The blues are in safe hands folks
The Carpenters would be so very proud.
Well. One good thing happened this year. Finding Marcus and Billy Strings.
agreed.
Ya tru
Have you found Taj?
Indeed 😉
I hear ya brother!
The many sides of Marcus King 🤴
Whoever came up with the idea for Markus to cover this song is genius.
I’m going to say that Dan Auerbach had a hand in this song choice.
Wow. Leon Russell would be smiling for sure!!

I'll bet his Mom was a fan when he was growing up. Maybe he saw them do the song on "Tommy Boy" lol
10 seconds into the first time I heard him I knew I'd be listening to his music for the rest of my life.
And me
Me too. Marcus and Billy Strings.
Ditto over here, still can't figure out why he's not a household name. Just mind blowing talent.
Truth
Same... 💙💙💙💙💙
Marcus comes from a family of musicians; It's in their blood....their DNA as in so many cases.#StraightOuttaGreenvilleSC
Saw him this last weekend. Blown away. My daughter took me. In the audience there were many such parent/kid pairs. It was incredible. Markus has such much soul. I loved listening to him interpret songs. There were influences of jazz, George Benson, BB King, The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker and many more "old school" folks. Versatility, fine lyrics and beautiful tunes, great generosity, technical prowess and pure humble love poured out from him. Thanks Marcus and Band. I am a fan.
Every time I hear him I hear another hint of some of the greatest guitar players in history. Absolutely love his music
What a rare great..I've lived long enough to see music return to life after the loudness wars and protools...
Exactly, perfectly put. 🥰
One of my newest finds is singing one of my oldest favourites ❤
You have to fall in love with Marcus King 👑
Talk ABOUT a Superstar!
Just discovered your music all the way up here in Canada
Al Green + BB King + Ray Charles + Aretha Franklyn + Gladys Knight and you get the sounds of Marcus King
Marcus King is a rare talent. He caught my ear the very first time I heard him. Impeccable guitarist and sincere, soulful voice.
In person he’s even more amazing I got goosebumps! He’s the new SRV!
I don’t think he’s the new anybody, he’s the first Marcus King ;-)!
Damn straight
@@bstanley0072 well put.
Pareil pour moi...la première fois c'est pas mal quand même 👍👍👍 Marcus King 😉
Baby, baby , baby ,
ohhh baby
That guitar sounds like a dream
The way this man plays and uses nuances in his voice and guitar is so freakin unique is astounding . Pure talent. Put this on the radio! people would react. It made my wife melt
This was my introduction to Marcus King. Amazing artist!
A blueser and a jazzer. a pretty rare thing.
Karen's original vocal is simply iconic with it's orchestral arrangement backing. Marcus' stripped down take is more soulful and that guitar work of his is amazing. This is a great version of Superstar.
Right on and I do agree. Just as a heads up though, the original Is Delaney & Bonnie, written by leon Russell
@@Stonecrow25 Thank you for sharing that. I can't believe that I was not familiar with them. What a talented line-up of backing artists they had. The Carpenter's version shows Richard's arranging talent, but the genesis for their final product is clearly in the Delaney and Bonnie version.
Whenever Marcus starts to play you stop whatever your doing and stop what shits in your head, and listen.
It simply doesn't get any better than this.
yeah.
except Karen Carpenter

Marcus IS a freakin' SUPERSTAR!! Hands down!! We're watching a very young "Warren Haynes" growning in front of us!!
Bravo, A great song made greater. Well done. Karen would be proud!!!!!
INCREDIBLE!!!❤❤❤❤❤️🔥❤️🔥
I'm 3 years late 'discovering ' this. But my goodness glad I did
Wow a man beyond his years was first thing I said, he's 25 with the smooth jazzy blue's soulful sounds of the 70s
Only Marcus King could make this song awesome.
If this guy was born in the 1950's he would literally be as big as Elton John in the 70s and 80s. Top notch performance.
Sigh.. I'm not hating on Marcus. He's got plenty of talent. But if you're going to sit her and tell me you think he's in the same league as Elton John vocally.. I'm not being a dick, do you really think that?
We've been fed keyboard musicians and now this man opened the door with soul in his guitar and his true grit voice. Thank you
99% of the time I hate remakes of contemporary music (I’m a huge blues fan) but this guy really surpassed the original.
He is singing the original lyrics which is by Bonnie Bramlett/Leon Russel. The Carpenters did a cover but not the original.
Gotta tellya mr marcus .. that is without any fear of contradiction ..the best cover verrsion of superstar i ever did dune hear ..yes siree bob .. bravo ..take a bow ..😍😎pip pips and carryon pilgrims
Once in a generation a superstar comes along
Talent, guts and no autotune. Classic!
Show me one live rock performance on CZcams that uses auto tune? None of them. So why is this comment on every video?
I was looking for the Real thing .. I Found Justice to it !!!!! Well Done !
There is nothing he can't sing loved it.
Holy fuck this man is a gem, his voice is honey poured over thunder and he has an innate understanding of the guitar like it's an extension of his very soul.
Made me cry, and Karen smiled....
Epic honor
65 people hate music.
This is FIRE!
CZcams allows us to know about the greatest musicians on the planet, so much so that eventually we think we have seen all there is to see. Then Marcus King comes along and stands out even from the best of the best. His guitar playing alone is enough to get your attention but I just cannot think of a singer guitarist who’s voice is as jaw-droppingly good.
This guy is so impossible Good It just blows me away every time I watch
This fellow has grabbed the torch to light the way for as long as he can!
Fantastic guy!!! Allready a Superstar!!!
The 4th King has come along, and he' s a white boy from South Carolina.
GREENVILLE
And we're incredibly proud of him. Long way from the open mics at Chicora Alley
@@Garyj1784 he mentioned a place they played small shows starting up where they had crazy rules where he couldn't talk to the audience between songs and they were stuck in a alley haha that must be the place you referred to. He wouldn't say the name in the interview cause he is a nice guy.
@@brandonjohnson1257 that's exactly where it was. Performing there is a nightmare, but it's location creates incredible exposure. I was fortunate enough to see many many MKB shows there among other spots around town. I even remember seeing him play at a small town family festival not far from here with his dad when he was maybe 12 or 13. His pops has been a hometown legend for years. If I'm not mistaken there is a video on here from that very show.
@@brandonjohnson1257 here you go. His aunt actually posted it back then.

By far best version
This guy has got in spades....wonderful.
The 25 people that gave this a thumbs down, have no concept in what real music and talent sounds or looks like, met Marcus years ago and been a fan for a long time, all the way back to Greenville early times
Love me some Marcus King ❤️
Wow... I don't think I've heard anyone cover the Carpenters. I love it!
Holy f*ck man didnt u hear about "If I were a carpenter"?!?!
He didn’t cover the Carpenters; the Carpenters covered Delaney and Bonnie… ;)
@@BrysonKeenan yes, most of the Carpenters greatest hits were covers. This is a very nice one, delicately handled.
Carpenters cast their net pretty broadly in search of inspiration, and often turned out definitive recordings. (e.g. "Close To You", "Calling Occupants" or any of their Paul Williams pieces like "We've Only Just Begun").
Richard's own songs, like "Only Yesterday" and "Top of the World" are not too shabby either, and are rarely bettered by other artists.
Luther Vandross does a incredible cover of this but it doesn’t get much better than this. Marcus is the real deal.
This guy can really do it all
Music is back the way it should be!!
Teddy Swims....could tear this song up....Marcus is an excellent guitarist
My newest .. favorite version of this great tune written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett ..
The song we know today as “Superstar” was originally called “Groupie (Superstar)” when it first appeared on that Delaney and Bonnie B-side.
As you might expect, the song was about a women who fell for a superstar passing through the town where she lived. They spent just one night together, which evidently meant a lot more to her than it did to him because she never saw him again.
Now her only connection with the man she loved is when she hears one of his songs on the radio.
Karen Carpenter’s voice perfectly conveys the sense of longing for the guy she only got to hold in her arms for one special night. Somehow she injects vastly more emotion into “Superstar”…
Long ago, and oh, so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear
But you’re not really here, it’s just the radio
Alfred Lord Tennyson said “Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”
That’s not been my experience. And from the way she sung “Superstar”, I’m not sure that was Karen Carpenter’s experience either.
I could just be wildly projecting of course, but for me, even though Karen Carpenter’s voice displays all its usual immense technical quality, “Superstar” always feels to me like it’s got something a bit extra too.
There’s a vulnerability in the words Karen Carpenter sings which always says to me…these aren’t just words I’m singing to the best of my ability, this song hits home with me in a way few others do.
Whether that’s the case or not, the rich orchestration on this most recent version of “Superstar”, courtesy of the Royal Philharmonic, somehow emphasises that vulnerability and makes an already-emotional song into something really quite moving.
Loneliness is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait to be with you again
What to say to make you come again?
Come back to me again and play your sad guitar
I know we’re talking about one of the most exceptional singing voices of the 20th Century here, but Karen Carpenter really sells this verse. Just the way she sings the word “loneliness” makes you feel this is a path she understands all too well.
Richard Carpenter does an immense job on the production for this updated version of “Superstar”. He makes it into something so much more than just the revival of some well-known tune by a long-departed artist.
It remains firmly the song that showcased Karen Carpenter’s unique vocal talents back in 1971.
At the same time, it’s an entirely different, more vulnerable, more emotional, more mellow, more melancholy, more richly-toned song that could easily have been recorded yesterday…not, as it is now, nearly 50 years ago.
If you love the Carpenters as much as I do, you could do a lot worse than spend a few minutes in the company of this version of “Superstar”.
It uses the original vocal track…which, let’s face it, would be impossible to improve on in any event…but updates the musical accompaniment with the help of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
And it’s just wonderful…from the harp that kicks the track off, to that most mournful of instruments, the oboe, for the rest of the intro, every element of the Carpenters’ version of “Superstar” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is sheer perfection from start to finish.
Here’s Karen Carpenter on vocals with Richard Carpenter’s updated version of a Carpenters’ classic…Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett’s song, “Superstar”… czcams.com/video/eGrLUavvkIA/video.html&feature=emb_logo
Love to see great blues players show they can play jazz chords and progressions, tasteful!
Some people just have unique musical talent. I always joke that Marcus is a same world same time reincarnation of Warren Haynes - just may be true...both bring us extraordinary music in the same way. There is an amazing collection of young “real musicians” with a lifetime ahead of them emerging - we live in good musical times if you look for it. Thanks Marcus and those who play with him!
Are you any relation of Frank Rizzo??
@Tony Rizzo, Not taking anything away from Marcus at all, he's great and a gifted talent, so don't get it twisted? But, you do know that Marcus's first 2 albums were produced by Warren Haynes? Warren was the first to sign Marcus on Warren's own label, and both jam together live all the time when they can.
216Numbskull which is why I specifically wrote “same world same time reincarnation”
All that talent and a great hat collection!
Walking on the beach on beautiful windy morning!
Written by the great Leon Russell and arguably the best woman blues singer of the rock era, Miss Bonnie Bramlett.
Janis Joplin? IDK, I'm not a singer or a vocal coach or a music critic. Really? I am actually interested.
Are you friggin kidding me? Incredible.
This guy is a beast on the guitar and his vocals are just incredible. Thank the universe for the beautiful music that will just keep on going 🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘
Didn’t know what to expect…blew me away!
Holy tamoly. The sky’s the limit. Let’er rip!😊
I love how he introduces everyone
Oh….my….GAWWWWWWWWWWDDDDDDD
i FOUND THIS GUY TODAY AND I HOPE HE WILL SUCCEED AND HAVE A GREAT CAREER, BECAUSE HE SOUNDS GREAT AND DESERVES IT.
My goodness this gets better with every listen.
Dude is unreal. There is hope.
Marcus’s style is so refreshing, such a beast on the guitar and yet so delicate. His voice is amazing and his mastery over both voice and guitar at such a young age blow me away. Imagine what he’ll be producing in the next 5-10 years! You’re the man Marcus thanks for blessing my ears with your beautiful music.
Marcus singing bluesy, soulfull music just works!!
This song needs to be available to download! It is freaking genius. Come on Markus....give it to us!!!!!💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
Hang on tight Marcus, theyre starting to figure it out brother! When we all do, we will all be sitting at the same table taking in what you're cooking on the astronomical scale, i hope you handle it like a champ for the 8 decades it will haunt you. Theres a bronze statue artist out there just waiting for that commission man! You deserve it.
Outstanding. Born for this.
He's so good.
The highlight of 2021 so far is finding Marcus 4 sure
Encore, encore!!!
this young man can play any style of music. this is great
Think that he was playing this guitar in a video at Normans Rare Guitars. Literally, just give him all the guitars. So much soul.
He was playing a Gibson 335 or 345 in that video. Believe he’s playing a D’Angelico here.
Luke Charleston I’m definitely no guitar player or expert. He really makes a guitar sing. I went back and watched the one he was playing at Norman’s and it’s a much darker color tone. Very similar body and sound tone.
Thank you for correcting me.
@@ianz28 All good brother!
You can learn all the technical talent in the world, but you either have heart and soul as a musician or you dont. This kid has got IT.
Love and hard truth!!! 🎉❤
An American treasure!
I'd put this right up there with Farley and Spade's rendition from Tommy Boy
Glad he did this obscure song, which I always loved.
Always wonders what Jimi Hendrix, or maybe Jeff Beck would have sounded like playing it.
Brother you gave me goosebumps
Just when I think we are heading away from this intimate style of music, something like this comes along and makes my day 😍! Such a gift to the music world! That hollow body is something too 🥵.
Soul music has a new face, and you're lookin' at it.
The greatest piece of 'melancholia' ever written.
Really enjoy Marcus’s brand of Blues.
This kid has got it all. Great voice and sh*t hot on guitar. Quality.
MK is the real deal great voice and awesome guitar chops. Please get up to New England I'd love to see a live show
Oh Lord, have mercy! Goosebumples.....
Great version very soulful, i bet Karen is smiling down on you!
This was written by Delaney Bramlett, Bonnie Bramlett, and Leon Russell.
It was titled Groupie! And on the B side of comin home 1969
@socal rocks Most don't know Bonnie was an Ikette for 3 days when she was 17 years old! Yes the only white girl in the band of Ike turner's band with his wife Tina Turner! It was Tina who inspired her to pursue a career in music, so she moved to L.A.
Is that right? Thanks for the information, it figures!
yeah but Karen's voice gave it life!
@@crisprtalk6963 We disagree. I'll take the Bonnie Bramlett version or even the Rita Coolidge version.
I'm so glad to see the younger generation writing and producing good music, then occasionally someone reaches back in the file and covers a great song from my youth. Right on 💪👍
Everything he sings turns into gold
I guess Marcus is like Waylon..... he can sing anything.
Your cover is the best❤❤❤❤
Just Beautiful.
Hits me hard..miss my son
This guy is like Mozart reborn as a soul monster.
Been impressed from scratch. Now? Just WOW!
you've taken Leons song to new heights
