How did we recreate Philippe Halsman's 'Dali Atomicus'. Here's my step by step watch through of this complex 7 light set-up. Hope you enjoy! Karl Taylor
Why would anyone give this incredible endeavour a thumbs down? The amount of time that went into planning and executing this recreation must have been considerable. A really great video.
i know how lazy and attention seeking, he was inspired by an old photo which ultimately lead him to pursue a career in specialised areas of photography (creating lots of new/creative images) and wanted to pay tribute to that by recreating it with such detail as you can see if you even bothered to watch them, because personally after i watched it laziness was the last word that came in to my head and i dont think you really have much of an argument with the cat thing unless you are that ignorant you believe 'they have done it before, so they should do it again' with all the animal cruelty in the past with dancing bears, smoking monkeys etc you think should still continue, you are either so uneducated or sick enough to think animals deserve to be tortured, if he had used cats how well do you think the video would have been perceived, do you think people would have said 'wow great historical accuracy' or more like 'omg he actually used cats the evil b*stard'
why does always everything have to be reproduced? Just to have it in video? Its only a matter of recources to reproduce such a thing. The value of an artwork sits in its idea - after the idea is set, may people could copy or reproduce this idea. Thats not a big ting. Maybe a reason for a thumb down!
thanks for your sharing. the way you solve the reflection issue made me think what I couldve done last week when photographing a reflective bottle with reflective printed logo. Wish I watched this video earlier.
Wow . What a wonderful image to replicate and such a beautiful result . This is One of best photographic videos I’ve watched on you tube . So enjoyable to watch and just shows your passion and photography skills so well .
Looks like a really fun and interesting project. But wouldve liked an explanation on how he accomplished this with just 1 or 2 lights in the original image. Still wish i were there - looks amazing, Frank
Wow, stunning. So how many shots did you have to take before you got the jump and the water in sync? I don't know what would be more tiring if there were lots of shots, throwing the water or jumping up and down.
Hi Peter, we cover basic composition in our essentials section and we have a very important chapter on vision and the invoking of emotion in images I think in chapter 64 of 'Lightsource' in the portrait section. In 'Fashionscape' I talk through my reasons for composing a shot a certain way and the thought process behind it and this also something I've brought in on several of our live shows. I guess vision is personal and can be a difficult key to unlock I obviously demonstrate on many of our product tutorials about pre-visualisation. On two new landscape courses that are coming soon I also explain what I'm looking for and show how I go about finding it.
We thought about that but then decided stuffed cats would have looked just silly. We couldn't throw cats because I don't believe throwing 2 or 3 cats twenty nine times would have been fair. It also wouldn't have been allowed on TV, but we said all that in Video Part1.
Stuffed cats? That would have looked ridiculous. Also, have you ever thrown a stuffed toy through the air before? They don't travel through the air like a living cat would. It would probably end up sideways, backwards or upside down, and would have looked just awful.

Karl and Team, I LOVE it. Great work guys, would love to know the full amount of time it took.
you Sir have an amazing talent
Very kind thank you.
Sort of reminds me of the darkroom magic of Jerry Ulesman (spelling) Outstanding video Karl.
My head hurt from all the detail you had to follow! I'll bet there was a libation or "two" consumed after this set was completed! :0)
awesome
Amazing
Thank you Esteban😀
awesome work Karl! Recreating something like this is a lot harder than you made it look
Wow, stunning. So how many shots did you have to take before you got the jump and the water in sync? I don't know what would be more tiring if there were lots of shots, throwing the water or jumping up and down.
FANTASTIC!
No cats?
Oh Karl, my god! You are super each time more! Do you have a job vacancy in your studio? :D
Hi Karl, most of your education is technical and technique based, anything planned on composition and vision?

I figured if cats were involved, it would be more complex to shot. It might take up to N^3 more complex, lol
Without the cats, this project is like recreating Apollo mission without the 'eco-unfriendly' rocket fuel... pointless o_O
Fair effort, but i much prefer the light of the original. Yeah, making light is not the same a making bright!
amazing reproduction
I miss the cats. They made the image.
what was wrong with stuffed cats or cat replica's? I feel like you copped out in the name of political correctness, is this true?
We thought about that but then decided stuffed cats would have looked just silly. We couldn't throw cats because I don't believe throwing 2 or 3 cats twenty nine times would have been fair. It also wouldn't have been allowed on TV, but we said all that in Video Part1.

it's a pity, you don't have cats, LOL
Fair effort, but i much prefer the light of the original.
I prefer the original because it has Dali and the cats and of course it is the original.
Why no cats? They can be thrown and will be ok.
BBC don't allow that and we like cats.
So why it was ok back then and you adore original photo, do you think people were neandertals before? they knew cats could have some level of pain.
This is not amazing! You can totally see the actor concentrating on jumping at the right time with the water - how amazing
