    You are 101% correct on your ideas and reasons about the DR650. After 50 yrs of riding, owning BMW gs's, and all manner of other bikes, my DR650 is probably the best bike I have ever owned. If you have not done it, the procycle jet kit is great!. for safety... bright yellow lights on fork legs and skene P3 brake lights. For the front the Clearwater Darlas' are the best. Sub'd and T-Up! Well done!

    I purchased my first DR650 in 1997. I lived on a farm in Iowa at the time. I actually chased down a Jackrabbit in open Corn Field with it just before planting season. That mellow soil had to be a workout for it. Probably would've burned motor up on a lesser bike. Took me 30 minutes of some very hard riding to keep the Jackrabbit away from fence lines in 80 acre field. In the end I was able to jump off bike and catch rabbit on foot. Him and I were both exhausted. Size of a small dog. I caught the Jackrabbit, removed a huge Tick on his ear, then let him go. Only non-stock part of the bike were the tires. I had some nobby tires on it. Anyway, I was pretty impressed with that low end torque. I later took it on some tough logging trails in Badlands of South Dakota...then on to college. It was a bulletproof beast. I never kept up on maintenance and it didn't seem to care. Can't tell you how many times I submerged the bike crossing streams. Not sure some of these modern bikes would be so forgiving. Anyway, thanks for the video. Brought back some great memories!!

      Dude! I love the story you’ve got attached to this bike. It may soon become my only bike because it’s the only one that I want to ride anymore. My vrod and voyager have become garage ornaments. Best thing about the DR offroad is that it will take a licking. I have thrashed mine to hell and back (flipped it, dropped it off a ledge, tumbled down a steep rut). Broke the mirrors, broke a blinker, broke a passenger footpeg..But apart from that.. no damage to the actual frame or engine. it works butter smooth like the day I bought it. Engine, frame, and fuel efficiency are unbeatable. This DR is my forever bike.

      @@2wheels.are.better.than4 Hey Rob! Love the GS but the weather hasn't allowed for much riding lately. No dual sport in the stable at the moment. GSA for mostly street, 300 2T for the OHV park. I like the DR650 as a platform to turn into what you want.
      For a one bike solution the T7 checks a lot of boxes. Very fun and capable right off the showroom floor and Yamaha reliability. If I could only have one bike, it would be the DR650, but I'm not good enough to wrangle the T7 on more than fire roads. It can certainly be done with a skilled rider. I have a '21 (the white version) that I bought new. This is the second DR650 I've had, the first one I bought new in '05 and should have kept it, but that's ok I have another one now. Anyway, this '21 model has the PAIR valve emissions thing on it, and I see that yours does too. I bought a block off kit and removed that entire thing. It really helps the bike run smoother and stronger with that junk removed. I've read it makes no difference, but it does! Plus that PAIR valve is noisy when the engine is running, and I've seen several posts on forums of guys thinking their engine was knocking/making noise, when in fact it's just the PAIR valve making that noise. The bike is much quieter with it removed.

    I really recommend getting some Cogent DDCs along with the heavier springs for the forks, especially if you're already revalving the shock too. They're only like $200 and completely change the feel of the front of the bike. Handles better on the road, has way less dive under braking, and can be beat on off road and allows you to maintain control.

    Great video - had a 2017 DR650, loved it, zero problems, loved the torque and the gearing, especially the long 4th gear you can cruise around on, without much shifting required. Junk the stock tires after you run it in, lots of better choices out there - had Heidenau K60 Scout 50/50 tires on it, very nice, some say not as good in the wet, had a D606 Dunlop after that, better on trails. The seat sucks as you mentioned - I went with the Sargent seat and was happy. I sold it after 4 years and went to the DRZ400, better suspension, lighter and more agile on the trails, but not the nice torque of the DR650 and the DRZ400 gearing is weird, close together and runs higher revs if you do highway/60mph plus. Miss the DR650 - nice video and safe riding. This bike is a huge seller in Australia and NZ and Canada. Cheers, Ronny

    Good review on the bike I currently have an xt250 and I'm considering buying a dr650 the only concern I have is that I'm a small Rider at 5 ft 5 130 lb. I think it is one of the best Dual Purpose bikes all around very reliable. You mentioned in the video people shouldn't stay away from this bike because it's carbureted that's actually one of my concerns because where I live it gets really cold and I've had carbureted bikes before and they don't start well in the cold weather the XT I have right now is fuel-injected and I love it. Anyways I'm going to stop at my local dealer soon and have a chat with them.

      Thanks for taking the time to check it out. The bike factory lowering and a low seat concepts seat should suit you well. You’ll be able to keep up with bigger adv bikes on longer rides, but still plenty nimble off-road. Some crash bars might make pick ups easier too.
      #1 thing to remember is to never mess with the carb from the factory and you’ll be fine. A lot of people freak out about the lean jetting, hot exhaust, but it’s intended to be that way.. I only have to choke the bike for about 30 seconds, then flick it off at the first stop.

      I honestly think Dual Sport bikes in general are the best bikes to start on because of their versatility. I think if you’re careful, the DR650 is fine. Also, if you’re over 200lbs, you may want the dr650 torque. If you’re under 5,10, it comes with lowering links from Suzuki. You can also get a low “seat concepts” seat from procycle. A few other bikes I strongly recommend are the KLX300, CRF300, and XT250. You can camp, commute, trail ride on all of these. They’re tall on the road as well, so you’re visible to traffic. Second would be some fat handlebars and bark buster hand guards, the original bars bend real easy, something like Protaper fat bars are much stronger.

    I have a 2005 and a 2014 models that have served me well over the years and I have a Yamaha T7, the DR is my preferred ride.

      I’m glad to hear your opinion on the T7 because it certainly has my interest as part of the bikes in the new middleweight segment. I definitely am going to be ditching that screen though for trail days! I’m terrified of it becoming a guillotine! I’m also looking for a good set of 1 1/8 bars to go with the rox anti-vibe risers I have. Thanks for the other recommendations too! IMS is on the radar for tank options. I do have to say this bike (because of the aftermarket) makes it really hard to want much else… normally I’m wanting a new bike every year lol.

    Hi thanks for the review. I was just wondering what bike you would recommend for my type of riding. I want to ride 75% road and 25% dirt. I want to ride on back country roads 60-70mph most of the time. I was thinking about buying a new dr650 or drz400. I just dont know whats the better option. The 400 seems like more of a “real dirtbike” than the 650. But the 650 seems to handle higher speeds much nicer but kinda sucks offroad.

    • @ComfyDadShoes
      @ComfyDadShoes  Před rokem +1

      I don’t think you can go wrong either way. I would base the choice off where you’re spending the most time, which sounds like the road. I can’t give the best guidance regarding the drz. However, you can mod the DR to be. very capable off-road while still being a better road bike than the DRZ400. My buddy that owns a drz400sm says he wished it was more stable in wind and held speed better on the highways. Hope that helps… also, sit on both bikes before deciding! Would love to hear what you get

    • @JeremyDovin
      @JeremyDovin Před rokem

      I already sat on both bikes. Im leaning towards the dr650. The drz400 looks a little bit better especially the sm model but Im concerned about the power on the highway. The dr would handle highway speeds just fine unlike the drz. You wont be reving the dr out in 5th gear compared to the drz’s 5th gear. It seems better value for your money getting the dr650 instead of the drz400.

    • @ComfyDadShoes
      @ComfyDadShoes  Před rokem

      @@JeremyDovin I’m pretty biased, but Iwent with the DR. If you want more power from the drz, you won’t be able to get it as easy. That’s important to me bc I’m 235lbs. You can also lighten the DR some by replacing the muffler with a DG. Both bikes are geared tall, so you’ll have to change that anyway for serious trails. Also, just knowing I’d be cruising at 60-70, I’d take the DR because that motor is better suited to handle it.

    • @JeremyDovin
      @JeremyDovin Před rokem +1

      I would much rather pay $100 less for a 650cc motor than to pay $100 more for a 400cc motor. I am 5”8 and 130lbs but want that “snap” when you twist the throttle. Not neck snapping like a zx10r but fairly fast compared to lets say a crf300l. I feel as if the efi 6 speed 300s like the klx300 or crf300l are underpowered and will leave you disappointed as far as power goes. Everything else they seem solid.

    I'm 5"8 and 207 pounds. I'm trying to decide between the DR650 and the CRF 300l for mostly trail riding and motocamping. I'd used it for driving around town too of course. Which would you recommend for me?

    • @ComfyDadShoes
      @ComfyDadShoes  Před rokem +1

      My quick answer based on your info = CRF300
      However, my reasons for recommending the DR would be several.
      You may be disappointed with the 300’s power after only a few months.
      The frame on the DR650 will take loads more punishment and carry more gear.
      Seat concepts low seat plus factory lowering links would make the DR the perfect powerhouse for you at 5’8. Plus 208 is pretty stout for the 300.
      Either bike especially the CRF will need stiffer springs.
      The Honda has better tires from the factory but the difference is little.
      Either way, you can’t go wrong if you’re choosing any dualsport!

    • @mjohnson6703
      @mjohnson6703 Před rokem

      @@ComfyDadShoes Do you think the DR650 would work okay for an occasional 2 up ride just in town? I imagine the CR300l would not have the weight capacity for that unless it is two very light people.

      No, not at all, it's actually a pretty big bike. His bike looks short because of the large windshield and rear box. I'm 5'11" 180lbs and it's a perfect fit for me. Some taller or larger guys get the lower foot pegs and bar risers for more room, which is easy to do if you want a little more space. It's never going to feel stretched out like a cruiser though.

      In this particular class of bikes, I would say the Suzuki engine. It is oil cooled and comes with a Cush drive. Two things that are better for longevity. The best engine, single cylinder, for Yamaha would be in the wr250r, which has to work harder to perform the same. All are superb engines, but in this case, definitely Suzuki for me.
