Good talk Chris & Cool Tool Tony. I never saw a splitter I didn't like, just liked some better than others. Since I'm old and retired, I have regenerated into one of the more time then money types. My favorite brand of splitter is the one I can borrow from a friend. GNI

This is a great segment. you and tony are always good together, no matter what you're doing. I am awed by some of the cycle times i see on these channels and how quick they are. agree that if you are doing your own firewood, speed isn't a big factor. now that I'm retired and 70, speed isn't of the essence......lol. agree that a table is a game changer.

I'm 61. Been burning wood for 10 years. (To save on heating oil.) Started out burning pallets because that's all I could find in winter. Next year started looking for firewood. Split most by hand because I reasoned that's how men did it for centuries, no machine for me, thank you very much. Next year I helped a friend split wood with his Huskee 22 ton splitter. My eyes were opened! I could not believe how much faster it was and you could split so much more in a few hours. I now have that splitter.

For the most part you're right. The average man. But you're forgetting John Henry! -You said 100 yd dash 1000 times. First time I've ever heard anyone even hint that Superman could possibly get tired!! - You can stop worrying about hydraulic oil foaming by adding some silicone anti-foam. - A local Amishman, John Yoder makes probably the best kinetic splitter made. It splits anything any other splitter will, in 1.9secs cycle time. One man cannot keep up with it! His BIL and wife used one, in one afternoon they split their winter's supply, about 7 cords. Next day, he was grinnin' when he told me about it. I'd love to have one, but my poor wife has to be taken into consideration...; she'd kick my ass makin' her work like that!! - Always good to see you two and the pushie cats! I think you two absolutely know what you're doing! I'm gonna start copying you! Gotta go to WalMart and get a clipboard!!

great talk session. I bought a John Deere 5 log splitter last year. raised it up to waist height and I love it. very small hydraulic tank never heats up. restriction makes heat. box store splitters have to big of cylinders and to small of return lines. Pumps are not enough gpm for cylinder. And engine hp is to small for cylinder and all that reduces speed. love the talk session

Great video! Ive always believed in looking for the best you can afford then splurging for the next step up. There's nothing like name brand commercial equipment. As far as kinetic splitters, I have a Super Split HD and it has about a 2 second cycle time and at first it was intimidating but now its like second nature and it fly's through wood. It doesnt do well with big knots, thats why I ordered a Eastonmade Ultra and if that cant get through it I use our Wolferidge skid steer splitter will make splinters out of it. I think I have a great system, skid steer splitter to bust up big/knoty rounds then split them right next to the Super Split and or Eastonmade ULTRA...big pile right next to the splitter, no more picking up big rounds, no more noodling big rounds down, only thing Im missing is a conveyer which will probably be ordered this fall.

Quick story on the resale of quality made products with inflation...
I have an used farm equipment dealer just 5 miles down the road. Last week he took a 2007 Kubota 50 hp tractor with just 50 hours, in on trade. (It literally didnt have a scratch on the bucket paint) With it being pre emissions it sold in 3 days for $35,500, and the original sales sticker was with the manual. The tractor sold for new for $26,200. The guy made more money on his investment in equipments then if he had bought stock!👍

You are so right that about the "real world" tonnage of splitters. My "wimpy" 28 ton commercial grade splitter can run a 12-way wedge in wood that would stall my old box store 27 ton splitter. By the way, I've split elm on my splitter that was a dream to split, also had hickory that was a royal pain to split because of stringy wood. My Wolfe Ridge has the oil cooler, and when it kicks in it keeps the hydraulic oil no warmer than 120F.

The dual action splitter and the kinetic splitter at the Hoosier Firewood Hysteria event are mine. The dual action was the Harbor Freight 20-ton splitter that has some modifications /improvements done to it to increase speed and provide additional hydraulic fluid capacity. Also has the slip on 4-way wedge. But as both you and Tony said, unless it's a specific wood size it's usually faster to split with the single wedge.

The only company that seems to advertise the correct tonnage on their splitters is Eastonmade. As for the cost of a commercial splitter, it can be shared between a few neighbours that split firewood. Tony is right, it comes down to the old issue of money vs time. At the end of the day, I think it is worth it to go the route of saving time.

How is cycle time measured? I just bought a used 12 ton vertical splitter for 500€. I can adjust the starting position of the wedge depending on the size of the round so it always automaticaly returns just a little bit above the round. I never used a hydraulic splitter before so I thought that it is going to be a bit weak for my knoted beech rounds but so far it split everything that I placed under the wedge. And I'm talking about knoted 50cm long and 50cm wide rounds so heavy that I can't lift them from the ground by myself. The con of this splitter is that I need to lift the shorter rounds but it has the ability to split 100cm long ones that I don't need to lift. It looks quite fast but I never used a splitter before so I can't compare it with anything better
