Are Walls Really Thinner In Newer HDB Flats?

- Noise is the number one reason behind disputes between neighbours in Singapore, according to the Community Mediation Centre. One resident we interviewed says she can hear her neighbours talk, move furniture and even when they drop things.
But she believes it’s not because she has #badneighbours. Instead, she thinks it’s because walls in newer HDB flats like hers are thinner.
To find out if sound-proofing is indeed the problem, Talking Point asks acoustic consultants to compare the noise levels in her 4-year-old Punggol flat and a 35-year-old flat in Toa Payoh.

The only thing surprising in this video is that ang moh’s singaporean accent...
Bruno Knebel speaks with a Singaporean accent? No.
He speaks English clearly, and English is not his native language.
Some European accent, but I can't place it.
Lol you guys need to get your ears checked. That is anything but a Singaporean accent.
@@thulomanchay sounds like a toned down French accent
@@treelo11 i thought so too but his linkedin says Brazil
haha lol
The guy who did the tests did not show the viewers real-time data as a proof that there is no difference between old and new flats. His explanations were based on suppositions rather than analysis of objective data and therefore not conclusive.
He cannot reveal that the is an issue. Hdb will sue him
Lol the LKY way
So a HDB officer explained to me recently that as flats are taller these days, they need to keep it lighter per floor as it all adds up. Ground can only bear so much weight. Also some parts of Singapore has softer ground and some harder ground - and that determines the eventual height of the blocks.
Are you sure he never smoke you? The HDB officer is no Engineer by the way. And even if that is the case, shouldn’t HDB provide better sound proofing materials for their tiny units given the skyrocketed price of each of them.
If buildings are meant to be taller nowadays, and materials lighter per floor, still not an excuse to forgo the installation of additional sound dampening materials such as acoustic foam and panels between walls/floors. Proper counter measures should compensate for any "load lightening". This is lack of oversight on the part of the persons-in-charge and cost cutting measures by building contractors.
Unfortunately, I have the noisy upstairs and next door. I could hear the impact sound of dragging furniture, gym rolling ball , footsteep thumping originating from upstairs neighbour about 12.00 to 1.00pm not to mention the day time. And, my neighbour next door 's airborn sound by banging the door numerous time and the cats scratching the wall especially during midnight due to late- night driving fetching factory workers. I have to bear with it. I wonder why the HDB design is very lousy to use hollow block that transmit the airborn soundand concrete floor without insulation that transmit the impact sound. Life is such a hell!
This is terrible; what is the government, HDB, police doing - nothing!
Do not just assume it is upstairs. You will hear the downstairs just as clearly but may perceive erroneously it is upstairs.
Saw MP 3 times, HDB replied a few times, and wanted to mediate with neighbour but they refused to attend. Now, sue them. HDB just push the blame.
If a child lost Tupperware, guess the whole flat can hear 😂
Lol

How Do I Deal With My Neighbour From Hell?

Great thank you so much.
0:30 She is knocking a partition wall in the flat, not a separation wall between units.
Further more knocking near the end of the wall produces more vibrations than knocking in the middle of the wall. Near a door, and in the middle of the wall the sounds are different.
The wall between neighbours are solid, as is the wall of the "bomb shelter".

Some clowns who live higher up walk like an elephant, stamping their feet as they walk or even run.
Rats behave this way , they like to run and rush everyday.
Including at home. Can't be blame .
They are born to behave liked this.
Just complain to HDB untill they a get 1k fine. They need fines to teach them a lesson.
@@Cendrawasih444 I think such cases may need to go see MP to seek mediation. A protracted process.
@Gazpacho Suave Peeing is quite ok. Cannot hear.
sometimes it's below as well, mine thumping upstairs 11.30pm to 1am, Below Thumping running 10pm to 11.30pm, next door 12am to sometimes 3am can hear blasting tv/music, slaming of doors
@@yip2454 terrible...
If noise is the number one complaint, why is the government not taking this more seriously. They want to build more and more but do not safeguard against noise to save money. Singapore is one of the densest city so the standards of noise control should be higher than elsewhere; but the HDB simply irresponsible in not taking this more seriously - just like the PMD issue where they only looked at it more seriously after several years; and only after people were injured or killed. Noise is detrimental to physical and mental health of you and your children.
I'm guessing you didn't watch the whole video
Even if he did show the data, not many of us can understand how it interprets
Its called "tunnel vision".
The issue is the density, too many people packed in Punggol that's why the noise so bad.
That is why the standards of noise control should be higher in Singapore than other countries. The government keeps building flats but they don't care about the quality of life being destroyed by noisy neighbors!
yeah I bit confusing, is that ang moh or ceca?
How can the Govt help us on this, it’s really nuisance neighbour I am facing now
Buy noise cancelling headphones
@@weiwenwwe2066 how much and where to buy
I dont think it is the neighbour issues.. sometimes the sound itself is not that loud.. definitely we need more sound engineers to handle the design..
Prefab block anyways.Terrible quality imo
HDB builds expensive smaller flats and yet totally ignored the sound proofing of the units..
Actual fact is really thinner. The makcik knock so hollow. Try knocking at old hdb flat wall. Solid.
Aiyah... he works for hdb, its juz partitians not concrete walls of course u can hear the neighbors!
Haha she got told hard
This is a good article, can do more insight.
Very heart attack
Such noise
Much empty
Many sound
Wow
much wow
i live in an landed house which our house have lift as well as my neighbour damn the noise that travel through, anyway anyone got any solution how to reduce the sound? probably feature wall or something?
I think maybe u can google for "sound proof window". I have read before it is good for homes near expressway, mrt tracks.
Watching at this video because we are facing the same issue right now, got our hdb at Bidadari oso can heard very clearly from next door and upstairs noise, upstairs neighbour everynight knocking the floor in the middle of the night, not sure Izit got mental illness or what, I got wake up by the sound few times, really heart attack. And obviously alot friends just got marriage and can’t get the bto from here but my upstairs and opposite I saw is two older couple staying in. Not sure why, and downstairs got playground all the kids shout and scream in the morning and evening time, after awhile I really got bad headache, so I think back how come last time we stay our parents house hdb don’t have such an issue, as in the sound will still have but not such a hollow wall. What government doing? No one care? We still have to work on the following day but can’t sleep and rest well 😢
Same sentiments here. Victim of noisy neighbors upstairs. Stomping, dropping things constantly, running, skidding, you name it. Can't believe I'm living in sg. No recourse for this. I'm on my headphones in my own home 24/7 and I'd have a panic attack when they run out of batteries.
@@hanwendythelegend are they indian tenants?
White guy with a Singlish Accent lol
Wtf drywall is the worst because if you want to mount tv to wall it wall fall
How about mating noise?
it thin le.. just see their ready build mod u will know
What is the point of making this video?
He's testing the floors though he's not testing the walls so your title don't even make sense
Cover up.
The real problem with HDB buildings is the total lack of insulation , which encourages the massive use of air conditioning , and the lack of sound insulation is also a major fault . It is important to stop heat buildup in housing , and stop noise . Double glazing reduces noise from outside . Sorry to say Singapore buildings are far from Western building standards , and are adding to the problems of climate change
concrete walls bulit from ground up floor by floor vs lego walls which is not pure concrete - So simple
Where the location of this video filmed?? Crime watch also like to film the robbery case from jurong point to tiong bahru. Some impersonator sent letter of her name on chinese house owner's address.
We got some scammer pretend house owner is other race. Male CZcamsr will talk about showering after case of woman being filmed in shower.
Buy house in JB and you can have karaoke party 😂
Wah Lao Wei... Sporean so happy to buy new flats n now Sporean called media press!! To complaint n identify wall soundproof..wtf
@Gazpacho Suave not your problem to involve..
Million dollar public housing
Ang moh is not speaking sense not speaking truth he is speaking nonsense 😂
Developed nation's problem 😂
Why the sound expert must be ang moh?
have you heard about globalization?
Are they cheaper?
To hide an impression that it's a government propaganda.
Sex noise too??
The bl00dy smoke and moisture from outside all coming in from downstairs and upstairs... ... and they drill, and our side celling got cracks... ... and more leaks.
Bl00dy hell. The white paste 'burst' after a while due to inner wall pressures. This is ridiculous! The finding is due to new sealing of holes with white paste, then the room is completely air-ed, and holes emerges, with one super shocking.
