  • Professional wrestling out of San Francisco around 1978.
    I edited two old uploads from Joe W. There was sound from only one side and I fixed that. I synced the audio as best I could cleaned up the rough edges for a smoother video.
    Great older footage of wrestling. Thanks, Joe W., for the uploads

      I really miss Big Time Wrestling. I'm from the Pacific Northwest. For us in Washington State, it was on Channel 13. Thankfully, that was one of our TV's best channels, in terms of reception. Those were the days. Rocky Johnson and Roddy Piper were my favorite wrestlers, at the time. I was a huge fan of the Destroyer, too. No one knew what he looked like under his mask. Those were the days. Being a kid in the seventies was awesome. Watching this sure brings back memories. 🙂

    My dad was good friends with Big Time’s owner Roy Shire’s son when I was a kid in the 90’s. I spent many nights at the Toe Hold Ranch in Sebastopol looking through old Wrestling memorabilia. I didn’t realIy know how important some of the stuff I was looking at actually was at the time. I remember looking at this wrestling ring, I think the exact one they’re using in this video and them telling me Andre the Giant had wrestled on it and just being so stoked about it. It was a very memorable time in my childhood

    I grew up watching wrestling on KBHK. Furthermore, I was playing the bagpipes then, too. I still do. PLUS, the kilt tartan I wore in those days was the same as what Piper is wearing here. Clan McCleod (pronounced McCloud) of Lewis. What is affectionately known as "Loud McCleod'' because of the bright yellow. Others call it the 'bumblebee tartan'' because if the yellow with black stripes.

    Really good Video Sir. I'm Santa Rosa born and bred. I Grew up with Pro Wrestling. I've seen many matches at the Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. They then moved the matches to the Veterans Memorial Building across the street. Mr. Shire had a Ranch in Sebastopol, called the Toe Hold Ranch. Several of the big name Wrestlers under his promotion would hang out there. Including Andre the Giant who did a brief tour with Mr. Shire in 1976 or1977. Mr. Shire brought Andre to Analy High School for a visit. They ended up at a local Ice Cream shop. This brings back many fond memories. My Dad who's 91 now remembers going to the matches in the very beginning of Mr. Shires promotion.

      Guy Lambert! Genuine athlete from So City High School. When i was a kid, we attended every show at the Cow Palace. He worked as The Masked Avenger out in the NWA territories. Believe it or not, he was a mortician at Chapel of the Highlands in San Bruno! When we buried my grandmother (a huge wrestling fan) in 1976, I was riding up front in the limo, and into the driver's seat sits this huge man. My cousin was poking me in the ribs and whispering "Hey, that is Guy Lambert!" I asked the driver if he was, and he said, trying to keep kayfabe, "Yes, my name is John." What a great guy. I went back there and did a school report on wrestling, and there is a pic in the San Bruno Herald of him giving me a body slam. (He didn't land it, though, i was only 12.) Little did we both know that I would go on to a 20 year career in Big Time Wrestling under Kirk White (RIP)...

    I vaguely remember a wrestler named Mephisto from back in the mid-70's, on Shire's Big Time Wrestling. I seem to recall someone with a "loaded boot" put the boot to Mephisto's head, and ended his career. Can any of the old fans confirm that story? I was a very young kid in that period (about 7 years old).

    • @nealbfinn
      @nealbfinn Před 9 měsíci +1

      "The Great Memphisto" was a wrestler named Frankie Caine. He wrestled in the SF Bay Area territory in the early 70's and probably beyond that under different identities. Promoter Roy Shire used to occasionally bring in "guests" from other territories for one big match. Among his favorites was "The Sheik" based out of Detroit. Since he couldn't get the original "Sheik", he created his own. Caine would come to the ring with his wife dressed in a harem costume as his "slave girl", throw down a "prayer rug" and delay the match while he did his "prayers". His "gimmick" was a loaded boot. At the climax of the match he would tap the boot which positioned some sort of foreign object into the toe. One kick would knock his opponent cold. The "slave girl" bit was dropped after a short time. Caine had a bitter feud with Pat Patterson after he knocked Pat out with the boot. Couple of weeks later, Patterson got his revenge, attacking Memphisto and removing the boot on TV for all to see. And in their house show, Patterson wore the boot and knocked Caine out. But I don't think it ended his career. He was still living well past 2000.

      @donaldwycoff4154 Před 9 měsíci

      Glad to hear I'm not the only person who remembers Mephisto. I didn't realize it was 1970, and his real name was Caine. I was five in 1970, so I'm not surprised I don't recall many details, or that the internet doesn't have a lot of detail about him (that I found). Maybe Mephisto died on Shire's promotion. He certainly wasn't there in the late 70's when Pat Patterson and Rocky Johnson were at the top. Thanks for sharing! @@nealbfinn

      Yes, it was the lowest ring that I ever saw. Incredibly Strange Wrestling bought one of them and used it until they folded in the mid 2000s.

    Yes, this is a nit pick.
    Bugs me so much when someone, more so professionals that are presenters, like Renner, says that a plane going South, is going "up." "Does a lot of wrestling up in Los Angeles." I don't think that Shires was running T.V. south of L.A. Especially after he got spanked attempting a couple of shows at the Sports Arena.
    Never was a fan of Hank Renner. He was so blase' dry. Before the Sacramento based show was Roy Shires the show bicycled throughout the territory, the S.F. Bay Area had "National All Star Wrestling" performed at KTVU in Oakland. Walt Harris was 10x the announcer that Renner was. Like the very best like Solie, Dick Lane, Jim Ross and Lance Russell, Harris, producer of the Giants radio and T.V. broadcasts, brought a serious tone. He interviewed the talent as athletes not actors. Renner lowered the quality of the show, already hurt by the crap production values.

      Louden Kliehr, great post. When BTW closed down in 1981 do you think Hank Renner had something to do with the closure along with the low ratings at that time? Also do you think Shires should have picked "Allan Bolte" over Renner for the Channel 40/44/36 TV shows? I say this because Bolte was doing the Cow Palace live shows and he was very good in my opinion. That Walt Harris was a "high-end" announcer I have to admit. Walt just loved the Roller Derby business. Much more than working for Shires and the Pro Wrestling industry.

    Buddy Rose was a better wrestler than Piper. Piper was a better talker and entertainer.
