I was in top set english and I can confirm the more outlandish your inference was the happier the teacher was with you even tho everyone in the room knew THAT THE TREE WAS JUST A FUCKING TREE
This always annoyed me, the way people dismiss inference you can take from things. Sure, most of them are gonna miss, but if you have a wicked plot you want to write, are you seriously, as the writer, not gonna use foreshadowing and symbolism? Even things like the name of the characters can go from 'my vision had two guys, Lenny and George, and for the others I chose them based on context of 1930 America." to "I chose this name because its latin origins link back to this other character, who are eventually bound to cross paths" for example. As far as stories goes, it's about the image the author puts into your imagination. The point of "finding inference" is to be able to derive meaning from between the lines and justify it. Like how we never get the name if Curley's Wife being symbolic of the nature of women during the 1930s. The "just a tree" might just be a tree, but it might also represent something relevant to the story (growth, death, nature). Ofc it doesn't always apply, but you can't dismiss it.
