Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

What kind of an actor tells a director that he'll only do one take of a scene? This director handled it very well, but that actor was out of line.
thats what brought me into the comments.
im such a prick id be the yelling director. idek how or why some actors would be that way but its incredible how different personalities could accomplish different things.
im a chef.
i yell. a lot. like the guy on tv.
i admire people who could keep their composure to accomplish things.
i usually get payed very well to do the opposite of that.
An arrogant one
Literally anybody on set can have an ego, and it all manifests in different ways unfortunately
Thank you Film Courage, for the value you bring our community…and the inspiration & drive to one day appear in that chair!
Cheers! We call it the "hot seat." 😊
Another great interview. Always appreciate the interviewer’s insightful questions and ability to adapt to the guest’s answers.
(11:10) This dude should join the diplomatic corps if he ever gets tired of directing. Damn!
Thanks for the insight. I love the commentary on the actors, the great ones demand we all step our game up. Probably saw it coming a mile away, lol.
I continually rewrite what boring things people say to make the subject more interesting. That said, business is business.
What's the difference between a great story and a mediocre story?
A great story gives the audience what they want, but not in the way they were expecting.
Like that answer!
It's very subjective, one person might love it, another might hate it. If your story compels the reader to keep turning pages you're doing something right whether you're following the "rules" of story telling or not. But I think for the most part it's the telling of the story that makes it good or bad, the story is like a map, the map isn't the road it's just describing the road or describing the journey. A great story teller can tell you to go to hell and have you looking forward to the journey.
How it's told' ..as the man said. For film IMO... Shot choices of the director. Shot selection of the editor. Editing is so important.
"And I will love you, baby, always
And I'll be there forever and a day, always
I'll be there 'til the stars don't shine
'Til the heavens burst and the words don't rhyme
And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
And I'll love you, always."
Nothing very strange in those words, I think any lover could say them; on the other hand, with a good arrangement and when sung by Bon Jovi they mean something else.
For me that is a good story, one that adds contrasts and details to a mediocre story.
Stories that deal with one main character, should show his/her goals. It should be clear and specific. Then its all about the hurdles. How difficult they are, how high the stakes are... there in lies the difference a mediocre story, and a great story. I dont think it's about not about storytelling.
Another difference, lot of times a character has to make up his mind to do something to achieve his goal. If the problem is about not having physical strength, or mental courage, that's an avg story. If the character (and the audience) is not clear if this is right thing to do or not and is having an ethical dilemma... that is a great story.
You have good points there, but here's the shot: not every story has a main character that knows what they want/finding their goals. They may have ideas of a good path based on something in their past or of the societal norm for example, but those ideas of a lie or a truth of the status quo aren't true to them, and the character goes on a journey to discover what that is that they want-sometimes phrased as what they're destined for, or even finding a greater importance of the "right" thing to do that's beyond what their original ideal world was. And that journey leads to this discovery is filled with great challenge and obstacles of what the character will do to acquire that greater meaning. Great stories provide change in a meaningful way that can reach through to the audience. Mediocre stories lack that depth and focus on the polish of what's already there on the surface of the ideas; they miss what's in-between the lines.
I love movies so much I always tell the truth and ppl don't appreciate it. And I am brutally honest altho I am working on my delivery. But real artists who want to do good work and not just see their name in lights as if the 2 are not connected will after the ego bruise will take ur criticism into consideration.
