Sciatic Nerve Anatomy Animation : Origin, Course, Branches and Sciatica
The sciatic nerve, with nerve roots from L4 to S3, is a sensorimotor nerve and the thickest in the body. It courses through the infrapiriform foramen, then heads towards the popliteal fossa, covered by the ischiocrural muscles, and gives off muscular branches along its course. This nerve divides into the tibial nerve and common fibular nerves, which supply the leg and foot. Its motor innervation includes the muscles of the posterior compartment of the thigh (hamstrings) and the hamstring portion of the adductor magnus muscle, as well as the muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg through the tibial nerve. In terms of sensory innervation, it does not provide any in the thigh, but in the leg, the tibial nerve and common peroneal nerve take over this function.
