    Hi, Tyler. I found a way around all those broken graphite pencils, I use Lead Holders, and clutch/ mechanical pencils.
    Lead holders are awesome because your pencil never changes, you just put in new leads, and they have a complete range of graphite, all the HB's and even the harder F's.
    I love art and I believe that everybody brings something new to the table.
    Some people starting out should use printer paper because no one is afraid to mess up on a sheet of printer paper.
    I would only recommend its use for preliminary sketches. I also look putty rubbers/ Kneadable Putty Erasers. Peace and thank you for all your videos and the work you put into them. Peace.

    I like using mechanical pencils, and I think I've bought something like eight models over the years. It all comes down to personal preference. I don't use anything now except Pentel pencils, Primarily the classic P200 pencils, and now the Graph Gear 1000 pencils. I've completely ditched using the window that tells you what grade of lead is in the pencil. After using them for a time, I just quit. I found they just aren't necessary for me, and they were much more of a bother than a help.
    I have a set of pencils that goes from 9H to 14B. I don't use most of them, so I replace many with more HB, 2B and 4B which I use most often. But I do occasional use much softer pencils. I just don't use them with pressure. Layering and light blending does the trick. For small areas of very black, I use a Prismacolor black pencil. Sometimes I even use ink. Both of these give an intense, deep black that I can't get any other way.
    As for your writing box, I love it. I have a box, too, The inside compartment on mind measures a hair over twelve inches long, five and a half inches wide, and three inches deep. My wife's grandfather made it during the great depression. I also have a small knife he made from a broken pocketknife. It sharpened pencils perfectly. Times were tough, so people made what they needed. He made this box to hold small tools, screws, etc. He was a carpenter, so the box is very well made. It's perfeect as an office drawing box.
    As for paper, that's my specialty and I wouldn't say good sketchbooks have anything like printer paper in them. The composition is completely different. Though I've fund that some type of printer paper work exceptionally well as drawing paper. There are not onlt different weights of printer paper, there are also many, many different types of paper. You can get it in every shade, every type of tooth, made from everything from linen to cotton to bamboo, to wood pulp. It's only the cheap wood pulp paer that is bad for pretty much everything except running through a printer.
    Really, there are printer papers every bit as good, or better, than most drawing paper. I spent time working in a paper mill, and we made several types of paper aside from wood pulp. Some of the printer paper we made was fantastic, but very few artists even look at paper designed to be used in a printer. I think this is a big mistake.
    Paper is about as personal choice as anything is. I like shaded paper, I like paper with some tooth, but I love bright white, extremely smooth paper, as well. I believe paper selection should be based on what you're drawing. My two favorite papers for drawing are Strathmore Bristol Smooth, and Strathmore Bristol vellum. Waterford also makes wonderful paper. But I stick to Strathmore for most things. But I use a LOT of sketchbooks, and a lot of higher end printer paper, some of which is fantastic.
    I just don't see the need to worry about it for sketching. Sketching paper is just that. It's made for sketching, not for detailed, final drawings. It seems that 100gsm is about the standard for sketching paper, and I think this is more than good enough. Especially for beginners, but also for professionals. I guess it depends on how you define "sketching" and "drawing". I say go by what it says on the cover of the book. If it says sketching paper, then use it for sketching. If you want to actually draw, get something better. Really, I go through sketchbooks so fast that it seems they just vanish. I couldn't begin to afford this much high quality drawing paper. Neither can most beginners.
    But it really is about income level, personal choice, and using whatever it is you like. I was given several reams of HP Premium 32lb LaserJet paper about four years ago. It's as smooth as glass, but I love sketching AND drawing on it. Glassy smooth paper just takes a bit different technique than paper with tooth, but for some types of drawing I find it's better because of the smoothness. I also have three reams of one hundred percent cotton "parchment" printer paper that is fantastic for drawing. Linen is also an interesting drawing experience. Just use whatever you like.

    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    I have seen that video by mark and I agree with him to an extent and he mentioned this as well. When it comes to pencils, there really aren't any bad pencil brands. They are all cheap so I go with just go with what I am used to. When you start getting into paint, there is a HUGE difference between the craft grade and the high quality grade. But that difference may not be enough to some to warrant buying better materials.Everyone makes the best from what they have. Quality can help but not always

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    It sounds to me that you are fine. If others say you are doing great work then there is no need to worry about the materials that you don't have. You can always get them later down the line but do what you can with what you can.

    Hey David! I always get a kick out of how large of an audience I can reach with my videos. I am glad that you found my channel and that you enjoy my work. It makes me happy and gives me a purpose here. Oil pastels will always be one of my favorite mediums but I have been sticking with the pencil tutorials because it gets a better reaction than the tutorials done with color. It is easier for everyone to follow since they don't really need to purchase anything. Thanks for posting!!!

  • @TylersArtShack

    I bought most of mine in store. I have a Blick Art Materials local where I get most of them. You can always get them from their website as well. There is also Jerrys Artarama I think. There are a few but those are the 2 that I usually end up getting stuff from. I have both those stores ear me. But pencil supplies can also be found at craft stores like Micheal's and AC Moore. They won't have anywhere as large as a selection and tend to cost more.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    That is really up for you to decide. I have my preferences that I have developed over the years of trying out many different brands of pencils. Brands like Derwent, Faber Castell, and Staedtler are just a few of the good brands that exist among about a dozen more. Pencils differ slightly in performance from brand to brand but not to the amount that would warrant obtaining one brand over another. See if you have anything local to you where you can easily obtain some supplies and see what you like

    Rose, if you mean cost, I put together a list on the Blick site which includes box, pencils, blenders, erasers, sharpener, and the large drawing book. With shipping included, it came to less than $50. You could even trim it a bit more than that; but, I added a couple of personal preferences: eraser pen refills, and a cleaning pad. (The latter I learned to appreciate from time spent as a manual draftsman, years ago.) Cheaper than dinner for two and greater long-term enjoyment. :) Good luck! Jim

  • @TylersArtShack

    I use an HB or 2H to create the grid. I wouldn't use a clay modeling tool because those creases will show up when you shade in the drawing. Try to keep those lines light so that they can easily be erased. Great drawing by the way.

    You can use whatever materials that you like. These are just the supplies that I have gotten used to using over the years. I have always found it difficult to just use a single pencil for an entire drawing. You have to be pretty good at varying the pressure on the pencil to get different tone out of it. The main thing is that you want contrast within a drawing to tell between one object and another. It also helps with giving the drawing a mood, or overall impression. Using multiple pencils helps

    Charcoal sticks can mean a few things. The type that I use are called compressed charcoal that come in a stick form. There is also willow and vine charcoal that come in a stick as well. Willow and Vine are very soft. Compressed is usually much harder and makes a much darker line as well. You can find charcoal in a pencil form as well. Most variants of charcoal can be found in Fine Art Stores. You might also be able to find them in Craft Stores. Online is the next best place.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    The size of them can be the same for both. the difference is within the paper that is actually inside the book. Drawing sketch books have thicker paper of much better quality that I usually use for finished works. They are like 80ib paper. The sketch versions have 60-65Ib paper which is much thinner. That paper I usually use to sketch out rough ideas for a final product. Both are suitable for drawing. The drawing versions are usually more expensive though.

    Try using a bit of sandpaper to get rid of the excess graphite on the blending stump. I honestly don't really have this issue. I am very light on my blending stump when I blend so I don't transfer too much graphite around. I only press harder on it when I am making a sky.

    I actually have a whole lot of supplies that I never used on videos. Mainly because I just never got into them and I get a lot of this stuff cheap from when I worked at an art store or off ebay. I did pick up some clutch pencils and they are quite a lot of fun. But other than that, I haven't gotten any new mediums in quite some months now.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    Sorry for the late response. Been caught up in school. You can get a lot for 30 bucks. I would get a 12 set of drawing pencils in the Derwent, staedtler, faber castell brands. There are others as well. Those are about 10-15 bucks. Everything else is cheap though. Kneaded eraser, white eraser, and a tuff stuff eraser stick. Blending stump and a pad of sketch/drawing paper. That should bring you right around your price mark. Thanks a lot for subscribing!

  • @Rav3r916
    @Rav3r916 Před 12 lety

    That's true. I paint and I find it really constricting when I paint faces because it's very specific; unless it's something abstract, the conventional ways of painting doesn't really apply. Painting landscapes gives the artist more freedom, more flexibility, and rules don't always apply.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    With leaves, I find that using a regular pencil works better because you can use it on its side to place down a lot more graphite than a mechanical pencil will. It will help to give it a lot more expression and mood. Try that out as well and see what you think.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 11 lety

    When I do make colored works, I will usually only make a very light pencil drawing to guide me for when I apply the color. Most of my work is done just in pencil. I love the texture that they create.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  Před 12 lety

    I used to draw anime characters wayy back when I first got into drawing. I kind of used that as a starting point but I have always had a fascination with nature which is why I chose to draw them. There is so much freedom to creating them as well. You can do a lot of editing when it comes to drawing landscapes that you cant really do with people. If you leave out an eye or the mouth, it is no longer a realistic person. But leaving out a tree can still leave the image as a landscape.

    A basic set of Prismacolor colored pencils (12-set--available up to 120-set, with 12 additional colors recently introduced), and Verithin colored pencils (Verithin is hard, Prismacolor is soft), a package of #2 graphite pencils, a pad of acid-free paper, a brass manual sharpener, and an eraser pen (it takes refills, which may be purchased in packages of 10 sticks). Beyond this, adequate lighting, and eventually a drawing table with an adjustable angle top. There you go.

    Id say to get yourself a range of pencils. You can usually get a tin from staedtler for around 10 bucks. Then i would get some kneaded erasers and white erasers. As well as a thinner eraser like a tuff stuff eraser stick. Blending stumps and then whichever paper you like using. I would say to at least get some sketch to start you off. That would run you about 25 bucks or so. If you don't have a local art store near by, check out ebay.

    FYI on Artists box for anyone interested. You can get this Artists box or at least it looks just like it, on amazon.com for under 17.00. Just type in Macpherson Artist's Sketch Box with palette. They have most of what he shows in this video:)

    Oh yeah. I have Faber Castell, Staedtler, Derwent, Create A Color, and Kimberly pencils. I have grown quite the collection of art supplies since I have started. How are those supplies I sent over treating you???

    Get an eraser pen (refills can be purchased in boxes of 10 sticks). Both manual and electric are made; a manual is sufficient. It's also narrow enough to allow for very small areas of erasure.

    Thanks for posting bud! Yeah if you do pencil work, having a lot of different erasers helps out a lot!! I have a lot more erasers than what I have shown in the video but don't use them at all.

    I would imagine something more on the side of HB to a 2H or even 4H because it doesn't have as much texture as the B pencils. I know that charcoal also works really well because of how well it can blend.

    I had a friend tell me the other day that he used that. I would never even know that a such thing existed. And I am sure the quality of one would be pretty good.

    Thank you very much for the overview! Many of these are now in my drawing wish list. Really useful for those of us who have started/restarted again. I'd love to see this one re-posted with the music soundtrack turned way down.

    I prefer the Staedtler Radett. Made in Germany. And Staedtler makes refills which can be purchased in boxes of 10 sticks.

    Hmm. I do like your idea here. I should try to start to at least try to draw a silhouette of a person for some of my landscapes. That is a popular thing to do for concept landscape sketches to show the scale.

    The refills you will probably have best luck finding on Ebay. Unless you have some sort of fine art store near you, they might be hard to find.

    It'd be super awesome if you put together a basic little pack/kit type of thing and put them up on ebay for your fans so they can get the basics in 1 place. Coz i know where i live, i cant even find white charcoal!! Just an idea (:..

    I watched a tutorial on acrylic painting and he first drew the outline of a couple on tracing paper and then on the opposite side he coated the same area with charcoal. He then flipped it over and then retraced the outline onto the painting. Quick and easy. No carbon paper.
