  • A complete guide to the Moon? In this video, Robert reviews all three volumes of LUNA COGNITA: A Comprehensive Observer's Guide to the Known Moon - by Robert A. Garfinkle.
This extraordinary book set should appeal to anyone participating in the ongoing cultural relationship with our closest celestial neighbour. A relationship that's as old and mysterious as our species. And unless you've never heard of the Moon, that probably includes you.
This book is the ultimate guide to our Moon, not Nasa's or the Chinese Space agencies Moon, but the Moon humans have seen and sung about forever. The Moon you can probably see tonight and explore with a telescope.
Please note: the Cambridge Photographic Lunar Atlas seems to be out of print or in short supply in some regions, however, we have added the links as electronic versions are available.

I wonder why the BBC hasn't yet invited Robert to work for them.
So far, a very valuable missed opportunity in my opinion.

Agreed. Robert and Dr Becky Smethurst are the two of the most gifted communicators on the subject of astronomy we have in the UK.

I like these type of books. Attempts to cover very wide subjects comprehensively. Like a modern version of the tomes that would have been found in monastery libraries in the 12th century.

Excellent review of this set. I am so incredibly excited - I've been away from astronomy for a couple of years, and have a 5" Mak on the way that'll be primarily used for lunar observing with my two boys. Just ordered a set of the hardcover books. What an incredible resource they are going to be!

Hi Robin - I can't fight you on the size. Reading one volume in bed before making the vid, I must have dozed off, and the book slipped out of my hands and hit the floor with a bang like a .303 rifle shot. I thought it was the last trump. I was wide awake for the next hour. KR RJD A&NTV
