Tubeless MTB Tire Maintenance | How To Inspect Tires and Replace Sealant

  • Take a look inside the tires of my Santa Cruz Hightower LT as it gets a much needed MTB tubeless sealant refresh after more than a year of complete neglect. I recently rode Skypark in Santa's Village near Lake Arrowhead in California, where I realized I'd never done any maintenance on my tires. Never flatted, and never had any issues after nearly 1000 miles.
    In this video, I open up the tires for the first time to investigate what the inside of tubeless tires look like after a full year of riding. I also strip down the wheels and weigh the Maxxis Minion DHR II tires as well as the SRAM NX cassette, wheels and rotors individually (just in case I want to do some upgrades later). I also get to use my new Topeak Joe Blow Booster Pump for the very first time.
    Support the channel and pick up some stickers (and Future Shock spacers if you need them).
    Thanks!!

    I actually let the air out, took out the valve core, then used a syringe to pull out any old sealant, then re-injected new sealant through the open core. This way I don’t have to break the bead.

    Ive got a small leak from a sand spur after 1 Year of buying my bike and I used Elmers glue for a little fix so far, its worked But I'm definitely going to have to replace the sealant

    Dude, my tires had sealeant for less than 6 months and it was almost all dried out! Pain in the ass to take it off, for real 🫠

    Thanks for the video. I upgraded my wheel to tubeless in January 2022. Never flat for 6mos now. I noticed something like oil bleeding on my wheel, the same thing as what you have shown as the puncture. I guess I can still postpone the refilling of the sealant since yours lasted for 2 years before refilling it.

      @@TheBikeSauce Haha agree. But at least I know that I can still safely ride my bike without worrying if sealant is already dried up or not.

    Great video! I have found myself in the same dilemma: bike favoritism = bike neglect when N+1 begins to creep in! But the upside is the MTB is now getting a full tire cleaning and inspection

      Haha. I believe the law states the newest bike must be given first priority for the first few months

    I don’t know if my Topeak pump was the older or newer version but the head sucked - started leaking after a few months of use. Replaced it with the Silca head and it’s significantly better and also easier to use.

    Good video - thanks for the info. I recently started riding tubeless and it's time for me to check the sealant. Please explain the need for 160# of pressure. Is that to seat the tire and did you release that pressure to ride? What pressure are you riding at? Thanks!

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před 2 lety +1

      160 psi goes in the booster pump pressure vessel. When released into the tire, it’s meant to seat the bead, but it will never inflate the tire to 160. On these dhr 2s, I used to run about 22-24psi (I’m 155lbs)

    Hola! Hi !
    I was looking for a tubeless video and how to do it (I ran out of sealant too). But you skipped the part that shows how to put the sealant. If you had included that part, it would be awesome for me. Anyway, thanks buddy. I'll check out your channel, this the first time watching one of your videos!

      Sorry! Most simply pour sealant into the tire when one side of the tire bead is on the rim. I actually prefer to use a sealant injector and insert the sealant through the valve (core removed) after I fully seat the tires beads.

    Dude can you explain what do you use to clean the old sealant from rim and tire?. I know that you get rid of it but what solvent if any did you use etc....thank you!

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před 3 lety +4

      A bit of Goo gone is relatively mild and works well, and I usually wipe off the goo gone with isopropyl alcohol afterwards.

    What I'd like to know is what type of sealant looks like that still after two years !? I was not expecting liquid of any kind and I didn't see anything like I've seen when using Stan's or Orange. What is that stuff ?

    is it necessary to add sealer inside the tire? Im an automotive technician and seeing "fix-a-flat" inside a tire eats me up.

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před 3 lety +2

      It’ll seal up punctures as you ride so it’a pretty big plus. You can run tubeless dry, but not recommended

    My only comment is that while mounting and reseeding the tire, you never mentioned the valve! And why is it that everyone assumes you have a presta valvle?

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před 2 lety

      Sorry, I didn’t actually remove the valve stem. Presta is pretty standard on most bikes, except lower end bikes and kids bikes

    Can i tubeless a non tubeless ready maxxis tire?

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před 3 lety

      I’ve seen it done on mtb tires, but it’s not a good idea bc the bread is different and more prone to stretching, which can potentially blow off the rim. More of an issue on road tires for sure. Best recommendation is to spring for a set of tubeless tires
