- Famed drummer for the Police and composer Stewart Copeland has one of the more fascinating bios in modern music. His father was a founding member of the CIA and his mom worked in British Intelligence.
After playing in the successful UK prog rock band Curved Air in the mid 70s, Stewart started a new band called the Police with bassist and lead singer, Sting-and eventually guitarist Andy Summers. Over the next decade the Police would go on to become one of the top-selling rock bands of all time, selling over 75 million records.
Last year Stewart released the book, “Stewart Copeland’s Police Diaries,” which includes his personal notes dating back to the band’s formation in 1976 through 1978, when they started to take off.
On today’s episode Bruce Headlam talks to Stewart Copeland about the first time he saw Sting play and how he was able to successfully lure him into his then non-existent band. Stewart also explains why he and Sting eventually had a musical falling out, and how the Arabic rhythms he heard growing up influenced his highly lauded drumming style.

Any interview with Stewart Copeland is a treat.
He has a tendency to repeat himself from one interview to another, but he's such a good storyteller I don't really mind

I would pay a lot of money to hear that tape of Sting singing “Don’t Care”.
Although Sting wrote and sang the Police songs it was Andy Summers and Stewart that held my attention . Summers had a unique sound during that period and Stewarts drum playing was sublime.
Just my humble opinion .
Great interview. Beyond Stewart's amazing drumming, I gained a deeper appreciation of him when I learned about his work doing scoring / composing and started to hear him share his encyclopedic knowledge of music history.

Steward Copeland is so articulate, not your typical rock drummer, banging away on the tribal skins. But the man can bang too. He's fun to listen to, as The Police historian.

I wonder if the fact that stewart's brothers were in mansgrment at A&M influenced sting to join this new band snd stick with it..did he know this before moving to london.
I thought Miles Copeland had an independent label called IRS records (when the Police were forming). Were they a subsidiary of A&M?

More hip-hop/rap music is created with live instruments than you think, Stewie 🙄 That includes old and new school.
He thinks Moby is Dr Dre, when in fact Moby plays more instruments than McCartney.
