This was an amazing live performance recorded at the BBC Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham in December 1978. The backing singers were the Jordanaires, formerly the backing singers with Elvis Presley. The pedal steel guitarist came with Don McLean and the orchestra were players from the BBC Midland Radio Orchestra conducted by Norrie Paramor. The programme was called Don McLean and Friends in Concert.
I think this has to be the best coordination of voice, chorus and musical arrangements EVER. And many thanks for the informations about the Jordanairs and the BBC Midland Radio Orchestra by Norrie Paramor, because I didn't know, but those parts are the song are ALWAYS forgotten, (even by people who love this song), but are an absolute MASTERPIECE
This is a very fine karaoke version. Sings the basic melody of the song very well, the whole way through. Hit's that last 'crying' with a roar. But let's not get carried away. I just listened to Roy Orbison singing it, and in the first line he's thrown in all these little variations that are just incredible.
There are certain songs sung by certain voices that are SO good they're an absolute turn on and for me Don McLeans voice singing this is EXACTLY that's!!! Especially the last minute of the song 💕
I had read in a Roy Orbison interview that he really hated this version. I was always puzzled by that, until it occurred to me that, deep down, Roy realized that this was actually an even better version than his original. The master had been bested.
Just stop it. This is a really nice cover from a talented singer but it is not a better version - not even close - than the Roy Orbison original . Oh and Roy wrote it too!
@@johnpod You "Just stop it". If you're going to say I'm wrong, provide supporting information. And what exactly does "Oh and Roy wrote it too" prove? Are you saying Badfinger's "originally written" version of "Without You" is better than Harry Nilsson's? Or, Kris Kristofferson's originally written version of "Me and Bobby McGee" was better than Janis Joplin? Or Otis Redding's originally written version of "Respect" is better than Aretha Franklin's?

'CRYING' IS A DON MCLEAN'S SONG, MR. ROY; IT WAS MADE FOR HIM AND NOT FOR YOU.
@Baz
Don greatly improved the song and got it to No.1
It’s a great version of this song. But, even Don McClean would admit it is a Roy Orbison song.
Meu amado Don, você me faz chorar❤❤
Love him so much
Expetacular !!!

Parabéns pela edição!
Happy 76th birthday this week 🧁🍨🍧🍦🥧!
Que música linda....
Great job don but Roy is still the king cause he never struggled reaching the high notes, you did as you had to finish in falsetto, still well done.
This emotional performance of his is incredible - and greatly appreciated. A timeless classic. - Hunter
This is my favorite version of this song .you feel the emotion in so beautiful
Roy Orbison said it was very special
I'm so gonna dance to this at my wedding I don't care if it's sad its goddamn beautiful🥲❤
Holy shit
👍💕🇨🇦
There's actually a down vote on this.
only 3 people can sing this epic song... Roy Orbison, Don McLean and Raul Malo
i would definitely add kd lang to that list
@@mrloz001 I think KD Lang blows this song out of the park. She has the best version out there.
