    My big thing when picking out stuff for the home is 'Yeah it's gorgeous but how hard is it gonna be to clean behind/under?'. When I redid my master bath I replaced the toilet and put in a back-to-the-wall toilet because cleaning behind the toilet is gross and there is no behind to clean - and I love it. When I replaced the freestanding fireplace I had the choice of one on a pedestal or on legs. I thought the legs looked cute, I thought I'd style it by neatly stacking kindling in the space underneath. I regret not getting the pedestal. Ash and dust get under there and it's so hard to clean, I loose stuff under there all the time, I never style it nicely, I regret it. Things can look gorgeous and sparkly in the showroom but remember they're not being used so not getting daily grime on them and someone's getting paid to dust them and keep them looking sparkly so you'll buy them - once it's installed in your home you have to clean them.

      I'm thinking about doing this! Our bedroom is the biggest room in our apartment, and the office the smallest, but we spend so much more of our waking time in the office, working, teaching, taking classes, creating (he's a musician and I'm a writer). Still trying to convince my partner though lol....

      the bathroom and the walls were the things that I think went well. The floors could be done differently. Sanding the floors and give a varnish finish. Tiling could be an option especially in kitchen and bathroom looks good. Make use of carpet vaccum and deep clean carpet is option.

    Currently flipping a house, I’ve learnt a lot but my random lesson.. get oak doors.. my upstairs oak doors were £60 from howdens, the cheap primed doors were £20 from B&Q cheap and easy, great! but by the time I bought undercoat and gloss, prepped the doors etc.. it was easier and cheaper to just buy the £60 oak veneer doors

    Hermoine I’ve spent a lot of time worrying about making my house a bit bland so that if I sell it , more people would be interested . That is my regret ! Now I choose what I want because as you say everyone likes something different and you should be happy in your own home . I’m 62 and still learning .. never regret a decision you make because you learn from all of them . Thanks for your videos I love watching them x

      @afrikan_criola1923 Před 3 lety +2

      That's something I don't understand about people, specifically Americans, they buy houses and renovate thinking about selling not about living in, everything it's very neutral and a little bland, I think it's because people move a lot.
      I live in Europe, and in my country people buy houses and live all their lives, if they move its maximum of 2 times, in my country in Africa it's the same thing. We buy the house to living in.

    • @alinam5092
      @alinam5092 Před 3 lety +1

      I also noticed this, she talks so often about the moment when she will sell the house, that I thought she was going to sell it in the coming months. You can't renovate/decorate your house thinking about what will happen when/if you will sell it, you should like it (not the imaginary new owners), you should have a pleasant experience living there. Not to mention the fact that most buyers will renovate the house to suit their taste anyway, so I don't see why you would live in a boring house just because it is possible that at some point you'll sell it and you want it to be neutral. It's a completely different situation if you prefer to have a neutral "base" (white walls/doors/tiles), because you like to change the colors of the furniture/decorations all the time (instead of an accent wall).

    I feel like ending up with a few tiles with a slightly wrong colour is something that happens a LOT to people. My parents were tiling their bathroom a few years back, and while the serial number on the tiles was correct, there were four or five tiles in the box that were just a shade or two lighter than the rest. My dad ended up putting them in a spot where the light hits them and you don't notice it at all. I think the only people who actually notice it is my parents :)

    • @HermioneChantal
      @HermioneChantal  Před 3 lety +5

    I have often referred to what I call a very large file folder labeled "It was a good idea at the time". Everyone has at least one even if they don't admit to it. As others have mentioned you do learn as you go. What seemed like a great idea turns out to not be or the quick and cheap fix could end up being one of the best things you do in a space. You never know unless you try. Having watched the house evolve since the beginning, I have to say that you've brought some things to my attention I'd never thought about. That cover/cabinet inside your front door is a true Head Slapper! Not everyone would have thought of it, but you did. While I might not like so much pink, I actually applaud you for creating a home that is Yours, not mine, not Pinterest. It takes courage to create a home that reflects the occupant and you have loads of it. Congratulations and keep it up!

    Currently renovating my ENTIRE house top to bottom inside and out, including the yard and the roof. My kids are thankfully older (21 and 16) so it will be easier in that aspect but we are living here through it all. I'm also fortunate that my house is a two family style so we did the downstairs first and put in a temporary mini kitchen and it has a full bathroom for when we do the entire upstairs level which is where our bedrooms and main kitchen are. It's difficult no matter what, and there are always regrets. We've lived in this house for 21 years so I already had exactly what I wanted to do planned out for years and we are fortunate enough to be able to do it all at once, in a lot of ways. Now that it's summer, we do a lot of cold dinners so not much cooking has to take place. One thing that was a must was all new flooring through the entire house. We got the waterproof vinyl wood flooring so it is literally in every room, including the laundry room and bathroom downstairs. It was a bit of an expense but we never have to think about it. Your home is beautiful and like you said, there's always something you notice later like not perfect walls or floors, and money is always an issue. But you've done a great job. Good luck to anyone out there doing renovations!!! We've watched your videos to get ideas for our own so thank you for sharing!!!

It caused by legs and bladder/bowls to be numb (still does if I move in certain positions). We bought a late 70s/early 80s house where everything is good condition, but could just do with updating. Like we have old fashioned dark shelving and a patterned carpet that I really do not like in the sitting room. All the upstairs carpets are brown, and there's three different types of laminate flooring in the house, two of which I don't much like. If I could do it all again, and we hadn't spent every last cent we had and more on the mortgage, and if I hadn't been almost 8 months pregnant by the time we got the keys, I probably would have done some re-decorating before we moved in.
    I started painting the downstairs cloakroom more than 2 years ago. We got as far as trying to screw a toilet roll holder (from Anthropologie; a pre-Brexit purchase) to the wall, but my other half accidentally punctured the hot water pipe while drilling and scalding hot water started spurting out, and we had to put a bucket under it until we could find out how to turn off the water, then call an emergency plumber to dig out a section of the wall and replace the pipe. We lived with a big hole in the wall for months after, and with a patch of unpainted plaster for about a year. I've only just put a coat of paint on it the other day actually. That toilet roll holder ended up costing us well over 100 euro and it's still not even up 🙄 so, that's a regret.
    We've great plans for the living room and the bathroom, but the thoughts of ripping up carpets and ripping out shelving, and tearing out the bathroom while living here with a toddler is too much.
    One renovation I don't regret is the really good solar energy system we had installed last year. It cost *a lot* but does our hot water and charges our car and even feeds back some to the grid. I would rather have that than flooring I like (though, in fairness, flooring that I like would be nice too)

      💯% white or light girl, esp. in smaller spaces that are already on the cosy side. 😎 Plus, in a blistering hot🥵 climate, dark wall colors seem to make the heat worse and the walls start to ➡️close in⬅️. While I like some dark furniture, I find it can be very heavy and imposing too😖.
      😁Highly enjoy other people's color, wall paper, patterns, and drama in their home decor. For myself, I'm much more cautious & minimalist in those touches. Hard not to consider the 💰cost & my own 💪labor having to update it sooner rather than later (like Hermione). Overall, I prefer a light, soft soothing background palette.
      🥰Love to swap out my own ornaments, 🏺collections⚱️, & accessories on a quarterly, seasonal basis. Switch out some textiles (like curtains, slip covers, runners, pillow cases, basket liners & area rugs) two times a year. Love rich layers and details, but know I can become bored and/or overwhelmed with too much visual stimulation all at once. As a maximalista, it takes creative storage to be able to 🔄rotate things.
      😉 Not all white is right. Learned my lesson about paint🎨 the hard way😔. Think it is really an art choosing one with the right undertones. Not a fan of off-whites, and once picked a bright, crisp prison grade white that was way too harsh.😮 It did not play well with other elements.
      🤗Nowadays, scour latest House Beautiful magazine for articles on popular 🖌️ paint trends. 😱Knowing my instincts based on paint chips alone kinda sucks, I would rather lean on designers who understand warm vs cool whites. So far, that has never steered me wrong.

The only set of drawers in the kitchen is suuuper narrow. My mistake was choosing a light (grey and textured, but as close to white as I could get) tile for our kitchen floor. It shows everything and I have to clean it way more often than I want to. The kitchen floor is always getting wet, which mixes with dog paws and dirty feet. Plus, tile breaks every glass thing that’s dropped on it, which happens surprisingly often with a toddler. Next time I’ll do hardwood.

    I love your taste in chooses and think you've done a stunning job.
    You've put hard work sweat and I'm sure a few tears into your home.
    It doesn't matter if everybody doesn't like what you've done with your home, your the one living there and if your happy that's all that counts.
    Trail and error is all part of the bigger learning experience even qualified tradesman make mistake or have regrets about jobs they've done, we're only human after all
    Great job give yourself a massive pat on the back and enjoy your home, you've done amazing. .

    Prefer the expression lessons learnt than the word mistake...you did your best with the knowledge & finances you had at the time.
    Let me tell you there isn't one youtuber I've seen that hasn't changed their mind or learnt a lesson after a renovation...you are not alone my dear. Give yourself a pat on the back for your gusto, efforts and sheer determination in creating a home you love and enjoy because at the end of the day that's all that matters 😊

    I also regret a few things like getting rid of my mattress for a bed in a box. My mattress was way more comfortable. Also I agree start off with white paint and add color through throw pillows and decor. Last thing, I wished I spent more on flooring in my bedroom and got the original floor I wanted. Now im going to invest in an area rug to hide the floor

    Me and my boyfriend are restoring a 1930’s house (in Belgium) that also had woodworm in the upper wooden floors. But we’ve just embraced that as the character of the house 😊 fixing up an old house is a ton of work though, we’re only three months in (but we love it) 😅

    We had our floors sanded and filler put in. There isn't any drafts and them woodworm holes would be filled. You can have the filler matched to the same colour as the stain you use. its beautiful people always make comments on our floor.

      I had a 5mtr long unit built in my living room.
      The shelves didnt need to be as deep as I have them. Think about having lighting included. I wish I had added more lights. And make sure if a company design and build it that everything is costed and dont forget about the trim.
      I love mine and am glad I had it built but knowing better from experience I would slow down the process of design and not rush it. 👍

    The biggest regret so far is flooring in our living area - kitchen, living room and dining nook. Wood floor was instaled by a guy who seemed like he knows what he is doing. Buuut it is a disaster and now we have new kitchen and everything else, knowing that we will have to change our wood floors in few years because the prep work was not done right. 😐

    Do you know the delight I had when I saw this come up? I redid a 27 room Historic Italianate Villa some years ago and the last half was alone with dying Scottish Deerhounds about me. Couple regrets but I would even now go on a crying jag--- or just giggle when I think regrets. Best to see yours. I lived thro it to do several other smaller homes later. As will you and our other friends here. Be peaceful and stay well.

    Similar thing happened to my parents at their house!! Not only have they been renovating for about 6 years now, but first thing to be done was painting. Easiest way to change a room, right? Well my parents wanted to go for a cool gray color so they could match it with anything. Well the color they chose, I don’t think they swatched in enough places because now, the majority of the interior of their house is painted this gray color. But the catch is, during the day in the sunlight the gray color reads really lavender gray. So their house looks purple on the inside and they live in a California split so it’s challenging to repaint everything 😂😭😂😭

    I have lived in my home for 39 years and over that time I have made millions of mistakes ! At the moment it's my bedroom that is really annoying me, I can't stand my present wallpaper. I bought it because I had just had major renovation done and needed to put something on the walls to get the house clean. That was 5 years ago and I have had to live with this horrible choice. Prior to the work I had my ideal wallpaper, a pretty little blue, cream and lavender print, of course it had gone out of production and I could not get any more to replace it. I have been looking everywhere for something else I like only to find my favourite Papers are around £100 a roll ! A total outlay of £900 for one room before the necessary paint for the ceiling and woodwork and wall paper paste. If I could go back in time I would have bought twice as much of my original wallpaper !

    The very pale carpet can be shampooed. I also have very pale carpet at my front door, I bought a home carpet shampooer. It takes up just a little more room than my upright vacuum. I don't dine in my dining room so I turned it into my office. I dine in the living room in front of the TV. I don't sleep in the bedroom, I sleep in the living room on my convertible sofa, it's a full size bed. My largest TV is in the living room so that's where I gotta be.🤭
