Are Walls Really Thinner In Newer HDB Flats?

  • Noise is the number one reason behind disputes between neighbours in Singapore, according to the Community Mediation Centre. One resident we interviewed says she can hear her neighbours talk, move furniture and even when they drop things.
    But she believes it’s not because she has #badneighbours. Instead, she thinks it’s because walls in newer HDB flats like hers are thinner.
    To find out if sound-proofing is indeed the problem, Talking Point asks acoustic consultants to compare the noise levels in her 4-year-old Punggol flat and a 35-year-old flat in Toa Payoh.

    So a HDB officer explained to me recently that as flats are taller these days, they need to keep it lighter per floor as it all adds up. Ground can only bear so much weight. Also some parts of Singapore has softer ground and some harder ground - and that determines the eventual height of the blocks.

    • @Callsign-Blade_RunnerSG
      @Callsign-Blade_RunnerSG Před 3 lety +5

      Are you sure he never smoke you? The HDB officer is no Engineer by the way. And even if that is the case, shouldn’t HDB provide better sound proofing materials for their tiny units given the skyrocketed price of each of them.

    • @ethanf.6848
      @ethanf.6848 Před 2 lety +2

      If buildings are meant to be taller nowadays, and materials lighter per floor, still not an excuse to forgo the installation of additional sound dampening materials such as acoustic foam and panels between walls/floors. Proper counter measures should compensate for any "load lightening". This is lack of oversight on the part of the persons-in-charge and cost cutting measures by building contractors.

    Unfortunately, I have the noisy upstairs and next door. I could hear the impact sound of dragging furniture, gym rolling ball , footsteep thumping originating from upstairs neighbour about 12.00 to 1.00pm not to mention the day time. And, my neighbour next door 's airborn sound by banging the door numerous time and the cats scratching the wall especially during midnight due to late- night driving fetching factory workers. I have to bear with it. I wonder why the HDB design is very lousy to use hollow block that transmit the airborn soundand concrete floor without insulation that transmit the impact sound. Life is such a hell!

    0:30 She is knocking a partition wall in the flat, not a separation wall between units.
    Further more knocking near the end of the wall produces more vibrations than knocking in the middle of the wall. Near a door, and in the middle of the wall the sounds are different.
    The wall between neighbours are solid, as is the wall of the "bomb shelter".

    If noise is the number one complaint, why is the government not taking this more seriously. They want to build more and more but do not safeguard against noise to save money. Singapore is one of the densest city so the standards of noise control should be higher than elsewhere; but the HDB simply irresponsible in not taking this more seriously - just like the PMD issue where they only looked at it more seriously after several years; and only after people were injured or killed. Noise is detrimental to physical and mental health of you and your children.

    Watching at this video because we are facing the same issue right now, got our hdb at Bidadari oso can heard very clearly from next door and upstairs noise, upstairs neighbour everynight knocking the floor in the middle of the night, not sure Izit got mental illness or what, I got wake up by the sound few times, really heart attack. And obviously alot friends just got marriage and can’t get the bto from here but my upstairs and opposite I saw is two older couple staying in. Not sure why, and downstairs got playground all the kids shout and scream in the morning and evening time, after awhile I really got bad headache, so I think back how come last time we stay our parents house hdb don’t have such an issue, as in the sound will still have but not such a hollow wall. What government doing? No one care? We still have to work on the following day but can’t sleep and rest well 😢

    The real problem with HDB buildings is the total lack of insulation , which encourages the massive use of air conditioning , and the lack of sound insulation is also a major fault . It is important to stop heat buildup in housing , and stop noise . Double glazing reduces noise from outside . Sorry to say Singapore buildings are far from Western building standards , and are adding to the problems of climate change

    The bl00dy smoke and moisture from outside all coming in from downstairs and upstairs... ... and they drill, and our side celling got cracks... ... and more leaks.
    Bl00dy hell. The white paste 'burst' after a while due to inner wall pressures. This is ridiculous! The finding is due to new sealing of holes with white paste, then the room is completely air-ed, and holes emerges, with one super shocking.
