Before starting this hobby, it is a good idea to watch hours of DIY videos of this and that. That could save you A LOT of money.
8:40 - watered down PVA + a drop or two of washing up liquid (or any other liquid soap - shower gel, shampoo, hand soap, etc.)... You need the soap in there as a flow improver. It breaks the water tension and allows the glue to flow below the tops of the grass, just like a wash in painting.
You can also add alcohol (IPA) instead of some of your water. This will speed up drying times as the alcohol will evaporate much faster than water.
As for the spray bottle. I just keep bathroom cleaners spray bottles. Wash them out thoroughly, making sure to spray a lot of water through them. Then you can use them till they break. When they break you simply recycle them and pour your PVA mix into the next spray bottle. Cheap and easy.
Almost all the Geek Gaming scenics stuff is the same as stuff you can make at home for a lot less money. When Luke was originally promoting it thats what he said - you can make it yourself or you can buy it from him if you don't want the hassle. But if you are doing multiple boards like this it's waaaaay better to make it yourself.
That’s a great tip, thank you! I’ve veered away from using isopropyl alcohol because I don’t have somewhere well ventilated enough unfortunately but for those with a garden/balcony it does work really well. I haven’t given flow improver a go so need to try that next time. It’s mostly the spray bottle itself that I struggled with when mixing up my own stuff in the past-they either came out as too direct a stream or got clogged up too easily. And definitely a big fan of Luke’s approach, so many shortcuts I’ve picked up from his channel.
I appreciate the careful way you gave specific credit for this frankly gamechanging approach but it's you and your channel that showed it to me, never seen it before and absolutely love the results being so simply achieved.
That said I had some already and had a test, as well as being so straightforward, this stuff layers up really naturally, just cutting and placing bits here and there into a turfy, hummocky landscape that perfectly captures peaty moorland in a way that I've always wanted to create a board of.
It's a landscape of rich very lush green turf over dark wet peaty ground that fissures and breaks up naturally, showing both, reflective dark pools of standing water recessed down in it bordered by longer grasses and occasional flowering plants. Craggy outcroppings are very natural breaking through it and always dappled with moss and lichens. A board makers dream and now I can layer it up beautifully, simply and so happily you can't imagine.

This is literally the video I have been looking for. I am starting to make 2foot 6inch by 2 foot 6 inch mini boards for games like frostgrave and silver bayonet. Would you have any suggestions on making a simple water board (maybe without resin). I’m hoping to make generic simple boards for different scenarios. Thank you for the video! I may just break down and buy sceneic sealant. I tried a few times making my own, and it always ends up with white patches that look like sweat salt, or some other unwanted bodily secretion.
Found similar product sold as jute "Worm Bin Blanket". Can anyone check their google results and confirm this is the same or close enough?
I've had a look - that seems a lot more coarse than this? I think that's just jute on its own. It can be annoying to find as there are quite a few places that sell basket lines made of coconut fibre now instead which is another completely different texture. Sorry, from where? I do take quite a lot of care to reference where exactly I found this technique (the Perry Miniatures facebook page who adapted it from Dave Andrews) in the video and the description. I also searched before posting the video and couldn't find anyone else outlining it on CZcams.
