Waheguru Ji 🙏🏽

As a Sikh this was definitely a well researched video, though there are a few things I want to mention. During Vaisakhi 1699 with the first Amrit Sanchar and the birth of the Panj Peyaré not only did the Sikhs take Amrit from the Guru, but afterwards he insisted that the he take Amrit from the Khalsa, and that if all the Panj Peyaré were in agreement they were allowed to overrule him. It's also important to mention that any 5 Amridhari (have taken Amrit) Sikhs are allowed to form a Panj Peyaré and may be involved in local decision making. Also during the Jōti-Jōt (meaning light into light, referring to the transferrance of Guruship) of Guru Gobind Singh, not know was Guru Granth Sahib made Guru, but so was the Khalsa Panth, building on that idea that 5 Khalsa could overrule the Guru if they disagreed with him. During the 18th century 12 Misals (or Misls) would come to rule Punjab, this is often called the Sikh confederacy, the Misals were independent Sikh states who worked together to protect Punjab from the Mughals and Afghanis. The Misals were the second attempt at using Sikh values to create a government post Guru (the first being a revolt after the death of Guru Gobind Singh lead by Banda Singh Bahadur, but within 7 years it was crushed and no internal records exist), while the Misals eventually become hereditary monarchies and go to war with eachother, essentially becoming rival kingdoms. Their beginnings are fascinating as the leaders of a Misal were often chosen based on their service to the Khalsa Panth, both in Seva (charity work) and battle, with Navab Kapur Singh having been chosen because he would take care of the shoes as people left them to enter the Gurdwara. Additionally twice a year the Sikh leaders would meet in practice called Sarbat Khalsa (meaning all the Khalsa) wherein they would represent their respective groups and make decisions on the future of the (Khalsa) Panth, with any leader having veto power. This reassembles a European Parliamentary democracy and is once again a continuation of the Sikh traditions regarding the ideals of governance, with Guru Nanak having been a critic of Babur the first Mughal Emperor, and the some of the first British accounts of Sikhs describe us as a plague known for starting rebellions wherever we go. Also in the 18th century the Sikhs would contribute to the dismantling and reorganization of the landowner systems and joining up with peasant revolts, to the point that the majority or plurality of Punjabi Sikhs today are of the peasant cast. Even during the British Raj the Sikh empire was the last of India to be conquered, and once we were, we were disproportionately part of the Indian independence movement, with even my great grandfather having been part of it and made a political prisoner several times for his peaceful protests. Anyways this is longer than I meant it to be but I thought you might find it interesting to know about the revolutionary aspects of Sikhi, and where it comes from.

@@uncommonsensewithpastormar2913 Sikhi rejects the caste system, with it having been criticized by the Gurus and it was one of the things you reject when you take Amrit. However as Sikhs would live in a primarily Hindu society most Sikhs, especially those in India do care about it. However it's much less so in the diaspora, I was born in Canada and caste has never come up for me and my dad has told me that growing up it wasn't discussed much either.

You have misinterpreted the Buddhist understanding of the material world. This could be due to mistranslation. Yay, finally! You did a pretty good job giving an overview of Sikhi. I like what you said about being lucky enough to explore it, because it feels like I won the jackpot when I realized I was a Sikh and didn't know it because I practiced Christianity for the first 45 years of my life. Sikhs do not proselytize because we believe that all religions are a path to the same destination, Truth, and encourage everyone to follow their own religion to the best of their ability. So being the fifth largest religion is based on word of mouth. I live near a gurudwara and was simply curious to know what it was because people looked very happy there and I literally just read the Wikipedia entry, read a bit of what Guru Nanak had to say, got an English translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and six months later when I visited the gurudwara they adopted me into the community. It's monotheistic but more accurate to say panentheistic. Thank you for covering this topic 🙂

I've been told many times that Sikhs are excellent business partners -- hard working, fair and true to their word. How great to hear a culture/religion strives to be good not only to their co-religionists but to everyone they come in contact with.

Namdev quotes the Gita as though an authority (p874 Namdev). Ravidass quotes the sage Vyas as though an authority (p658 Ravidass).

I’m from British Columbia and have gone to school and worked with Sikhs my whole life. I have great respect for the community and individuals. In one job, I worked with people below the poverty line and for them the daily lunch at the temple was a major resource. I know there are issues (as with any group of people), but I appreciate their presence and contributions to our society.

Raised a non-practicing Catholic, as a youngster I attended various temple events with him, but being raised in a culturally mixed household neither religion held any real importance to me or us as a family.
I found your video to be very interesting, you certainly explain concepts well. Throughout my life I've found myself interested in buddhism and was a little surprised to see some of the similarities to Sikhism.
I've always had an interest in religions, choosing to question the follower about their belief systems rather than researching, but these bite size introductions will give me the opportunity to acquaint myself with unbiased background info and facts.
    Much appreciated.

In Search for God, The God of Spirituality" All religions teach that every man has a potential to reach God, but practically they say: Only “our” religion is the true religion to realize that potential. Yes, every man can reach God but he has to reach through our way: I often hear Christians say unless you follow Jesus Christ you have no chance. But the same is said by Krishna (Hindu God): "If you surrender to me, leaving everything aside, I will take care of you, you need not worry." And the same is true about all other religions. They seem to be competing shopkeepers -- everybody is trying to sell his thing: his holy book, his messiah, his prophet, his God". But Sikh religion does not belong to this category. The message of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is universal and does not claim any monopoly in being the only door for liberation.

Fantastic presentation, Filip! As someone who is not Sikh but grew up and still lives within and has daily interaction with a very prominent Sikh community, I appreciate this wealth of information to provide a bit of understanding to what mainline Sikhs believe and practice.
Actually, one of the streets near me is named "Guru Nanak St." On the whole, I've found the Sikh community around me to be incredibly kind, courteous, and fair people and I've always enjoyed the cross-culturalism within the community.
It's good to see the comments from many Sikhs affirming that your presentation is on point
Keep up the great work and thanks for all that you do to bring understanding and knowledge to the masses!

Fortunately learned plenty from their philosophy which is close to Nature..
Hopefully thru this video more people learn and understand this open minded philosophy

I visited the Indian state of Sikkim in 2007. It shares a border with China with a road that goes up into their neighbor. Yet India is mindful that the Chinese army can come down this road. When I was there the area was protected by the BlackMountain Cat Division. These imposing soldiers are quite tall with deep burgundy uniforms and black turbans, belts and boots.
Back home a Sikh yoga teacher joined our Unity church. He thought meditation and yoga. I recall him saying the Guru said the path of the Householder is the most difficult.

I am convinced there would be a lot less conflict in the world if more people practiced Sikhism. It doesn't go out of its way to denounce other religions, but rather erases the lines between them. We all worship the same god, and the aspects of good in it.
