Sometimes I see how these great directors watched so many old movies growing up, stuff I've never heard of, and I feel sort of bad that I haven't. But I realize that I grew up on THEIR movies and others in the modern Era. And it's a great thing to have movies like his to inspire me.

Eric Renquist ...The thing is all of those movies are available through streaming channels. Most of those French new wave movies from the 50s and 60s are on the criterion channel. Plus many other foreign classics.

@@firewithfire848 I think eric meant since those director's have seen those older film's and been inspired by them a part of those film's lives within their ones and so in essence he has seen them just maybe not directly.

Inherent Vice is the only movie that went from "I'm about to walk out of this piece of shit" to "let's give it another go" to "maybe theres something more here. Let me watch it again" to "this is one of the greatest films ever made". Top 10.

Had a near-exact response. Borrowed the Bluray and got tired 15 mins in. Returned it and never cared for it. Years later, after having seen almost all his other films, I went back and watched it and loved it!

It was a frustrating first watch for me too! But upon subsequent viewings it made a lot more sense, I love it! My only regret is not buying the blu-ray which seems to be out of print now.

I'm halfway through a film directing course and even tho it's just basics, it is tiring... And heartbreaking, truly, because I see my homework shortfilms that they leave us every week, and all I see is awful filmmaking.
I only have a phone for recording, a potato laptop for editing, and family when on their spare time. I don't know how I can make something worthwhile with what I have.
But I don't want to loose hope, becayse this is the only thing I truly want to do.

Drop out of the course and save your money. Work a regular part time/full-time job waiting table or something menial to raise money for your short films. Go to film festivals and watch the content there and network with other filmmakers. Join Facebook groups and meet likeminded people. Try and get a job as a runner no matter what the pay/ duration is. Being in and around that environment will rub off on you so well

Even if you don't think you can make something great with your current equipment, it's the perfect time to hone your craft. Pretty soon people will say "holy shit, you made that with your phone, a potato, and your family as a crew??" Limitations can breed greatness, if paired with the right ambition.

To make art u need to be alone ..so being in movies set with all this crew makes it so hard and the artist will just finish the work by the quickest way..even if all the crew are artists ..each of them is artist alone..maybe that's why no filmmaker had win Noble and even songwriters won it.
