  • Hugh and Daniel face off in a rematch race between two of the largest stations in suburban London (well Hertfordshire too). Hugh takes Southern’s hourly direct service via the West London Line, while Daniel takes Thameslink and London Northwestern via St Pancras and Euston.

    Great video guys! It's an interesting service that Southern run - always busy when I've used it but they've shortened it hugely since the Gatwick-Rugby Connex days.

    Well the challenge was won just south of Wembley Central where the Southern joins off of the Up/Down reliefs onto the Down Slow which both these services use.

    This actually helped a lot! I had no idea that there was a Southern Service from Watford Junction to East Croydon.
    Mum is mobility impaired and we wanted to go and ride all of the Trams together and tick the stations off. To navigate the tube with step-free access is a song dance to be polite. Luckily she can do a few step-ups and downs on and off trains but staircases are a no go.
    We would need to go to Harrow & Wealdstone and get the Bakerloo line to Paddington, change onto the Circle/H&C to Hammersmith, District Line to Earls Court then change to dog-leg down to Wimbledon. This is way more Simple though, LNWR service in to Watford Junction, then a Southern service to East Croydon & it's covered on a day travel ticket.
    We are planning on doing all the DLR stations too, thankfully that is much easier to get to. We can Overground from Willesden Junction across to Stratford, or head to Paddington where we know very well and has level boarding and head to Stratford that way.

    I’d say the better changing option would be to take a fast southern service into Victoria, and then change to Victoria line to Euston. Probably get you to Euston before the Thameslink had even got to Blackfriars!

    At the end of the 80's and early 90's, I used to stay at my aunts flat in Badric Court, Battersea (Actually very close to the old abandoned Battersea Station that closed and was demolished in 1940), which overlooked, what is now, the West London Line. I used to stand on the balcony and watch the freight going along there during the day, with the odd rare passenger service, and hear them in the night, and wonder where it went :D

    Oh dear not the Euston Road!!!. Come out Thameslink St Pancras and there's short quick on-street walking route to Euston. just 500 meters. Round the Crick Institute. Marked on street from the St P exit at the top of the Thameslink barrier line! So, out onto Midland Road and the huge Green and Grey signs pointing along Brill Place. Takes literally a few minutes to inside Euston NR!

    Probably quicker to get the avanti west coast non stop to Watford Junction or a LNWR service that runs fast

    • @thetflthree
      @thetflthree  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Well the former isn't possible because despite the fact Avanti stops some services at Watford they are intended for pick up only and Oyster isn't valid. The latter is very rare as most LNR trains will at least call at Harrow and Wealdstone first -Hugh.

    • @amxgaming9153
      @amxgaming9153 Před 4 měsíci

      @@thetflthree didn’t know oyster weren’t valid on avanti tbh. You could probably leave later by getting a Vic train from ECR that utilises the fast lines. To skip out Selhurst to Balham.

    The fact that the direct service was only 4 minutes ahead of a service with 2 changes (the link being a run on foot) is mad.
    Especially when the changing route had delays and started 5 minutes later - that makes it about a minute quicker even with delays!!
    Although when did the Southern service stop running to Milton Keynes?

    another race idea is Hornsey to new cross gate great northern and London overground vs great northern Thameslink and southern because you have to change twice instead of once if you do great northern Thameslink and southern but at the same time the overground journey from Highbury and Islington to new cross gate is very slow. the timetabling means the connection at Finsbury park is great but the southern service from London Bridge to new cross gate is only half an hour so there's lots of factors that make that race interesting

    I was at stockwell and I had to choose to get the victoria to euston and get the lnwr to watford or get the northern to balham and get the southern. The victoria/lnwr way was half an hour faster

  • @Cliffordhurst951
    @Cliffordhurst951 Před 3 měsíci

    Surely, the time taken should be from the time the first train taken starts to move until passing through the ticket barrier at the destination station, not simply the first to arrive.After all, its the journey time whichmatters!

    • @HatterDave
      @HatterDave Před 4 měsíci +3

      If you're going on a direct comparison between leaving East Croydon and arriving at the destination in question then yes
      But there's lots of ways of looking at it, for example you could argue that the "typical" train commuter wouldn't run between St Pancras and Euston.
      Could also make a point that the convenience of it being direct makes Southern a better option especially if you've got luggage and/or children with you but it's also only an hourly service so yo'd need to get your times right etc

    If you had made the 11:54 from Euston, you would have won by around 10 minutes.
    The quickest route is 11:15 ECR - 11:45 STP, 11:54 EUS - 12:14 WFJ v 11:10 ECR - 12:23 WFJ.
