  • Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, have called on the newly installed traditional rulers to uphold the principles of honesty and selfless service in their various communities.
Ikpeazu spoke at the presentation of staff of office to 16 traditional rulers, selected by their various autonomous communities and screened by the government.
The governor advised the royal fathers against working "at cross purposes" with government and promised to support them if they remain loyal.
"As chief security officers of your communities, traditional rulers ought to take security seriously and give out useful information to the government about bad eggs in their midst”, he said.
According to him, each traditional ruler was expected to rule their subjects with the fear of God and give support to programmes that yield socio-economic benefit to the people.
Ikpeazu hoped that their rule would bring peace, progress and development in their communities, pointing out that they would not achieve anything if rancour and acrimony reared their ugly heads.
Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who spoke, said that traditional rulers were presented by their communities and screened by the government.
Ogbonnaya said that the traditional rulers were installed according to the customary laws of the state.
Responding on behalf of other traditional rulers, Chief Godwin Nwakanma, thanked the governor for recognising them and pledged to maintain peace and security in their various domains.
