Bikepacking & Wild Camping, Visiting 3 Neolithic Long Barrows Had to get rescued, Illness!!

  • I had planned on cycling to visit four Neolithic long barrows on this adventure but could only manage 3 and a total distance of around 80 miles cycled.
    The barrows we visited were Waylands Smithy, West Kennet and Stoney littleton, all impressive structures in their own ways.
    I rode my new gravel bike a PlanetX Tempest which is a beautiful machine but I am going to have to make some changes and fit a suspension seat post and a more comfortable saddle. The old body can't take the beating it once did I'm afraid.
    I picked up a tummy bug and have been battling a longer term infection but am starting to feel a lot better after some rest. Sometimes it is good to rest which is something I don't do often enough!
    rescued by my good friend Dickie:)

    Unfortunately I couldn't complete the planned route due to feeling unwell. Turns out I picked up a tummy bug and all that goes with it and an uncomfortable saddle added to things which was causing me further issues'! I shall be swapping out the seatpost for a suspension seat post as my lower back took a hammering especially on the canal towpath and I'll also be changing the saddle for something more comfortable probably an SMP.
    Visiting the barrows is always a delight, they are a lasting legacy to this country's Neolithic past despite the fact that most have been rifled through. Stoney Littleton was a new barrow for me to see and of the three it goes back further than the others around 15 meters with 6 transept chambers, You have to stoop to get in though.

    Sandy - you have to be so careful. I over trained when I was 29 and ended up with an infection that not only put me out of work for three months it also resulted me in hospital. I had to be looked after by a consultant who told me that had I not seen him after lying in bed ill with the runs for weeks he would “ have needed to revive me “ . The signs are always there but they can be mistaken for nothing and followed by an urge to do more cycling . You should rest and drink clean water ( not tap water and stop using that water filter - remember that it will not filter out everything like some chemicals) for a number of weeks
    I thought how ill you looked Sandy - so force yourself to rest even if you start to feel ok give it plenty of time for your body to recover
    Best wishes Rob

      Simon, I had no alternative but to bail on this one, I couldn't have gone much further. When I got home I went straight to bed but soon afterwards all hell let loose, heavy sweats, diarrhea and vomiting and this morning at 3 AM I was drenched in sweat. Fell back to sleep and woke at 6AM, had a shower and took my dogs for a walk and I'm almost back to full health again now......

    Advice for saddles. Extra padding is not the way to more comfort. It will put pressure on places you don't want.
    Look tor one that fits your "seat bones." They vary in width. Once I found my width it made a night and day difference!

A wise decision, you HAVE to listen to your body. To carry on would have been foolish. Even though you say you are much better now, give yourself extra time to get over it properly and completely. I have a Suntour stem on my MTB, I'd love a Redshift but they are a bit more pricey so will probably go with another Suntour for the Tempest plus a different saddle probably another SMP as I got on OK with that saddle on the MTB

We really are lucky to have such a green & pleasant landscape to enjoy. Love new bike, don’t ever apologise for not making it. I couldn’t have done it at my age as I’m not fit enough. Do you think you caught a bug from the river water? DO take it easy & get some R&R. I wish you a speedy recovery from the bugs you currently have, I’m in the throws of this 100 days cough. It’s blasted nuisance. All the best - Andy

      Hi Andy, I have no idea where the tummy upset came from, don't think it was from the river as that water was taken close to the source and I was starting to feel queasy before I got to that point. Hope you soon feel better. I'm a lot better now:)

    Great video, even when you didnt complete it! I once adjusted my saddle by no more than 1cm and after an hours ride I was in agony and couldnt walk properly for days! I prefer a rock hard saddle like the Brooks B17, but ride a couple of road bikes with "knife edge" fizzik saddles and never have a problem.

    I had a Tempest on loan from a friend last year for a few months. I thought it was great and it got up hills better than any other bike I've had. I hope you'll have a lot of fun with it Sandy but do get some decent rest for a while now. Look after yourself a bit and, as others have said, you're not 30 anymore. Neither am I 😁 JBJ ...-.-

      Hahaa JBJ Rupert. I shall be on the QSD net tomorrow with Rich, why don't you look in, it would be great to hear you on the key again.
      I'm very impressed with the new bike and yes it's good on the hills. I reckon even though I was feeling rough I could have completed the journey no probs as my legs were not tired at all but my but I was suffering from a touch of prostatitis. On my other bike (Bootzipper) I have a suspension seat post and SMP saddle, I think I may have to get the same setup for the gravel bike then I should be good for long days in the saddle.
      Feeling much better today.

    Great to see you and Dave our touring again, Sandy. Both bikes look amazing too, really lovely machines. I love the upgrades Dave has done on his Decathlon bike which are similar in many ways to what I have done with my 5 year old Trek FX2 which I am soon to ride the John Muir Way on all being well.
    I have also just purchased and upgraded a drop bar gravel bike (a Genesis CDA 10) for similar reason s as to why you have purchased the new PX bike although it's not gonna be as light as your machine.
    Anyhow, fantastic video guys, I've been waiting for you to post a new adventure together and have really enjoyed this record of your trip 👍🚲 keep up the excellent work and best wishes to you both 👍
    BTW, what bags are those new front bags on Dave's bike? I think I need a pair of those myself! 👍

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure what Daves front bags are but I know he brought them on Amazon. It's nice having a selection of bikes to ride, the lighter weight gravel bike will be my goto bike for these kind of summer rides where the going isn't too extreme, I've added some weight to the bike though as I have now fitted a suspension seat post and SMP saddle. I can't take all the shocks like I used to

    Best wishes for a speedy recovery Sandy - Broadly agree with most commentators except about using your motor bike - Do you agree that motorbikes chew up the trails and bridal ways just as bad as a 4x4 atv - love your content, makes me home sick, my home town is Newbury, now I live in the Philippines. I'm 70 and still ride my Giant Fathom hard tail. No car or motorbike.

      Hi David
      I love both cycles and motorcycles, perhaps for me the bicycle offers more freedom. I would say that horses and 4X4 vehicles are the greatest chewer uppers buy yes of course a motorcycle will do more damage than a bicycle.
      Don't forget though that these trails have been here for perhaps ten thousand years and we can still ride along them.

    When you've rested and feel better , friends and I have got the train to Bath with our bikes (front or back for bikes) then cycled along Kennet and Avon canal towards Marlborough way. You can stop along the way for coffee ,food. We have got off at honeystreet and also toward Marlborough then through savernake to chiseldon via old rail line. 50 miles plus maybe.

    Ahh now it makes sense , mini adventures are the way forward Sandy. We ain’t young bucks anymore , need to slow down man and more of a chilled pace. A great trip nonetheless but heat and hills no good for any man. On my longer rides we always have a train station relatively close by in case of bail outs , but you had your own rescue sorted . Just changed my saddle again , like you can’t seem to find the right one 😂😂😂 Atb Dave

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Dave, I've struggled when hiking finding decent footware that didn't cause me blisters and now cycling the Achilles heel is the bloody saddle! The best one I've tried sofar is the SMP with the large cutout so I'm probably going to buy another for the tempest together with a suspension seat post. My legs were fins, I could have cycled on all day if needed but it was mostly the saddle discomfort that got me (Prostatitis) just starting to get better now!!
