World’s largest container ship OOCL Hong Kong's maiden call at Port of Felixstowe

  • The world’s largest container ship, the 21,413 TEU OOCL Hong Kong, has made its maiden call at Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe.
    The call represented a double celebration it also marked the return of OOCL to the UK’s largest container port after a 17 year absence.
    The 210,890 gross tonne vessel was built at Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. Measuring 400 metres in length and with a width of 58.8 metres, the OOCL Hong Kong serves the Asia-Europe trade lane as part of OOCL’s LL1 service.
    The Ocean Alliance consists of OOCL, CMA CGM, Cosco Shipping and Evergreen Line.

      I dont think ships for containers can get much larger than this because apparently this ship is actually too large to fit into most ports. Any bigger would just be too big.

      @@TooMuchMoon Comment was half a year ago, numbers probably changed a bit. As of now, the largest container ship by the total ammount of standard sized containers it can hold is the HMM Algeciras; It is 400 feet long and can hold nearly 24000 containers.

    Such engineering marvels are made and operated by Engineers ....
    Captains do not operate such high end technological ships equipped with the most modern large engines and machinery.

      Any ship designed be 399.9m long is designed for Suez canal, you see the Suez canal authority will have to give special permission for any ship 400m or longer to pass, anything shorter can pass as normal. Take a guess how long all the largest container ships are.

    So... a couple of questions for those with more information. 1) Why is the ship 399.87m? Did someone measure wrong? Is the ship able to come right along side the dock? The last few seconds of the video seemed to show it unloading from 10-20 yds away.

      @@justicewarrior9187 well ports have sea walls to protect it from waves which tightens angle ships can enter so a 1km ship would be very hard to turn into it without crashing or blocking the whole/most of port entrance

    Wow, beautiful! I live and breath logistic. I hope that there is a smart discharge process when the vessels arrives at the POD or transshipment (would like to see that part in more detail) That can easily become the worst nightmare.

      That's why the whole discharge/load process is computer-controlled; the onshore handling is likewise complex. As to ship-loading there are aspects you probably don't know about.

      When a ship arrives into a port for the first time there can be a tug with fire hoses running as a ‘welcome’ to the port. If you look at most large or well known ships (QM2 etc) on their first ports of call you will see the same. It’s an old tradition. Cheers
