  • On February 6, EHang announced that the EHANG Autonomous Aerial Vehicle has achieved a series of manned flight tests carrying one and two passengers, including EHang CEO and all executives, as well as many Guangzhou government officials.
    At CES 2016, EHang officially launched the world’s very first electric AAV (Autonomous Aerial Vehicle) for low-airspace short-distance air transportation. EHang AAV has 2 seats, 8 arms and 16 propeller.
    With the core concepts of autopilot, full redundancy safety design and cluster management by intelligent command and control center, pilots are no longer necessary for a flight, while passengers only need to click the “take-off” button to fly to the selected destination.
    EHang AAV (Autonomous Aerial Vehicle) made a big step for the whole Urban Air Mobility industry by carrying up to 17 people in Vienna, April 4th, 2019.
    As crowds are pouring into the city, life speeds up, traffic gets denser, and urbanization is close to collapse. We can see more and more roads, tunnels, bridges, still don't solve the problem.
    The electrical, vertical takeoff and landing (eVTL), autopilot air taxi could be the best solution.
    EHang is a world's leading autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) technology platform company based in Guangzhou, China.

      Dennis Stockhall I know this post is 2 years old but today i read in the newspaper here in Norway that Ehang has been authorized to fly in the Norwegian airspace. It’s in a test fase. There is an investor here in Norway who is gonna start a transport company, probably a taxi drone company. Same in Germany

    Way to go guys at EHANG! I have been watching your creation from the beginning with anticipation of a manned flight for a year now, and you delivered! In this video, I can see the confidence in the company all the way through. don't get me wrong I love your competitor's craft too but for the most part, they were rushing it to the market just to get a jump on profit. and when they did get there's up in the air.....i did not see the confidence in there videos like yours, that shows me that safety, dependability, and performance was the focus in the product.

    Great work and congratulations! But how about the maximum flight distance of the 2-passenger version? It shows 8.8km in the video and about 25km(single-passenger version) at your official webside. But I wonder 8.8km will not satisfy people's expectations, especially considering of you need to keep at least 10% of remaining power for redundancy. But finally, I feel very proud of you!Greetings from Guangzhou, China.

    • @jetplaneflyer
      @jetplaneflyer Před 6 lety

      Good point. If you believe the range is 8.8Km then in practice to keep some range in reserve for 'go-arounds' or diversion then the practical range would be maybe half of that. Then when you land it takes an hour or more to re-charge it's batteries!

      Luiz Fernando have you ever been in a mosquito? No thanks. Your control in an auto rotation event has to be perfect. Their blades don't have near enough weight/ momentum to keep a wide control window. In controlled scenarios they can be ok, but in real world they become sketchy. The redundancy of this craft makes the mosquito look like a suicide wish.

      A helicopter is a completely different mission profile. This thing is autonomous, meaning it doesn't need a pilot, just a flight plan. Secondly, it's electric and rechargeable (batteries are heavy), so the flights are quite short.

      Yes, that would indeed be a good idea!
      Even for the very very rare event something might break or fail, which is not thought of before it does fail, it would be very nice to have a ballistic parachute - but it would have to be connected to the flight controller/battery power via a switch, which would stall all motors immideately once the chute has been fired!

Until we adapt our lives to a society that ACTUALLY uses technology like this, people will only die cause they all think “Its soooooo cool!!” Lol. Personal aircraft have been around for years, there’s a reason why it’s not mainstream. Yeah, it’s cool. But it also scares the living shit out of people. Including me.

    When you figure the energy density of the batteries, its probably has an endurance measured in minutes rather than hours.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes Před 6 lety +2

      Read the subtitles - 8.8km range test at 130kph.
      That's a pretty decent starting point, only to get better as battery tech improves, or with a micro turbine as power generator.

    • @Waltham1892
      @Waltham1892 Před 6 lety +1

      So, what you are saying is this thing has an endurance of just over 14 minutes at 130 Kph.
      My car (a hybrid) has an endurance of 6.5 HOURS at 105 Kph.
      Is it a starting point, yes it is. Is it, given the current level of maturity in battery and electric motor technology a promising start? No, its not.
      You'd be better off from an efficiency standpoint using a turbine. At that point, you've got a standard helicopter.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes Před 6 lety +1

      Micro Turbine as a gas generator, driving Alternators to charge the system - yup, stated that in other comments already.
      But I still think this is a pretty good starting point - it's the equivalent of where EV's were in the 80's, not where Tesla is now.

    • @Waltham1892
      @Waltham1892 Před 6 lety +1

      This is where the engineering breaks down.
      If you have to carry fuel and a turbine to charge the batteries, then you add weight and complexity (meaning even more weight) to the entire system.
      You also start racking up inefficiencies because now you have to convert chemical energy (fuel) into mechanical energy (the turbine) into electrical energy (the generator) back into chemical energy (the batteries) and finally, back into mechanical energy (the motors).
      At each stage you are going to encounter loss, so in the end you are pissing away more power than you are storing.
      You've also now made your cute little drone into a gas turbine helicopter, which is a technology we already have, sans the heavy batteries.

    • @Waltham1892
      @Waltham1892 Před 6 lety

      And maybe we can build one what goes the speed of light for one hundred million miles.
      Its a idea that, while it words, isn't commercially viable.

    • @DoctorShocktor
      @DoctorShocktor Před 6 lety +5

      Cpettan Stable? When it touches down, you don’t want the forces way up top trying to rock it over. As far as flight, the computers can stabilize it at any position if the weight is properly balanced.

    • @relicfpv5678
      @relicfpv5678 Před 6 lety

      For a multicopter, the most stable, neutral handling is achieved with the props level with the center of mass.

    • @jetplaneflyer
      @jetplaneflyer Před 6 lety

      I think that's a great point. Stability wise it really doesnt matter because these things have electronic stabilisation. But from a safety point of view it would be MUCH safer if the props were mounted above the fuselage.. Seems like a massive oversight to be honest.

    • @relicfpv5678
      @relicfpv5678 Před 6 lety +1

      It's a decision, not an oversight. Putting the propellers way above the center of mass causes the copter to act like a pendulum in sharp changes of direction, something that limits the flight envelope and results in either the motors working very hard, or the rider experiencing a roller coaster-like sensation.

    • @jetplaneflyer
      @jetplaneflyer Před 6 lety +1

      Helicopters are not pendulums, they have no fixed pivot. Their rotor is not a pivot on which they swing around. Take a look at every helicopter that flies today for proof, they dont swing around like pendulums and every single one has a rotor high up above the fuselage, even multiple rotor designs such as the Chinook. I think they went for low rotor position because it looks 'cool', it's more about grabbing publicity than any serious expectation to put this actual model into service. Before it would be commercial possibility someone needs to come up with a much better battery which is several years away yet, and I'm sure Ehang know that perfectly well.
      Check out the Volocopter VC2 for a design similar to the Ehang that has high mounted rotors that you can safely walk under yet is perfectly stable in flight.

      Yeah. not really a fan of those open rotors. Even if the aircraft had sensors to avoid those blades hitting objects, that's useless when the object just flies into a blade's path. And then it's all a matter of how many rotors can the aircraft lose before losing too much lift (assuming the software can deal with a dead rotor and asymmetrical lift).
