Michael's signature mask, is a William Shatner captain Kirk mask... in 1975, Shatner did a made for TV movie called Devils Rain. Requiring a special effect a cast negative of his face, called a life mask was made. Later used fir Kirk masks..... Halloween producer Tommy Lee Wallace with meager budget needed masks, visited a Hollywood costume shop... 3 masks... a clown mask for childhood Michael, a emmett Kelly Sad clown mask, and a Kirk mask. They cut the eyes out. Cut off the sideburns, flipped hair and painted it white

This film is the best in the franchise. The later ones are downhill to varying degrees but can still be worth watching. However, they comprise roughly four different canons with this film being the only one that all other films recognize. (Halloween 3 (1982) is entirely different, so I don't count it as part of any Michael Myers canon at all.)

    • @everettdepangher6131
      @everettdepangher6131 Před rokem +3

Correction: one of the four canons does not recognize Halloween (1978). Tyler Foster's listing is the correct one. Also, a note on your desire to have more backstory/motivation for Michael. The absence of backstory is itself key to the film. Crucially, at the beginning, Dr. Loomis and Nurse Chambers argue about whether to use the pronoun "it" or not. While Michael does seem to organize around a sexualization of Michael's sister, Michael is more of an incarnate concept than a human. As Dr. Loomis says, Michael is "purely and simply evil."

Very First memory ever was me laying belly down on the living room floor, with my family behind me on the couch.. staring at a big wood framed TV that sits on the floor and halloween was being aired for the first time on television... I was 5. You definently dont have that kind of connection with this movie,so you're not going to see it the way older horror fans see it.

I think there's far better Horror/Halloween movies around than those two, although they have their merits and I suppose are scary in parts if you've never seen them before. However, when The Exorcist was finally re-released in 1998 at the cinema as well as for home entertainment, I saw it at the cinema with my girlfriend and I'm afraid the audience just laughed at all the so called scary parts all the way through.

I like this movie, but I do think that there are other movies that probably deliver more for a contemporary audience. The double-edged sword of Halloween is that it is so elemental -- Michael has no motive, there is not much subtext or deeper context to dig into, although the movie has plenty to discuss in context of the genre and how that relates to real-world culture. I think you might enjoy some of John Carpenter's other movies more, including his horror classics The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness, and the great sci-fi action classic They Live -- one of the greatest and most ridiculously cool class satires of the 1980s. You also might like Bob Clark's classic Black Christmas (1974), which many people point to as kicking off the slasher craze before Halloween.
Halloween is the horror franchise with both the largest number of entries and the most convoluted set of timelines -- there are actually four separate canons.
    Without spoilers, these are:
    • Halloween (1978) > Halloween II (1981) > H20: Twenty Years Later (1998) > Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
    • Halloween (1978) > Halloween II (1981) (optional?) > Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) > Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) > Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
    • Halloween (1978) > Halloween (2018) > Halloween Kills (2021) > Halloween Ends (2022)
    • Halloween (2007) > Halloween II (2009)
    • Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) -- stand-alone, unconected to any of the others.
Ultimately, given you only liked this so much, it's hard to say if you need to see any more of these. I would think maybe Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4, H20, and Halloween (2018) would hit all the bases of the extended Halloween franchise, if that would be interesting to you...but even that is a pretty large undertaking of four more movies.

Michael Myers is meant to be the absence of character which is why he is called The Shape in the credits. So you're not meant to know why he kills but the sequels gave their own answers.
John Carpenter never wanted any sequels but the film was so successful that sequels were guaranteed.

    • @Dunybrook
      @Dunybrook Před 4 měsíci

That's a huge part of what made him so scary. The unknown is always going to be more frightening than having answers to your questions about him. Too bad people doing the remakes or sequels never understood that.

It's really unfortunate that Universal forced John Carpenter to make H2 as he didn't want Halloween to revolve around MM. His intention was to make Halloween as an anthology of different types of horror stories. It would've been much better for the franchise without the slasher genre. But, it was the deal he made in order to make The Thing.

  • @IdealUser

Halloween is a must watch, for cultural and historical purposes because of the influence on the genre. When I first saw it, I pretty much had your opinion but as time progressed I learned to appreciate it much more. There are several different "timelines" but if you wish to continue, I think going directly into the modern Halloween (2018) and Kills might appeal to you more.
Personally, my favorites are Halloween 2 and 4 but everyone has their own opinions. Season of the Witch (#3) is a complete stand alone unrelated to Michael Myers. The consensus is Revenge of Michael Myers, Resurrection and the Curse of Michael Myers are awful, just plain awful. Rob Zombie's remakes were ok IMO but trying to humanize Michael really misses the mark as to who and what he is.

Very nice reaction, Kaielle. I thoroughly enjoy this movie, mostly because of it's simplicity.
It's creepy and suspenseful with very little blood. I agree with you that Myers is just creepy with the way he walks and how he stands. That's all you need.
The way Myers "chases" Lori from one house to the next is very well shot and is terrifying.
The music is iconic, the breathing is affective, the victims are idiots, except for the dog and it's all fun.
If you haven't already, please watch the making of this movie. You talked about the low budget of this movie, and seeing what they did with this budget is delightful.
It was a major score for them when Donald Pleasance agreed to be in this movie. I think they originally wanted Christopher Lee to play the doctor.
I understand that you did not love this movie as much as I do, and that's fine.
Just so you know, I did not grow up with this movie, because I was a coward as a kid when it came to movies like this. I didn't see it until I was in my 20's, lol.

Loved your reaction! For me, this is the scariest movie of all time. I grew up in a neighborhood that looked very similar to the one in the film, so it felt as though Michael could leap out at me anytime. The Halloween sequels were hated by John Carpenter, except for the recent continuation trilogy: Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022). Halloween (2018) is a direct sequel to the 1978 film. Carpenter has approved of, and contributed to, this new trilogy, which disregards the other sequels (rightfully so, in my opinion, as those sequels are mediocre at best at garbage at their worst). Looking forward to more of your reactions!

Just so you know…. The Halloween series has 4 different storylines.
    1. H1 and H2
    2. H1, H2, H4, H5, H6
    3. H1, H2, H H20, H Resurrection
    4. H1, H 2018, H Kills, H Ends
The Halloween series originally meant to be a anthology which is why Halloween 3 is a different story. But when H3 was released they realized people wanted more Michael Myers.
Also it’s 2 complete remakes by a director named Rob Zombie who came out with H 2007 and H2 2009.

This movie was actually inspired an routhly based on a idea that writer and director Bob Clark head. On the Shout / Scream Factory Collector's Edition of Black Christmas 1974 non spoiler for the movie. But on the audio commentary with Bob Clark an on other bonus features Bob Clark. Talks about a conversation he had with a young John Carpenter after Black Christmas came out. In which John Carpenter asked Bob Clark if he whore to make a sequel to Black Christmas. What would it be about non spoiler for Black Christmas. I will use general wording nothing specific. Bob Clark said a psychopath would escape a mental hospital an stalk an kill some wemon this would happen in October. Then jump to 1978 John Carpenter has a movie called Halloween come out an its about a psychopath that escapes a mental hospital an stalks an kills some babysitters. In October so basically John Carpenter took the idea that Bob Clark had for a sequel to his movie Black Christmas in 1974. Then John Carpenter used that idea in his movie.
Now this movie an John Carpenter confirmed it on Two different audio commentaries. One on the Blu-ray version of Halloween an then again years later on The Shout / Scream Factory Collector's Edition of John Carpenter's original Halloween. That the original name for this movie was the babysitter murders. So it was not originally going to happen in October. But then they changed the movies name to Halloween then to make the movie fit in with. Its new October setting or background he just added some pumpkins an jack o lanterns an kids saying trick or treat an things like that. So even John Carpenter openly says this movie just takes place on Halloween by random chance. Halloween has nothing to do with the movies story plot whatsoever. Because the story plot is about a escaped psychopath that stalks an kills babysitters. That story plot has nothing to do with Halloween. It only happens on Halloween so Halloween is only a background setting.
Now I like this movie for what it is a basic slasher movie. Not bad but nothing special. But then I really like horror movies with multiple layers. Like Clive Barkers Hellraiser 1987 an Clive Barkers Nightbreed Directors cut version only 1990. Seriously do not bother with the theatrical version of Nightbreed. The movie studio how to put it nicely mutilated and butchered that movie. Into another movie completely to the point that. On the Shout / Scream Factory version of Nightbreed the Directors cut. On the audio commentary with Clive Barker an on every single bonus feature every single person. That worked on the movie onscreen and behind the scenes all said the same thing. When they seen what the movie studio did to the movie for the theatrical release version. When they where watching it they where like WTF is this movie. Its not the movie that was in the script or screenplay an it was not the movie we made. So the Directors cut of Nightbreed is the only way to go with that movie.

A lot of people criticize Laurie hiding in the closet, but they miss that she opens the window first to try and make Michael think she went out; a decent attempt at diversion. I also must say that fighting back with an untangled wire hanger to the eye is quick thinking.

I agree with your rating of the movie and your review of it. Personally, I've never been a fan of slasher films and I also found this one a bit slow paced and a little boring at times though it is suspenseful. It is, however, an important film within the genre as it established nearly all of the tropes and the structure that later slasher films built from so, for that reason alone, I can appreciate it for that. It's also a John Carpenter film and Carpenter is one of the godfathers of modern horror. Carpenter's films like this one and others like The Thing, which I highly recommend, helped to popularize the genre and take it more mainstream.
As far as other films in the Halloween franchise, there are the direct sequels, of course. Halloween 2 picks up immediately after the first film and is a little more action oriented than the first. It also introduces an important twist that became a staple of the franchise for most of its run. You might also want to watch Rob Zombie's 2007 remake/reimagining of Halloween to see a more modern take on it. Zombie returned in 2009 to direct a sequel to his 2007 version. You could conceivably watch the original Halloween and Halloween 2 and then watch the Rob Zombie remakes/reimaginings from 2007 and 2009 and do a comparison between them to see which you like best.
I'm looking forward to seeing your Psycho reaction! If you like suspense, you'll love it.

This is my favorite movie of all time. So, if you’re going to rewatch this movie down the road, here are some things for perspective that may make you view it in a different light at that time.
The original title of the movie was supposed to be “The Babysitter Murders” because the premise was merely an escaped mental patient with a blood lust. Laurie caught his eye when she dropped the key off to his childhood home, and stalked her and killed her friends. He has no motive other than he’s the personification of evil. This is why you never get a reason why he kills, but this is also why he can’t die…
He cannot die because he is the personification of evil. In the credits, he is billed as “the shape” and not Michael Myers. This is intentional and because Michael Myers is merely the vehicle through which the evil lives, travels, and acts out in. You cannot kill evil. You cannot predict evil. We do not know the origins of evil. This is also why at the end of the movie, it cuts to all the primary scenes of the film with just his breathing in the background. Because evil surrounds us at all times whether we know it or not.
This is a psychological horror more than a slasher. While it did spawn much of the slasher tropes and is one of the progenitors of the genre, there is no blood in the entire movie (you’ll catch that on the rewatch) and it’s more predicated on creepiness, uneasiness, and discomfort of his constant stalking, POV, breathing, and voyeurism. It’s meant to make you understand that this guy could be anybody, maybe even someone you know, and that these people exist everywhere. Imagine being a high school girl who babysat on weekends when this came out.
This is merely supposed to show various perspectives of a psychotic mental patient, whose body encapsulates evil in its purest form, who becomes infatuated with a random stranger, decides to stalk and kill her friends with absolutely no motive. THAT is the scary part because how many true crime docuseries do you need to see to know that stuff like that actually happens.
Some horror movies make you question morality. Some horror movies make you question the possibility of the devil and possession. Some make you question the supernatural and spiritual realm. This horror movie makes you question how a seemingly normal kid could randomly snap and kill people for no reason other than an unexplained blood lust. And it never gives you an answer, which is the scary part. This movie is also supposed to make you look over your shoulder when you go outside at night right after you watch it.
