This episode shows how dramatic elementary schools get with their rules and punishments
Yah. We'd getting trouble just for saying either "what the" or "what the heck".
I agree. Glad I was born in 1992 and not in 2008.
Imagine high school would be like
can we talk about how bad ass that slangologist is? Also how cool their teacher is for calling her old professor to help her kids. The way he switched from using all the slang to taking his glasses off and going directly into fine English? dude was awesome

I’m 36 and this is some of the most sophisticated writing and psychology anywhere. Recess is unmatched, and the episodes are only 10 min long which is perfect for busy adults. It’s truly remarkable.

lol its even funnier when you think about the fact that this episode probably sums up why they always say "Whomps", u figure the writers didn't want the kids saying "this sucks" so they made up "Womps" to avoid getting in trouble with parents.
I figured the whole “dirty mind” comment was the writers basically telling people irl if they think whomps is a replacement for an actual swear that’s on them
There are actually some cartoons that use the word sucks, like Fantastic Four 94 and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Not sure but it may also have been used in Generator Rex, but they definitely used the word "freakin'."
Yet the head master is called prickly 😂
“Mr. White” was Harvey Keitel’s code name in Reservoir Dogs and in Pulp Fiction he played “The Cleaner”. Love the subtle Tarantino reference in this episode 👏🙏

This episode is about Freedom of Speech.
This episode is about schools all over america getting way too triggered over words they dont even understand, and deeming anything outside the norm to be "filthy".
Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences.
Not necessarily. Otherwise, being sent to the Gulag for critiquing el presidente wouldn't be a violation of your free speech.
Obviously some consequences are reasonable, but not necessarily all.
You shouldn't be persecuted beyond what is reasonable. Other people critiquing you for your bad language, and choosing not to associate with you? That's fine. Being kicked off a supposedly open platform? Not fine, I'd say.
@@HauntFreak13 Yeah natural consequences. A government body cracking down on you is not a consequence from using the word. At a school its usually what a teacher says goes. But if my mom was called up to the school because I got in trouble for using a made up word half the staff would be fired.

That was the moral of this episode, that rules and authority figures can be really ridiculous and corrupt.
So Mrs. Finster has a dirty mind apparently, since she was the one who initially found the word "whomps" to be bad.

It's pretty ridiculous the lengths Mrs. Finster and the principal go to see TJ get labeled as some sort of criminal over minor things.

“ if anybody finds dirty meaning in this word(whomps, they probably have a dirty mind to start with”😂😂😂😂😂😂
An interesting take on language as descriptive vs prescriptive. In other words, the meaning of words is based more on how people use it and not what others inject in its intended meaning. Confusion arises mostly out of disagreement in intended meaning vs interpreted meaning. Some words are hard to be confused about in the meaning like physical objects, but abstract concepts are much easier to disagree about. This is why when people write papers, they have to clearly define the terms they use to avoid misunderstanding of intended remarks as much as possible.
Someone jokingly said “This Whomps” in my high school class and my teacher, who clearly had never heard the word before, chastised him for saying it. We had a good laugh at the irony, but yes, language changes and evolves based on usage and intent.
Reccess is like the best kids show u never know wat they will do next TJ and the gang
Perfect example of how we give too much power to “bad words.” They’re WORDS. Whether or not you get offended by it is your own fault.
No shit they're just words. It's the intention behind the words that cause offense. If someone calls me a slur damn right I'm going to be pissed.
The judge then went home, and whomped his wife.

ReptarOnIce Or Possibly one of the kids wrote it
As a kid I died of laughter every time Principal Prickly said “WHO THE HECK IS WHOMPY WHOMPERSON?!” About 10 years after I first saw this episode, I laugh even harder. God it’s funny 😂
This Recess episode WHOMPS !!!! 😂😂😂😂
they get a 40 min recess, how did a story about whomps take 40 min?
One of my favourite episodes as a child. As an adult, I realise that is a lesson in linguistics, etymology, and the arbitrary nature of school discipline.
How silly is this? Arresting a kid for saying a slang word which is not profanity. Lol
Considering it's youtube, I can't believe this hasn't been said yet: Two people whomp
This was a whomping good episode
Why the BOE go harder than SWAT
booger head? a cuss word? Man I miss those days. The days of childhood: recess, your biggest problems: surviving the extremely easy homework the teachers gave you, who stole your crayons/colour pencils, and what lunch was for (not including about worrying weather or not it'll make you throw up, make you sick, or just plain trying to figure out weather or no it's alive and safe to eat. (trust me, we're still trying to figure out the last one as the years go by)) finger painting, and naps. miss it
Watching cartoons from your childhood as an adult lets you see all kinds of cultural references. Mr. White is Harvey Kietel lol
TJ's right. Making up words is part of being a kid is about. I mean me and my brother and sisters and our friends made up words as kids, so did our parents and grandparents. I mean hell people today is making up words. People like Mr White get triggered and get their panties up in a bunch over the dumbest things.
whomp whomp whomp, hey yeah yeah
The Wild Fish are the greatest team of all time
They Whomp!!
The Board Of Education is messed up here. If no kid knew "Whomps" was a banned word, then you shouldn't be allowed to punish them for saying it. Second, the Board of Education basically tricked TJ into thinking he could say it without trouble just so they could expel him for it.
The slangologist kills me everytime. Anytime he talks I crack up
I have been binging through these episodes brings back good memories I need to find the entire Sabrina the teenage witch episodes it sucks we grow up.
Kenny Omega wasn't the original cleaner it was Mr. White.
Brett Patterson Fucking Awesome
Man, these kids were in "court" a lot
The court room fight lol.
I remember this episode 😂😂😂
The BOE has access to military grade helicopters and a SWAT team.
This is why teachers are underpaid. They allocate money for stupid things like that instead.
I understand that some schools were bad. However when a school district need a green helicopter and a SWAT team for an Elementary School, that tells you something
4:36 They're sending a lab teacher from New Mexico?

Technically speaking, all words were made up at some point.
Kelly Seastar exactly
Did it have to end with Spinelli rubbing it in for TJ after he's acquitted? ''Sort of a hollow victory, huh Teej?.''.
It's not replacing any specific bad word. It's another way of saying something is unpleasant, repulsive or displeasing...that's what this whole episode was about. Weren't you paying attention?
Mr White's a reference to Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction
Honestly, this is a great show. It teaches stuff like the world wars/ treaty of Versailles, to the cold war and the red menace of communism infiltrating the west. But they do it in subtlety where it is not enough where it is hard to understand, but not too much where it is blatantly obvious.
This comment deserves a heart react ❤
wow this show is WHOMPING GOOD
I don't believe in bad words. Humans invent words and then humans can believe that a word is bad. If the reason is because words someones feelings. There are thousands or millions of ways to verbally hurt someones feelings.
you can say "you are utterly grotesque with a ridiculous facial complexion and horrid intelligence" which hurts someones feelings without the use of curse words
or you can say "you are fucking awesome" and please someone
and the curse words back then weren't the same as today
If anything, the same thing happens with each generation. If some new word that the new generation has that the old one doesn't like, they immediately write it off as something bad.
You are not human
who here still says the word “whomps” 😂
This show is WAY ahead of its time
Principal Prickly: I have no choice but to give you detention level 5.
Me: Man, this whomps
Principal Prickly: Make that level 6! Are you ready to push me any further?
Me: Why yes, why don't you go boff yourself?
Principal Prickly: ..... Ok, ..... level 10!
Not even close bud
Lmao TJ'S Dad totally looks like a cartoon version of George Costanza.
For some reasons, Mr.White reminds me of Wolf from Pulp Fiction
Mr white is a character from Quentin Tarantinos "Resevoir Dogs" played by harvey keitel who also played the wolf in pulp fiction
8:27 the switch up from the slang to actual english is brilliant.
It was even better in the Norwegian dub. His voice actor (who also voiced Mr. White funnily enough) spoke with a slightly deep and husky voice whenever he spoke slang, and then his voice became very high-pitched and melodic when he spoke normally
@@MorganKing95 LMAO that's awesome. Not only for the description but knowing it got translated into other languages and they kept the change. I didn't realize it was viewed by other countries
@animelvr99
Yup, the series has had worldwide appeal. I was only 2 years old when the series debuted, but I finally got to watch it when I was in 4th grade, fittingly enough, and it quickly became one of my favorites
Since we're on the topic of Recess and translations, the Norwegian dub for "Yope from Norway" had the titular character being given a different dialect than the "standard Norwegian" everyone else spoke, whereas the Swedish dub managed to bring an actual Norwegian actor to speak Swedish with a Norwegian accent
@@MorganKing95 this is so wild. the depth to this is so culturally cool. thanks for sharing. any Norwegian kids show you think or non American shows you think I should watch?
and respectfully since I'm assuming you are bilingual: did you learn English from the show or school?
@animelvr99
I don't know so much about any shows, and I don’t think they have an English dub anyway
We Norwegians learn English in school since 3rd grade or something, and we're heavily exposed to English due to things like video games, academic texts, CZcams videos, movies and TV-shows, and either travels abroad or visits from tourists. It also helps to know English in many professions sine Norway is often dependent on cooperation with other countries
