    My husband and I done this all the time while he was still here. We put out nets and trout lines all down the hatchie river in Haywood county Tennessee. He ordered rice cakes and cheese from a Louisiana catalog. We would catch catfish and this huge net we caught buffalo. There's something he showed me that I never heard of on what he used for bait on the trout lines and that's Ivory soap. I didn't believe it until I went to pull up the line and there was catfish, bass and other kinds of fish 🐟. We done it for enjoyment and being outdoors. The fish 🐟 we caught mostly the buffalo we would give to family and friends! He's gone now to be with the Father 🙏 but I will never forget!!!

    I am 61 years old me and my brother commercial fished when we were in our early 20s. Catfish were selling then for the same price it is now. The middle men and the stores make the money. I see fillets selling in the stores for up to 7 dollars a pound. It's hard to make a living when half of your catch goes to pay for bait and ice. Bait, ice and fuel prices go up but not what you get for the fish.

    In my 60s now and originally from NW FL. As a teen I would go out with my grandfather with a massive gill net in the bay which was “work”. Back then gill nets were legal but not any more. He built his own boat where the motor was mid boat with a platform for the gill net to set on for easy roll off.
    He made his own net teaching me how to sew by having me make a cast net. What an education he gave me. I still have the sewing needle he gave me back then which I treasure.

    Last few years i put out a single trotline 50hooks with live bluegill and catch about 400lbs cats a weekend May to August. While it is fun, it's a tremendous amount of work if you aren't baiting up or running, you are getting bait and cleaning. I can only handle 1 line.
    Cats over 5lbs need to have the center vein cut out and any brown meat that lies just under the skin skimmed off. If u do that, you can make a 50lbr just as tasty as 3lb'r.

They called him Donald Duck or just “Duck”, he was the son of a commercial fisherman and his dads dad was a commercial fisherman as well. I was the boat pilot at 5 years old. Dad would have 12-15 nets out at a time, he was also a full time corrections officer. Dad sold his cats for
    $2.00 a pound until MODOC shut him down by making catfish a game
    Only fish. That was a really hard hit for dad. He was left basically only being able to keep scale fish and sales dropped dramatically. I learned to sew hoop nets when I was 9 and can’t tell you how many I’ve made. Later on when I was 16/17 dad started selling eggs to an outfit from New York, that helped but taking the catfish away was a devastating blow.

    Should note that there's nowhere near the amount if commercial fisherman today as there was many years ago. That's how many people used to survive and provide for their families. So all the haters need to do some serious research when they think this guy's "taking all the fish". Knowledge is power!

      There are millions of people who fish for trophy catfish it puts a huge dent in the fish population just look on here those 20lb cats will be trophy fish in 10 yrs theres not many big fish out there you should get channel cats not blues or flat heads they will ban this in the feature

    • @BUBS_HD
      @BUBS_HD Před 2 lety

      @@adventures223 it'll never get banned. The commercial fishing industry was alot heavier in the 50s 60s 70s n what not, and look there's still plenty of fish and plenty of big fish. Just because you can't catch em doesn't mean they're not there. Look at all the new records set lately, it's all a part of conservation. Which commercial fishing is heavily regulated by government agencies. Any everyday fisherman could go catch tons of fish in a day with rod n reel or other methods n easily make a much larger impact than commercial fisherman do, plus the everyday guy doesn't hardly pay a fraction of what it costs commercial fisherman do, which that money goes right back into helping conservation of the very animals they're taking.

    • @adventures223
      @adventures223 Před 2 lety

      @@BUBS_HD there are not many fish over the 100 pound mark its rare it takes many many years to get that big anything over 20lbs is considered good ya people are catching a lot of small fish and some big ones but not as much as before theres tons of videos on you tube that talks about it i can cath trophy cats but there aint many to cath you have to keep traveling to spots that havent had a lot of pressure

    • @BUBS_HD
      @BUBS_HD Před 2 lety

      @@adventures223 there's not many fish that live long enough to reach the 100 pound mark. That's due to deteriorating water conditions and such, not because of commercial fisherman. I personally live in a "river town" on my wall is a picture of our boat dock area from years ago and it has over 50 commercial boats all selling their catches of the day. Today there's not even a handful of guys that do it anymore and most of them target the Asian carp that have decimated our waterways. I personally run around a dozen hoop nets every year for a couple months just to put meat in mine n some friends n family members freezers. Meat weight average maybe 1000 pounds a year. The amount of fish the gentleman in this video caught proves to me that he's in a very well populated area and that the fishery he's in is extremely healthy. If he wasn't doing what he's doing then it would become overpopulated and the adverse effects would much more harm the population and growth of trophy fish in that area due to lack of nutrition and environmental sustainability.

    Great video. I am in Alabama, wanting to start this and have a few questions if you dont mind. Size of your boat, aluminum? What length is the net? What depth water do you sink the net? Where do you sell the fish, restaurants, grocery, or other? Thank you if you can share some beginner tips. God Bless you and your son. Your wife is lucky to have you. I admire this kind of hard work and committment.

Boat that big not necessary to get started. He says the net lengths in the video go back and check. Water depth as well in the video. Sells the fish to an established market buyer. Good luck

      Jan's net supply has the nets usually 12' and 2-4' diameter plus different hoop materials. It's definitely a two three man job if you're rolling them in. I did it with my father before my teens he hand made net's.

    Grew up on the Missouri river. The levee split our property down the middle for 3 miles. We fished hoop nets, trot lines, jugs, and noodling. Netted a huge pirrana once, in the 60's. No one believed it. Eals and Lot of things in the rivers. My science teacher in 5th grade didn't believe in red wing black birds. I told dad, he said, "your teacher don't know shit from apple butter"!

    In the old days, in the Westcounty of Britain, the fishers would throw small coin or trinkets into the ocean to buy wind for their sails. It saved for a calm day because wind was never a uncommon thing, ever.

    Going after trophy catfish has become a huge catch photo release (CPR)sport. Catching fish in the 50s is becoming a thing of the past because once a 40 or 50 goes in a bucket it takes 20 years to replace it. If you think this doesnt make a difference talk to the guides and fisherman on Wheeler and guntersville in Alabama. I hope this fishery can sustain this.

    • @OutsidetheLevees
      @OutsidetheLevees  Před 2 lety

      Yeah this isn't Wheeler or Guntersville. It's an open system the entire Mississippi River Delta. Very few people actually do this too. No one down here has ever even heard the words "trophy" and "catfish" together. They are a trash fish to most. Speckled trout and redfish are the mainstays. But I would think that would mean it's untapped far as catching 40s or 50s.
